Canon ELPH 190 IS overview

  • 1Description

A pocketable point-and-shoot with versatile zoom lens, the blue PowerShot ELPH 190 IS Digital Camera from Canon is a sleek, convenient camera featuring a 20.0MP 1/2.3" CCD sensor and DIGIC 4+ image processor. The sensor and processor combine to afford notable image quality and sensitivity to ISO 1600, as well as the ability to record HD 720p videos at 25 fps. A 10x optical zoom lens permits working with a variety of subjects, ranging from near to far, and an Intelligent IS image stabilization system compensates for the effects of camera shake to produce sharper handheld photos. A 2.7" 230k-dot LCD monitor is available for composing your shots and reviewing imagery, and built-in Wi-Fi with NFC allows for wireless transferring of photos and movies to mobile devices. Rounding out the ELPH 190 IS' feature-set, the camera also sports a Smart AUTO mode for intelligently selecting exposure settings, Scene Modes to creatively affect the look of images, ECO Mode to save on battery life, and a dedicated Help Button for learning more about the specific camera controls.

20.0MP 1/2.3" CCD image sensor pairs with the DIGIC 4+ image processor to realize notable image clarity and sensitivity to ISO 1600 to support working in a variety of conditions. Additionally, the sensor and processor combine to provide a 2.2 fps continuous shooting rate as well as HD 720p video recording at 25 fps.
A versatile 10x optical zoom lens offers a 24-240mm equivalent focal length range, covering wide-angle to telephoto perspectives. This broad reach is complemented by a versatile Intelligent IS image stabilization system that minimizes the appearance of camera shake for both stills and video shooting:

  • Normal IS corrects for a wide range of common camera movements.
  • Panning IS detects deliberate panning movements and does not compensate for lateral movements to permit desired camera movements.
  • Macro (Hybrid) IS corrects for shift-type camera shake that commonly occurs when working with close-up subject matter.
  • Tripod is a dedicated setting that automatically deactivates IS when the use of a tripod is detected since camera-based stabilization is not needed.

  • Dynamic IS is well-suited to recording at wide-angle focal lengths and reduces unwanted shaking that typically occurs when walking while recording.
  • Powered IS compensates for hand movements that become more visually discernible when working at the telephoto end of the zoom range.
  • Macro (Hybrid) IS minimizes the appearance of shake when walking as well as compensates for shift-type shake that occurs when working with close-up subject matter.
  • Active Tripod IS minimizes the slight amount of shake that can happen when recording video while using a tripod.
Built-in Wi-Fi with NFC allows you to wirelessly share your photos and movies with a linked smartphone or tablet as well as remotely control the camera from the mobile device by using the Camera Connect app. A dedicated Wi-Fi button is also featured on the camera body to expedite the process of connecting with a smartphone or tablet and sharing imagery between devices.
A 2.7" 230k-dot rear LCD monitor is available for composing imagery, navigating the menu, or reviewing photos and videos.
Smart AUTO intelligently selects the proper camera settings based on recognized shooting situations.
A variety of Shooting Modes can be used to optimize the camera's settings based on a specific scene type you are working in, including Low Light, Portrait, and Fireworks modes.
Scene Modes, such as Fisheye Effect, Toy Camera Effect, and Monochrome, help to creatively adjust the look of your photographs in-camera.
ECO Mode intelligently reduces your power consumption, aiding in producing longer battery life for more shooting time.
For quickly familiarizing oneself with the camera, a Help Button provides a convenient explanation of the various camera settings and controls.

Canon ELPH 190 IS reviews

PowerShot ELPH 190 IS Digital Camera (Blue) is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 32.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good spur of the moment decision! A friend visited me here in Montana so we decided to take the drive to Glacier National Park and I wanted to make sure we drove the "Road to the sun". Well, not having a camera I zoomed to the local electronics store about picked up this canon and I am so glad I did. The camera is amazing. The images are beautiful.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Very Poor Focus and slow I Like Canon, This camera is slow and can not focus 60% of the time. I have to keep resetting it to Auto for the best results and the results are not good.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Small Platform / Familiar Controls / Poor Battery Got this for a 5.5 day cycling trip. Charged it up, took about 170 photo's over the first 5 days. Went to use it the last day, dead battery. I was a little surprised that I only got 170 shots off a single full charge. Most of the shots, full daylights, no flash. Of the shots I did take, I was happy with the quality, happy with the zoom. The screen is a bit tough to see in full sunlight.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Just right! This is the camera I take camping and backpacking. Its rechargeable battery lasts a long time and it's easy to tuck in a waterproof bag to keep moisture, dirt, and sand out of it. It connects to my computer just fine with a USB cord or I can take the memory card out and pop it in a card reader. My photos have been great -- good, even color, nice contrast. The zoom allows me to get photos of lizards and other small animals without upsetting them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A good exemplar of the ELPH tradition Always liked the ELPH series, decent cameras that fit in my pocket so I'm never without. My PowerShot 340 was fine but dying; the lens covers wouldn't open or close all the way without help and the zoom was getting intermittent, both problems likely caused by dust even though I slip it into a case in my pocket. The 190 is very similar, with almost everything I loved and, sadly, things I didn't, like the lack of panorama assist and the unfortunate placement of too many buttons right where you need to grip the camera. Two features I really loved, macro focus and image brightness, have moved from instantly available to deep down in a menu. 20Mpx vs. the 340's 16Mpx--not sure this improves anything but it does make the files even bigger. I have no use for the WiFi feature so can't comment on that.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from This is not the quality that CANON is known for A few years ago, I purchased the Canon POWER SHOT 110. It came in a nice box and its presentation indicated to me that CANON had pride in this product. There was an instruction book, the camera strap, and the wires to attach the camera to a computer. The body of the camera was made of metal. It looked solid and well made. For six years and thousands of pictures, this little "cheap" camera came up with great images; until earlier this week, "the engine that could" died. So, based on my previous experiences, I bought the CANON 190 IS. I wish that I had not... Upon initial review, the presentation box is ugly. It's a box to hold that camera.Period.It is missing the allure of "this is a quality product from CANON". Instead, the camera is jammed into the thinest, box possible; so tightly that it was very hard to remove it. The instruction book is just a piece of paper, and there are no wires to connect to the computer. The body of the camera itself is made of cheap glossy plastic, and like most things now, it is made in China. I think that CANON just made this product to say that they offer point and shoots, whereas others, do not. Don't let the fact this camera produces a 20MP image fool you. If the camera quality is not good, the images will be the same. Image quality- not great. It certainly is not the quality I expect(ed) from CANON; one of the leaders in the industry. It would have been best to not make this product and maintain the standards that CANON is known for. All in all, the camera is ok if you don't care about the image and need the camera to just "record something" (image or video). Very disappointed. I wish that it could return it for full refund, but to do so, would cost me a fortune. I do not live in the USA, but Canada. Use your camera phone. It is about the same quality, maybe better.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Nope, don't buy it. The Wifi setup is way too complicated. One reason not to get it. You need to get an extra cable if you want to use the USP port. Access to settings for taking pictures are hidden. Who will go there if you want to take a quick picture. I mean this is not the beginning of the 20th century where people sat for quite a while until their picture was taken. (You know that is why they always look so grumpy on these pictures). It also takes a while until the camera actually and eventually snaps to take the picture and then to reset. No recommendation here.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from poor firmware I have an ELPH 110 HS and wanted another similar pocket camera. The longer zoom range on this ELPH 190 seemed attractive. However, I discovered this ELPH 190 doesn't have a 1:1 image format choice, like the 110 HS does. When the 190 is on monochrome, you cannot set its flash to default off. Its flash keeps turning back on with each on/off cycle. This Elph 190's firmware is worse than previous models. Image quality of the 190 is also worse than the 110HS's.
