MXL MXL 870 overview

  • 1Description

Designed for recording vocals and instruments in a studio setting, the 870 is a large-diaphragm condenser microphone from MXL. Its capsule features an on-board FET preamp with a balanced out. The microphone picks up sound in a cardioid polar pattern, rendering this unit suitable for situations in which minimizing sound directly behind the mic is a must.

Also, it includes a high-isolation shockmount to mitigate any noise coming from the floor, such as foot stamps and leaning sounds. A microfiber cloth is provided to clean the unit. Note that the microphone requires 48V phantom power, available in most preamps and recorders.

    MXL MXL 870 reviews

870 Studio Condenser Microphone is rated 4.1 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great large diaphragm condenser microphone! It sound relatively flat on instruments but on vocals it tends to sound a little brighter than usual. The brighter sound quality is great for voice-over and podcasts as it makes vocals sound more clear. On singing vocals, it tends to sound more sibilant than what I prefer due to its brighter sound but with a basic EQ, that can be fixed easily. I do prefer the sound of this microphone than other mics similar of its price due to its brighter sound. The noise floor of this microphone is very low and it shouldn't be a problem when recording vocals. Overall, this is a great microphone for many vocal application and I would definitely recommend it for its price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great sounding mic This mic wasnt one that I was looking at getting, but B&H had a great sale price going on and I decided to take a chance. I wasn't disappointed. This is a great mic, it's constructed well and sounds great. I use this for podcasting and the nice rich vocal tone it gives sounds professional and clean. It seems like it would be good in other recording scenarios as well, like recording instruments (I havent used it for this so I'm only speculating). All in all I'm very happy with this microphone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice Mic to have especially for female vocals!!!!! Very nice and clear crisp sound but I find it appealing for a female vocalist. It brings out nice clear sound even on the highs of female vocals

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice quality mike I'm not a professional singer, so please understand this is just my own opinion. I was using cheap $30 condenser mike that has really good reviews on theother websites (Floxxxxx BM-800). In comparison, the MXL870 sound much flat and localized, although they both seem to have asimilar cardioid pattern. I think it's better for recording podcast or interviews, rather than vocal/singing. Comes with shock mount and extra rubber band for the shock mount. No wind blocking form included like other one. Nice built quality.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Deal I actually got this mic when it was in the Deal Zone, so I got this guy for $70... KILLER value (still would've payed normal price for it after using it). I've used it for vocals and acoustic guitar, and have just been impressed with the clarity and quality of those recordings. Very versatile, perfect for home studio situations (as is my case), highly recommended.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Arrived not working. I just set up my new MXL 870 for the first time. it is not working. Since I am in the Caribbean, it will be a big headache having it returned. So sad.
