Audioengine HD6 Overview

Designed to connect to virtually any device, the satin black Audioengine HD6 Bluetooth Speaker System provides an analog stereo RCA input, an optical audio input, and 1/8" input; Bluetooth connectivity with aptX HD allows for wireless connectivity with your compatible devices. The speakers consist of a 5.5" woofer and a 1" tweeter and output up to 50W per channel RMS, or 75W per channel peak. For your convenience, all connectivity is via the powered left speaker, which connects to the passive right speaker with the included speaker wire. In addition to the included speaker wire, an 1/8" audio cable, RCA audio cable, magnetic removable grilles, and IR remote are also included.

Efficient Integrated Design
The speaker cabinets, drivers, bass port designs, amplifiers, and passive crossovers are all tuned together for the HD6. This, in turn, helps make for a more efficient system that requires less power than passive speakers and a separate integrated amplifier or similar A/V components. Audioengine builds all this into the left speaker cabinet to make it easy to connect your smartphone, tablet, computer, display, network player, or any other audio product.
Built-In B1 and D1
Audioengine has taken features from the B1 aptX HD Bluetooth Receiver and the D1 24-bit DAC, and combined some of this circuitry inside the HD6.
Engineered for High-Quality Bluetooth Audio
The Bluetooth built into the HD6 powered speakers features aptX HD coding, which is a Bluetooth audio codec designed to help provide enhanced sound quality. And even if your phone or tablet doesn't have aptX HD, the HD6 Bluetooth solution is backwards-compatible with SBC and AAC codecs, so you can wirelessly stream music from any Bluetooth-enabled device and still enjoy all your music.
Extended Bluetooth Range
The HD6 offers a Bluetooth solution that has up to a 100' range for multi-room use, with virtually no degradation in audio quality.
24-bit DAC
The HD6 Bluetooth receiver and optical input both utilize the AKM AK4396A DAC, which is designed to provide low noise and high fidelity. The optical input configures the DAC as a bit-perfect 24-bit DAC, which will process sample rates up to 192 kHz natively. For Bluetooth, the AK4396A is used as an upsampling DAC and will pad all bit depths to 24-bits, achieving a higher signal-to-noise ratio and lower noise floor. Due to the high signal-to-noise specs of the AK4396A, the fact that digital signal is upsampled to 24-bits, and the added benefit of onboard triple redundancy power source conversion and filtering, the HD6 Bluetooth implementation is engineered to present impressive low noise and low distortion characteristics.
Analog Amplifier Design
The amplifiers in the HD6 are located in the left speaker and feature class A/B analog monoblock design. This is designed to provide high-quality audio and greater flexibility, and all the circuit boards for the power and preamp sections are vertically mounted for augmented mechanical shock protection.
Driver Designs
Audioengine uses ferrofluid-cooled silk dome tweeters with neodymium magnets. Silk tweeters are engineered to hold up well under high power, and the edge-driven design helps provide a smooth response. The woofers are Kevlar woven glass aramid composite with rubber surrounds. The strength of Kevlar means the woofer retains its shape when being driven at high levels. The HD6 woofers are housed in cast aluminum frames, which help provide high rigidity and increased heat dispersion.
Power Transformers
Audioengine uses gapless-core toroidal transformers, which have a tighter radiated magnetic field, translating to lower noise. They are lighter than standard "EI" transformers, and also generate less heat.
Detachable Grilles
The HD6 includes detachable grilles that are held in place with hidden neodymium magnets for a clean look.
Additional Features
  • Dual audio inputs and full-range variable output
  • Optical, RCA, and 1/8" inputs allow for easy connection to a variety of sources, including a turntable or TV

Audioengine HD6 Reviews

Audioengine HD6 with Stands

By Jason
Rated 5 out of 5
Date: 2025-09-01

The Audioengine HD6 with stands are absolutely fantastic. Build quality is top-notch—solid, heavy, and finished like high-end furniture. The stands make them feel cleanly integrated on my desktop and put the speakers at the perfect height for listening. The sound is incredible: rich, detailed, and spacious with just the right balance of bass, mids, and highs. They handle every genre effortlessly and easily fill a room without losing clarity. Connectivity is super convenient, with multiple inputs plus Bluetooth. And the Bluetooth quality blew me away—it’s almost indistinguishable from wired playback, which makes me use them all the time. I was concerned they would be too large for my setup but I find them absolutely perfect. I initially tried the HD4s but wanted more base and range. If you want speakers that look amazing, sound even better, and are easy to live with, the HD6 is worth every penny. Highly recommend!

These speakers sound good coming out of the box, but add the Audioengine B1 Bluetooth audio adapter & they will sound great. Love 'em.

I have a set of well-regarded but aging Klipsch Promedia 2.1 speakers/powered subwoofer . Has anyone compared the HD6 to them?
Asked by: Helene
The Audioengine HD6 Bluetooth Speaker System (Satin Black, Pair), BH # AUHD6BLK, is amazing and would compare well to the Klipsch Promedia 2.1. The HD6 would offer better midrange and highs and overall performs better for music listening. The low end bass response is respectable and is very tight but not as deep as the Klipsch's separate subwoofer. The HD6 will perform very well as computer speakers for music and movies and for most other applications. It can connect to a wide variety of devices owing to its array of inputs.

question

I was wondering how you switch sources on these speakers. Or as suggested in the reviews, can you really leave multiple sources plugged in and the speakers just automatically play whatever they're receiving a signal from?
Asked by: Eric R.
No switches necessary. Whatever connected device is playing will be played by the speakers.

question

How do this compare to 2 JBL xtreme paired together?
Asked by: Mine
The Audioengine HD6 pair will blow away the JBL pair! The JBL Extreme's particular charms are that it is a portable bluetooth system, splash-proof, rugged and battery operated. Oh, and a pair of them would sound great but I recommend them on their own merits and not as a competitor for your affections withe the HD6.

How do these compare to the A5+ model?
Asked by: Zach
Compared to the Audioengine A5+ the HD6 Bluetooth Speaker System are larger speakers with a bigger woofers and tweeters. These are similar speakers with the main differences been size, and power the HD6 has RMS 100W vs A5+ RMS 50W. When choosing one over the other it is important to consider the space the speakers need to fill.
