Protecting your Sony a7-series camera and improving its hand held ergonomics for shooting are just two of the many features of the Tilta ES-T17-A Handheld Camera Cage Rig. The precision-machined, form-fitting cage is made from aluminum alloy, providing a balance between durability and strength as well as numerous threaded 1/4"-20 accessory mounting points.

Once the camera is mounted in the cage, the included HDMI plug protector connects the included micro-HDMI to HDMI cable to the camera's micro-HDMI port and is clamped in place, providing a full-sized HDMI connector. This makes it easier to connect HDMI cables and means you don't have to worry about wearing out or damaging the micro-HDMI port by repeatedly plugging and replugging a micro-HDMI cable into your camera body. The HDMI plug protector clamps the micro-HDMI adapter cable in place and also attaches to the cage itself, acting as a strain relief and providing a platform for the full-sized HDMI connector to attach, so it doesn't just dangle freely.

The cage features an orientable, removable wooden grip for user comfort as well as a removable top handle that features 1/4"-20 accessory mounting points and a cold shoe. The cage also includes a 15mm LWS support rod system, featuring rod clamps, a pair of 300mm threaded rods, and three 1/4"-20 threaded helical coil inserts for attaching the rod support system to a separately available QR/Sliding baseplate, tripod, or other 1/4"-20 mounting equipment.

The cage attaches to the included 15mm LWS support rods via a quick release system that allows you to easily remove the cage from the rods for a minimum-sized shooting package or quickly remount the camera to the rods when working with rod-mounted accessories. The design of the system ensures that the lens' center height to the rods conforms to industry standards for using rod-mounted accessories. The included EF and PL supports work with available Metabones EF and PL mount adapters (must be purchased separately).

The cage includes two removable mounting rails, one for the a7, a7S, and a7R, and the second for the a7 II, a7S II, and a7R II.
The included wood handgrip features a start/stop-recording trigger and takes a AAA battery (not included). The handgrip mounts to the cage via an ARRI-compatible rosette system that allows you to adjust the angle of the handgrip for your comfort.
This form-fitting cage features 89 1/4"-20 threaded mounting holes, useful for attaching accessories like the included single 15mm rod clamp.
The top handle features an accessory cold shoe mount, and it can be oriented either facing forward, rear, or to either side. It mounts via a top rail and can be slid on and off from either side. Integrated into the top handle are nine 3/8"-16 and twelve 1/4"-20 threaded accessory mounting holes.
The 15mm LWS support rod system features three 1/4"-20 helical coil inserts for tripod mounting and an integrated Tilta-compatible dovetail (dovetail plate not included).
Included lens mount adapter supports are compatible with Metabones EF and PL-to-E-mount adapters.
Locking levers are of the standard Tilta spring-loaded design.

ES-T17-A Handheld Camera Cage Rig for Sony a7 & a7 II Series Cameras is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 43.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Fantastic Ergonomics, Trouble Connecting Cable for Record Brilliant ergonomics of the cage. Really the best. Very well made and also very intuitive. Modular enough to make it work for whatever you need. Extreme negative is that when you connect the cable to the wooden handle, it only works periodically. And even worse, I have pressed the button on the handle, it starts recording, then without even me touching the camera, the grip stops the recording but the green light on the wooden handle is still going. Really bad since I missed a lot of an interview. So I would definitely not recommend using the button or even connecting the wooden handle cable. Just use it ergonomically.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ecellent Small Cage This cage holds our Sony a7s for all shoots. It's easy to use, relatively light, looks good and has several good features such as: comfortable wood handle/grip, easily removeable top handle and cage from baseplate, secured hook-up for HDMI cable. We are planning to use our a7s with this cage on (minus handle and baseplate), on our Ronin M gimbal. We chose 12 rods to go with the baseplate and they hold a lens support piece for our Sony telephoto zoom lens and a small matte box, plus a separate battery on the back end of the rods. The wooden handle has a stop/start button to start video recording and it has worked for us starting either the camera recording or our Atmos Shogun.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great quality, a few kinks Has a very nice build quality. My A7r ii pops right in with ease and setup is quick and intuitive. Hand grip feels great but record button sticks. Still trying to lube it to make it work properly. Also, the record button only seems to work to stop and start recording in movie mode, I have not been able to assign it as a shutter release for stills. If I'm in manual mode for stills it overrides and starts to record video. This was disappointing. I've emailed Tilta about this with a response that they would soon have a response . . . but not response in 5 days. That is a big deal to me and one of the main reasons why I spent hundreds more than its competitors. We get those issued ironed out and I'd go 5 stars.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rock Solid Love this. I have never had a cage on a camera before. Now I wonder how I handled the camera before. The top handle makes things so much easier. On this specific model, the record button on the wooden handle is really easy to press. Love having that as an option. The feel of the wooden handle is pretty good too, and it is easy to reposition. My only gripe is that they do not sell this rig without the rails. I wish there was an option for $100 less that did not have the rails. I don't need those right now. Have it available as an add on. I have yet to use the HDMI connection provided, so I cannot comment on that. I know a lot of others complained about it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Essential cage for productions After using my A7S ii on a production I quickly felt the need to get a cage. My main concern was protecting the micro hdmi, it already started to feel loose after one full day of moving the camera around the set. Then I consistently used my heavy Canon 70-200mm and didn't care for letting the a7s hang of the back of it. This Tilta rig took care of those issues and added lots of mounting options. All around it's great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A7s II cage from Tilta my favorite so far I have purchased three cages so far for my SONY A7s and A7s II. The one from Wooden Camera was great but ergonomically not my favorite. The Motion 9 cage was an improvement for me but still didn't feel just right. I purchased the Titla ES-T17-A cage with wooden grip and installed my A7s II in it last week. It feels great and I love the start/stop remote on the wooden handle. Everything is laid out well and easy to disassemble or reassemble as needed. To have the wooden handle, great cable protector option and the rod system setup in a package at this price level is great. We will use it on a shoot next week for the first time but in just playing with it so far I could not be happier with this purchase.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from It's Good... It's well thought out. You can get to the battery door and SD Card slot without undoing anything, and that's good. This was our pick out of many different options because of it's compatibility with the Sony XLR-K2M XLR Audio Adapter. They (Tilta) neglect to tell you that you need an optional part to extent the handle up and make it compatible. I was able to move the handle to the side and make it work, but there is only one screw securing it now. I'm glad that we sprung for the walnut hand grip. It's great to have a real stop/start button for video record. I wish that it could work as a shutter release too while taking stills. It's a bit cumbersome to reach the shutter button with the cage installed.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from An almost perfect beauty Great looks, robust, great weight, perfect form factor but... 1) Separating the upper and lower parts of the cage isn't smooth. gotta press an upside down lock-release bead that requires a quirky left hand position. Not the best design. 2) Once the bead is pressed sliding the topmost part away from the bottommost part isn't smooth. It's quite jerky. 3) When the top part is freed from the bottom part, it cannot be placed on a tripod unless you unscrew a little baseplate. Again not very practical. But outside of these three negatives, the cage's a stylish dream!
