It's more of a specialized need but not necessary, we bought it to solve a rare problem but I don't know if we'll use it again. It worked great. Save your money unless you can't find a recording solution.
This cable extension for the zoom mic capsules is handy when you want to place the mic capsule in a different location so you can keep your actual field recorder close to you for settings changes.
