Canon SX540 HS overview

  • 1Description

Characterized by its long-reaching zoom, the Canon PowerShot SX540 HS Digital Camera is also benefitted by the inclusion of a 20.3MP High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor and DIGIC 6 image processor to realize notable image quality, sensitivity to ISO 3200, and 5.9 fps continuous shooting, as well as the ability to record full HD 1080p video at 60 fps. The 50x optical zoom lens covers a 24-1200mm equivalent focal length range, spanning wide-angle to super telephoto perspectives, and an Intelligent IS image stabilization system supports this range by minimizing the appearance of camera shake when shooting both photos and movies. Balancing this extended reach, an ergonomic body design incorporates a large grip for further stability, as well as a large 3.0" 461k-dot LCD for composing imagery and reviewing photos and movies. Additionally, built-in Wi-Fi with NFC allows you to wirelessly share your imagery directly to a linked smartphone or tablet.

20.3MP CMOS Sensor and DIGIC 6 Image Processor
A 20.3MP 1/2.3" High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor pairs with the DIGIC 6 image processor to realize notable image quality and sensitivity to benefit both stills shooting and full HD 1080p video recording at 60 fps and 30 fps. Together, the sensor and processor also allow for continuous shooting up to 5.9 fps, to benefit working with moving subjects, and provides sensitivity to ISO 3200 for working in difficult lighting conditions.
50x Zoom Lens and Intelligent Image Stabilization
An expansive 50x optical zoom lens offers a 24-1200mm equivalent focal length range, covering wide-angle to super telephoto perspectives. This extensive reach is complemented by a versatile Intelligent IS image stabilization system that minimizes the appearance of camera shake for both stills and video shooting:

  • Normal IS corrects for a wide range of common camera movements.
  • Panning IS detects deliberate panning movements and does not compensate for lateral movements to permit desired camera movements.
  • Macro (Hybrid) IS corrects for shift-type camera shake that commonly occurs when working with close-up subject matter.
  • Tripod is a dedicated setting that automatically deactivates IS when the use of a tripod is detected since camera-based stabilization is not needed.

  • Dynamic IS is well-suited to recording at wide-angle focal lengths and reduces unwanted shaking that typically occurs when walking while recording.
  • Powered IS compensates for hand movements that become more visually discernible when working at the telephoto end of the zoom range.
  • Macro (Hybrid) IS minimizes the appearance of shake when walking as well as compensates for shift-type shake that occurs when working with close-up subject matter.
  • Active Tripod IS minimizes the slight amount of shake that can happen when recording video while using a tripod.
Built-In Wi-Fi with NFC
Built-in Wi-Fi with NFC allows you to wirelessly share your photos and movies with a linked smartphone or tablet as well as remotely control the camera from the mobile device by using the Camera Connect app. A dedicated Wi-Fi button is also featured on the camera body to expedite the process of connecting with a smartphone or tablet and sharing imagery between devices.
Other Camera Features
  • A large 3.0" 461k-dot LCD monitor is available for composing imagery, navigating the menu, and reviewing photos and videos.
  • Zoom Framing Assist automatically zooms in or out to keep a subject within the frame and in focus when using longer telephoto focal lengths.
  • Hybrid Auto records up to four seconds of video prior to taking a still photo, and then automatically combines the two types of imagery into a video recap.
  • Story Highlights can automatically produce a highlight reel, comprised of videos and photos from a day or an event, and then add music and effects for playback.
  • The included NB-6LH battery is rated to provide approximately 205 shots per charge, or up to 290 shots when using the ECO Mode to conserve power.

Canon SX540 HS reviews

PowerShot SX540 HS Digital Camera is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Camera I am always searching for the perfect point and shoot that I can use with results closer to my DSLR. This camera gets me closer. I haven't played with it a lot yet but the zoom can really blow things up, the macro shots I've take seem to work well. I took a few sunrise photos with good results and amazing colors. I took low light shot of our Christmas tree messing with different ISO and got some incredible detail on the tree. The outdoor Christmas lights using the camera handheld weren't so good but I only used auto - it was way to cold to mess with settings that night. So far I am pleased.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excellent photo quality & zoom, lacking a couple features I took the camera on a vacation to Puerto Rico the day after I received it, so I shot mostly with the Auto function. The range of the optical zoom is amazing, and the quality of the photos is excellent. The Auto function worked extremely well in almost every setting, except for capturing motion in low light. It did an excellent job with photos of still objects in low light. I know the Auto setting is supposed to handle everything for me, and I know I can manually override shutter speed and ISO, but one feature that is lacking that REALLY bothers me is that I cannot force the flash to fire. The camera wants to compensate on its own for back-lighting, but sometimes you just need to force the flash to fix the problem, particularly if you are taking a photo of someone with a dark face, like someone of African American descent. The other feature that I wish this camera had is an actual viewfinder in addition to the LCD screen. It can be difficult to view your shot in very bright sunlight, although it was better than I expected.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent camera with great features I needed a new camera since my original Powershot 1 was 12 yrs old. The SX540 is just as described and an excellent camera! Photo quality is very high. It has the familiar features of the original powershot - many modes, built in video camera, options to adjust exposure and saturation while taking pictures. The zoom is amazing, and it's half the weight of the original. And the built in wifi, love that!!! SO COOL to be able to use your phone to control the camera at a distance and instantly transfer pictures from the memory card to your device. Very useful. My only qualms are that you can't manually make it take photos with the flash (it won't let you control the flash in case something is backlit) and it doesn't have a swiveling viewing screen. But those are minor, overall I love this camera!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent camera This camera takes pictures that are detailed and crystal clear. I love the powerful zoom lens and the image stabilization. My hands shake a bit when I zoom in and the image stabilization removes the shake. I originally wanted a pocket size point and shoot camera but I love this camera for it's crystal clear detailed images and powerful zoom.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Pictures for a small and lightweight camera This camera is very lightweight and still makes great pictures. The quality is not exactly what you get from a DSLR, but if you don't want to carry a big and heavy lense, or even multiple with you, then this is a perfect choice. We were on vacation together, I was using the Rebel SL1 and my wife used the SX540 HS. She loved it. The Superzoom gets you so close to wildlife that is far away and the quality is absolutely comparable to the SL1. The average user would not see a difference. Personally, I do not like to use the screen on the back, and this camera does not have a finder. The quality of the screen is not very good, so most of the times it looks like the pictures you are taking are bad quality, but after you load them to your PC or phone, they look great. The integrated WiFi is a great feature. You can quickly connect it to your smartphone and add locations, search the pictures and even download them to your phone to send to friends right away. So if you are looking for a lightweight midsize camera that makes great pictures, has a great zoom, then go for it. I was really tempted to send it back after I used it for 2 days, but after the vacation, we saw how good the pictures are, we will keep it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Mixed feelings on this point and shoot camera The photos this camera takes are very nice. But it is hard to use because it does not have a tilt view window. Like the wifi connectivity!
