FiiO K1 Overview

  • 1Description

The thumb-sized K1 from FiiO is a portable headphone amplifier and DAC with mastering quality sound that supports resolutions of up to 24-bit/ 96 kHz. The unit offers true plug-and-play operation with no batteries to charge and no drivers required for operation. The K1's audio architecture utilizes Savitechs's SA9023A USB receiver to decode USB audio, while the high fidelity, low noise TI PCM5102 DAC chip outputs to the TPA 61332A headphone amplifier, which is capable of driving most headphones with a range of 16 to 100 ohms. The K1 also self-mutes when powering on or off, reducing harmful transients. The all-metal chassis is sandblasted for optimal sheen, texture, durability of appearance, and hand grip. The K1 ships with a removable clip and a USB connection cable.

    FiiO K1 Reviews

K1 Portable Headphone Amplifier and USB DAC is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 11.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from It Does Little if Any I purchased a Fiio K1 DAC based on a recommendation by Steve Guttenberg on CNet. When I first used it, I felt that it made music with more body. Without the DAC, music from my computer: MacBook Pro for work and Dell for home, was quite thin. After one month usage, I, however, can't tell much difference with or without it. I use it with a Monoprice Premium Hi-Fi DJ Style Over-the-Ear Pro Headphone and an almost 20 times more expensive headphone, Hifiman HE400S, as well as a compact compact stereo system. The both headphones are highly recommended by Steve Guttenberg for their sound quality. I mostly listen classic music.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible Hard to believe such a small device can have such a dramatic effect! I use this at my computer to listen to my iTunes, with Sony MDR-7506 phones. Incredible sound. I cannot tell the difference between this and my other DAC's; I suppose lab equipment could. Only caveat is that it (apparently) changes a few settings on my computer. Nothing major, and I can't say for sure, but it seems likely that the software that downloads automatically when you plug in this guy makes a few minor changes in the settings. But for forty bucks this thing is a steal.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Terrific Little DAC / Headphone Amp Awesome and inexpensive device for its intended design. I purchased it on the advice of an in-house audio writer and, as he told me, it has really cleaned up and focused the audio signal from my iMac. It sounds equally great through headphones and the Klipsch 2.1 speaker system connected to the computer. The before-and-after difference in sound quality is palpable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great if you know what your getting First off its important to understand how to change the quality of the sound in your Mac and Windows. When you hook it up it will default to not the best settings this unit is capable of producing. That said, sound is a lot more balanced, pleasant then what my card on Mac mini or my macbook pro produces but it's not a huge upgrade. However when connected to my surface 3, it makes tons of difference. Either way it was worth it to me and I am very happy.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice little work DAC or for on the go Inexpensive, cleans up the audio significantly at work. Finally my ears can rest all those hours at the ax. Just a reminder, this little unit will only amplify slightly and does not have a volume dial on the device. Recommended for those that can and want to have clear audio when not at home enjoying their stacks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Made me fall in love with my music again I don't consider myself a audiophile. But when I replaced my HTC 10 with a Pixel 2, it was clear I wasn't getting the same quality or loudness using the little DAC that comes with the Pixel into my 58-ohm Senal SMH-1000s. Unlike the HTC, I needed nearly max volume on my NYC subway commutes to reach tolerable loudness. And it still didn't sound as good as they did on my HTC. I was getting pretty desperate, so I picked up a K1 at a nearby store. And using the adapter that came with my Pixel 2, I literally plugged and played, and...completely transformed my musical experience. Seriously, I've never heard my Senals sound this great before. Bass back on my HTC 10 was light but detailed enough for me to be content - but with the K1, it gains a satisfying strength alongside that detail. And at the higher end, brass instruments are amazingly clear and realistic. Everything sounds more realistic, actually - voices in podcasts and singing, strings in classical, percussion in latin... I'm confident I can throw pretty much anything at this setup now and hear it pretty close to how it was intended. But maybe the thing I noticed most was the soundstage, which was widened like I'd never heard before. All of a sudden, sound was seemingly coming from the room around me, and not from the headphones. It was truly transformative for me. Altogether, this combo of my K1 and Senal SMH-1000s made me fall in love with my music all over again. The only thing that would really improve the K1 for me is if it had a USB C plug instead of a micro, since the adapter that comes with the Pixel is so dang bulky. A micro->C cable resolved that pretty well, though. And a neutral thing to note is that it doesn't have a battery (owing to its small size), and as such drains my Pixel's battery a heck of a lot faster. That's not surprising, though, since the whole point was that my Senals needed more power than what the Pixel's dongle was providing. If you have the same or similar headphones as me, and a Pixel 2, I couldn't recommend this more highly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Can't ask for more. For its price you are not gonna find any better. A solid pick for entry-level of hifi audio world. Anyone should upgrade their low-quality integrated audio source right now.
