Keep your old hardware alive!
I have a 15 year old laser printer that is still going strong—but ethernet only. Previously it was connected via a wifi extender reconfigured to be an Ethernet/wifi bridge. Not the best solution—I had to disable its own wifi network, disable the DHCP server, all sorts of work. This is much simpler. Here's how I configured it: 1. Write down the MAC address (it's written on device itself) 2. Log into your router and provision a static IP for the adapter's MAC address. Pick something easy like 192.168.1.10 and add a comment so you know what it is. 3. Connect the adapter to your computer via Ethernet and power it via USB 4. Disable your computer's wifi 5. Set Ethernet interface on computer to the static IP, netmask, and gateway according to the instructions 6. Log into the adapter's configuration page (also in the instructions) by typing the IP address into your browser 7. Change the default password 8. Log back in again 9. Set the IP of the adapter to match the static IP that you picked 10. Connect to your wifi network 11. Reboot and log in to the adapter from your laptop 12. YOU SHOULD NOW BE CONNECTED TO YOUR WIFI NETWORK USING THE ADAPTER. CHECK TO MAKE SURE YOU CAN PING DEVICES ON YOUR NETWORK / ACCESS THE INTERNET 13. Disconnect your computer, turn your wifi back on, and confirm you can access the adapter from wifi. Congratulations! Your adapter is now ready to use. Connect your device. You will be able to access the device and the adapter via their respective web interfaces on your network. Both have static IP addresses so they never get lost. Pro tip: The MAC address on the side of the adapter is for both the WIFI AND ETHERNET interfaces of the bridge. Strange but true! Last thing: This is an old-school b/g/n wifi adapter on the congested 2.4 GHz band. Don't use it for anything that needs bandwidth. Keep it to embedded things and you will be happy.
Pretty impressive tiny bridge
Smallest solution I've found to make a wired device wifi compatible. The instructions are good and accurate, just read them slowly and don't skip ahead as it uses non-standard terminology and has to reboot for every change (30 seconds/time). I use windows, cannot speak to the mac issues but it configured perfectly on the first go. It CAN do static IP's and they are NOT limited to some arbitrary address. I tried a few in the 192, 10, and 2 ranges - all worked fine. It may have been the case in 2019 (when that review was written) but it is no longer limited in this regard. TBD if the heat issue will shorten its lifespan - I assume it will. Don't forget that the apple Airport Express only lasted about 1yr before dying and they were much pricier than this.
