Canon ELPH 190 IS overview

  • 1Description

A pocketable point-and-shoot with versatile zoom lens, the blue PowerShot ELPH 190 IS Digital Camera from Canon is a sleek, convenient camera featuring a 20.0MP 1/2.3" CCD sensor and DIGIC 4+ image processor. The sensor and processor combine to afford notable image quality and sensitivity to ISO 1600, as well as the ability to record HD 720p videos at 25 fps. A 10x optical zoom lens permits working with a variety of subjects, ranging from near to far, and an Intelligent IS image stabilization system compensates for the effects of camera shake to produce sharper handheld photos. A 2.7" 230k-dot LCD monitor is available for composing your shots and reviewing imagery, and built-in Wi-Fi with NFC allows for wireless transferring of photos and movies to mobile devices. Rounding out the ELPH 190 IS' feature-set, the camera also sports a Smart AUTO mode for intelligently selecting exposure settings, Scene Modes to creatively affect the look of images, ECO Mode to save on battery life, and a dedicated Help Button for learning more about the specific camera controls.

20.0MP 1/2.3" CCD image sensor pairs with the DIGIC 4+ image processor to realize notable image clarity and sensitivity to ISO 1600 to support working in a variety of conditions. Additionally, the sensor and processor combine to provide a 2.2 fps continuous shooting rate as well as HD 720p video recording at 25 fps.
A versatile 10x optical zoom lens offers a 24-240mm equivalent focal length range, covering wide-angle to telephoto perspectives. This broad reach is complemented by a versatile Intelligent IS image stabilization system that minimizes the appearance of camera shake for both stills and video shooting:

Stills:
  • Normal IS corrects for a wide range of common camera movements.
  • Panning IS detects deliberate panning movements and does not compensate for lateral movements to permit desired camera movements.
  • Macro (Hybrid) IS corrects for shift-type camera shake that commonly occurs when working with close-up subject matter.
  • Tripod is a dedicated setting that automatically deactivates IS when the use of a tripod is detected since camera-based stabilization is not needed.

Video:
  • Dynamic IS is well-suited to recording at wide-angle focal lengths and reduces unwanted shaking that typically occurs when walking while recording.
  • Powered IS compensates for hand movements that become more visually discernible when working at the telephoto end of the zoom range.
  • Macro (Hybrid) IS minimizes the appearance of shake when walking as well as compensates for shift-type shake that occurs when working with close-up subject matter.
  • Active Tripod IS minimizes the slight amount of shake that can happen when recording video while using a tripod.
Built-in Wi-Fi with NFC allows you to wirelessly share your photos and movies with a linked smartphone or tablet as well as remotely control the camera from the mobile device by using the Camera Connect app. A dedicated Wi-Fi button is also featured on the camera body to expedite the process of connecting with a smartphone or tablet and sharing imagery between devices.
A 2.7" 230k-dot rear LCD monitor is available for composing imagery, navigating the menu, or reviewing photos and videos.
Smart AUTO intelligently selects the proper camera settings based on recognized shooting situations.
A variety of Shooting Modes can be used to optimize the camera's settings based on a specific scene type you are working in, including Low Light, Portrait, and Fireworks modes.
Scene Modes, such as Fisheye Effect, Toy Camera Effect, and Monochrome, help to creatively adjust the look of your photographs in-camera.
ECO Mode intelligently reduces your power consumption, aiding in producing longer battery life for more shooting time.
For quickly familiarizing oneself with the camera, a Help Button provides a convenient explanation of the various camera settings and controls.

Canon ELPH 190 IS reviews

PowerShot ELPH 190 IS Digital Camera (Blue) is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 29.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good spur of the moment decision! A friend visited me here in Montana so we decided to take the drive to Glacier National Park and I wanted to make sure we drove the "Road to the sun". Well, not having a camera I zoomed to the local electronics store about picked up this canon and I am so glad I did. The camera is amazing. The images are beautiful.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product, easy to use and pictures are really sharp. Had it only a few days and was witness to a theft in progress and took pictures from about 100 yards away, and got perfect pictures of thief and get-away vehicle. Everyone was impressed. Thief is in jail now only because of the pictures I took.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Small Platform / Familiar Controls / Poor Battery Got this for a 5.5 day cycling trip. Charged it up, took about 170 photo's over the first 5 days. Went to use it the last day, dead battery. I was a little surprised that I only got 170 shots off a single full charge. Most of the shots, full daylights, no flash. Of the shots I did take, I was happy with the quality, happy with the zoom. The screen is a bit tough to see in full sunlight.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A good exemplar of the ELPH tradition Always liked the ELPH series, decent cameras that fit in my pocket so I'm never without. My PowerShot 340 was fine but dying; the lens covers wouldn't open or close all the way without help and the zoom was getting intermittent, both problems likely caused by dust even though I slip it into a case in my pocket. The 190 is very similar, with almost everything I loved and, sadly, things I didn't, like the lack of panorama assist and the unfortunate placement of too many buttons right where you need to grip the camera. Two features I really loved, macro focus and image brightness, have moved from instantly available to deep down in a menu. 20Mpx vs. the 340's 16Mpx--not sure this improves anything but it does make the files even bigger. I have no use for the WiFi feature so can't comment on that.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Very Poor Focus and slow I Like Canon, This camera is slow and can not focus 60% of the time. I have to keep resetting it to Auto for the best results and the results are not good.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from PowerShot no way to connect to Sierra I'm very disappointed with the wifi connection software for the Mac OS. I've wasted many many hours trying to connect this camera to my Mac and I think there is absolutely no way to do it. Very frustrating

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not up to Canon's previous quality in P&S cams The CA was unacceptable in this, even for a P&S and the build quality is NOT what I've come to expect from Canon! As a pro-photographer, a P&S is generally my tertiary camera, keep it in the strap case on my pack at all times for quick shots or videos for evaluation shots. Previous Canon's at this price point have been superlative. Now, they seem to be getting cheaper and cheaper. Even the finish now, NOT the matte you see in Canon's advert pics, but a blindingly glossy, shiny plastic thing, exudes, cheap consumer make it shiny and bright garbage. In fact, because of the over-the-top glossy finish, I couldn't use this where I shoot overseas, even if it produced Leica quality output. Cheap, chintzy, shiny (lure the consumer with how glossy new this tinker-toy looks!) and not even the output I'd expect even from a cheaper P&S camera. Canon dropped the ball here!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from At this time I cannot recommend this product. I carried a Power shot camera for 15 years in my pocket and it worked great, it just wore out because I used it so much. At first I thought there was a learning curve on the 190 IS. Tried to get use to it's quirks but to no avail. Tried to contact Canon but their web site is a night mare, which surprised me because I own several of their cameras and other equipment and have never before had a problem with them. For the time being, I would not buy this camera.
