  • 1Description

Add some light to your macro shots with the versatile VM-210 Flexible Macro Light from Bolt which slides right into your camera's hot shoe. Equipped with two LED arrays, each on their own flexible arms, users will be able to easily position the light where they need. The LEDs are rated to output 970 lux at 12" or as much as 4200 lux when placed as close as 6". This light has seven levels of power adjustment so that a photographer's exact requirements can be dialed in as needed. Continuous and flash modes are available for working with both video and stills. The flash mode offers the additional feature of being able to turn on only the left or right side for further control over the final look.

Making the light intuitive and simple to use is a 1.6" backlit LCD screen that clearly displays all relevant information. There is an automatic power saving function that limits battery drain when the light is not in use. Additionally, it runs on four easily found AA batteries.

    Bolt VM-210 reviews

VM-210 Flexible Macro Light is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Useful, but not versital as I thought it would be. It has 3 modes, Light, Flash, R or L. In the light mode both lights come on and stay on at whatever level you set. Flash mode both light flash for a half second at the set level. The R & L side only work in the flash mode so the only way you can set one up is in light Mode with both on, you have to move the one you don't want out of the way and then go the R or L which is a flash mode, wastes the batteries. I also though you would be able to use them with different levels on each, but only one can be used at a time. There is a Set button on the back which doesn't do anything and is not mentioned in the very poor manual.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bolt VM-210 Small unit that is huge in results 5 Star unit for the macro enthusiast!!!! This is the answer I have been hunting for for over a year. I have many flash units, constant lighting units, flashlights, mounts and an assortment of lighting that flat out failed to give me the needed light to produce fantastic macro shots. Well the VM-210 is not one of them. Not only does it work for flash shooting but there is a continuous light switch to keep the lights on while doing close in work. This unit has LED light mounted on 2 flexible antennas that are very easy to position to get the best light on any macro subject regardless of how close you are to the subject. The arms are over 12 long and can be aimed at or around the subject. This is easy to use as well being able to use AA batteries, A continuous light switch with 5 volume settings. The Strobe portion has 5 volume of light settings that can be used in tandem or 1 at a time for flexibility. After using this for more than a week I have found this inexpensive flash to be effective for the macro work I do and can even see it used for flash photography and video as well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Useful Addition to Macro Kit Not exactly what I expected but having had some time to work out a different approach to my macro work, I do like this unit. Being able to turn on the heads as a continuous light source makes sharp focusing a lot easier. While you can adjust the output +/- 3 stops, it applies to both heads. You can compensate by shifting the position of each head but it would be nice to be able to adjust each head individually but at this price point, it's a good unit.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Exactly what I expected Works well for macro as well as close up shots. It does not replace your ring light but a good complement as you can control the direction of the light source to give your photo a move dramatic feel. It can adjust the power output from -3 to +3, however, it does not seem to correspond to EV value.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use and a great value. I purchased the VM-210 for use with my Nikon 105 mm macro lens. I have found that it works very well. Although it does not support through-the-lens metering, it is very easy to adjust with seven illumination levels and the option of using either the right hand, the left hand or both lights. I like that you can use the VM-210 with both constant illumination and with a flash mode. The constant illumination mode which acts like a modeling light, permits a very easy previsualization. All and all a great value for the price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty good light. The light operated in 2 modes: flash and constant illumination. I like it for constant illumination, but as a flash it is not good because it takes too long to flash. It won't synch with my camera. For the price it is good, and it works very well in one mode.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Keep shopping While this light provides enough extra light for outdoor macro, the light heads are difficult to keep in position. The flex arms just aren't strong enough. Usable, but with some frustration.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very nice macro lighting alternative I've got a lot of lighting options for macro and the Bolt VM-210 is going to be one of my 2 go-to choices in the field (the other is a dedicated Canon macro flash). I'm using the Bolt 2 ways: mounted to the camera's hotshoe and freestanding, mounted to the mini-stand from a Canon flash. I wish the Bolt came with a stand, as it works very well in off-camera studio setups. This light has replaced a couple of LED booklights I was using, and it's a good complement to other lights in studio settings. Plusses: good battery life, constant light is great for setups and can be used for exposing, Daylight WB, separately adjustable output for each head, good controls, long arms reach over even a tele-macro lens to light the subject. Minuses: battery compartment door requires care when closing (fit and stiffness could be better), light isn't bright enough for a lot of field applications (but it's fine for static studio subjects).
