Korg Minilogue Reviews

Maybe THE Most Efficient Introduction to Analog Synthesis

The Korg Minilogue is a SUPER fun & intuitive analog synth for everyone from beginners to seasoned synthesits. I've been programming synths for 20 years and this was just as fun as the first synth I ever used. Its analog sound is wonderful and thick. Almost everything has a knob or switch for control and, for the patches I was making, I never went into the menus for further editing beyond naming patches and setting sequencer settings. The shape control of the oscillators gives a lot of variation to your standard waveforms and the sync/ring-mod, cross modulation, & pitch envelope of oscillator two really open up the sonic possibilities. I very much enjoy the dedicated switch for velocity modulation of the filter cutoff and I like that there are only two modulation depths beyond none. My favorite feature of the Minilogue is the envelope modulation of either the rate or the intensity of the LFO. This really gives a sense of motion to what is already a sense of motion from the LFO. My only complaint is that the LFO doesn't go fast enough for analog-FM style tones. It's not nearly as fast as the LFO on the Monologue but that's more of an observation that a full drawback. I really enjoyed the different voice modes of this synth, really finding mono, which introduces a variable level sub, and chord, which creates various fixed chords, to be the most useful beyond the standard poly mode. This is by far the best poly synth I have ever found for someone who is interested in learning analog synthesis. The knobs and switches along with the actual layout of them makes programming make sense and a joy to use. The Minilogue does have mini-keys but the mini keys Korg has been using for their new synths are really great. Much better than the microKORG. With the Minilogue, Korg really show us that there will always be room for one more analog synth.

What it is and isn't

No way to disable the step sequencer being started by KRONOS sequencer when connected for the master midi clock from KRONOS. Popping sound when using slow attack. No sustain pedal input. No accessible portamento switch. Small keys. Nice price. Nice design. Sounds good but not exceptional. I got a NORD Lead A1 proving, you get what you pay for. WOW, what sound and obedient to my midi chain. 24 poly and sounds much better. The Minilogue is in the box, in the basement, and will likely stay there until I give it away or sell it for a pittance.

Portable and really fun!

The Minilogue is a really fun to use synthesizer, with an immediate interface to tweak and a great sound, while also affordable. At first I wasn't so sure about its sound, but had a test drive and it really impressed me (all 3 times in consecutive days). Even as an affordable synth, it has its own thing and can sound amazing. Been using it mostly for pad and keyboard(ish) bell sounds, and it is great at it. Throw in an external delay pedal and you're good for days. Sound-wise, it doesn't have the aggressively low end you find on other synths, but it is very good at mid-range. I love the filter tonality, and while not the most versatile beast, it is certainly capable of doing some impressive things. The hardware is also very well made for what you pay... good metallic plate on top, mini-keys that are way better than traditional ones, all necessary tools for customizing simple and complex sounds (although limited in terms of modulations), nice knobs and switches, ideal size (love this small footprint). There's a single thing I don't enjoy much: the pitch bend lever. I'd rather have a single modulation one... this aside, an amazing little synth.

Amazing Analog Synth!

Been waiting for so long to get my hands on one of these! Ever since I opened the box I've been in love. For the price point you can't beat it. I've been using the Korg R3 for about 5 years and a Roland SH-32 for about a year, this is a perfect addition to my setup! If you're in the market for an analog synth.. BUY THIS ONE!

This thing is dope!

Excellent value packed into a small package. If you're lucky enough to find one in stock pick it up quick because they move fast. Hours of entertainment.

Great Analog Poly, Great Price

The minilogue is a full fledged 4 voice polyphonic analog synth with 1 LFO. You can save patches (200) and the oscilloscope is helpful for patch building. When recalling patches, there are several options for the knobs too-- the default is to 'jump' to the value that the knob is turned to, but there is also a 'catch' option that won't change the parameter until you move the knob to where it was in the saved patch-- this is very helpful for live performance to ensure smooth parameter transitions! I have been using in both studio and live setting. Overall a surprisingly well made and feature-full analog synth... hard to believe korg packed everything in at such a low pricepoint for analog polys!

question

How is the MIDI interface? are all the nobs working and effecting the different sounds?
Asked by: Anonymous
I use MIDI in and out, have no problem. I don't use the Minilogue as a controller, it's in the middle of my setup but the MIDI is great and the Editing is surprisingly easy once you know your way around the Editing mode. All the knobs work, meaning they all do something to affect the wave or sound. Some knobs have several purposes so that takes a little getting used to.

question

Can i use in Asia 220V?
Asked by: Jargalbat
I don't remember getting a 220v adapter plug with my Minilogue. I just remember getting the AC 9V adapter. Hope this helped.
