Tokina 14-20mm f/2.0 overview

  • 1Description

A fast wide-angle zoom for Nikon F mount DX-format DSLRs, the AT-X 14-20mm f/2 PRO DX Lens from Tokina spans a concise 21-30mm equivalent focal length range while retaining a bright, constant f/2 maximum aperture. Ensuring a high degree of sharpness and clarity throughout the wide-angle range, the optical design features an array of aspherical and Super Low Dispersion elements to minimize chromatic and spherical aberrations. A multi-layer, anti-reflective coating has also been added to individual elements to suppress flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting. In regard to handling, an internal focusing design enables quick, accurate autofocus performance that can quickly be overridden for manual control using the One-Touch Focus Clutch Mechanism. Well-suited to working in a variety of situations, the variety of wide-angle perspectives and bright maximum aperture are especially beneficial to landscape, reportage, and other environmental photography applications.

Compatible with Nikon F-mount DX-format DSLRs, this wide-angle zoom offers a 21-30mm equivalent focal length range.
Constant f/2 maximum aperture provides consistent performance throughout the zoom range and is well-suited to photographing in low-light conditions.
The 13 elements, 11 groups optical design includes one plastic-molded aspherical element, two Super Low Dispersion (SD) glass elements, and two glass-molded aspherical SD glass elements. This combination of aspherical and low dispersion elements helps to minimize chromatic and spherical aberrations throughout the zoom range for increased clarity, sharpness, and color accuracy.
A multi-layer, anti-reflective coating has been applied to individual elements to control lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast when working in harsh lighting conditions.
Pairing with an internal focusing design for quick AF performance, this lens also features a One-Touch Focus Clutch Mechanism for switching between AF and MF modes. By sliding the focusing ring back or forth, you can quickly change between focusing modes.
Nine diaphragm blades contribute to a pleasing quality of bokeh.

    Tokina 14-20mm f/2.0 reviews

    AT-X 14-20mm f/2 PRO DX Lens for Nikon F is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 18.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from True surprise I bought this lens to replace my Sigma 18-35/1.8 which is an amazing glass but frequent misfocusing. I tested Tokina 14-20/2 lens on both D7200 and Nikon D750 (in DX mode). The sharpness of Tokina is slightly better than either Nikon 14-24/2.8 or Tamron 15-30/2.8 and on-par with Sigma 18-35/1.8. Auto-focus has some delay but very snappy. In first 70 shots I had only one misfire. The lens didn't require any fine tuning (what I had to make to all five my Sigmas Art ). Lens feels like a solid, professional optic device. Negligible distortion allows shoot people close to frame border. Considering very interesting zoom limits, the best application would be a street photography or any other types of candid shooting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unbelievable image quality! I impulse purchased this lens after the price drop. I've been using a Tokina 11-16 f2.8 for my astro work and although fantastic glass and one of my favorites, my 1st gen version suffers some optical issues very typical of UWA glass, especially wide open. I love the idea of an f2 aperture for my astro work so I couldn't resist this new Tokina. This lens is unbelievable! I've only been using it a week, but every image has impressed me. I cannot believe the sharpness wide open. It gets even better stopped down. The fringing and coma present in other Tokina wides is almost non-existent. This lens truly performs like a fine prime. It is simply a joy to shoot with. I'm so excited for summer to point this lens towards the heavens!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharp wide angle for DX cameras My goal was a sharp wide angle for my Nikon D7200. I am familiar with the build quality of Tokina lenses, owning the 24-70 f2.8, the 70-200 f4, and the 12-28 f4. While the 12-28 gives a wider range of focal lengths, I have not found the resulting images to be of the same quality as the 24-70 and the 70-200. After reading reviews I selected this lens, even though it has a restricted range of focal lengths. I am very pleased with the purchase. Like other Tokina lenses, it is a very solid, heavy, well built lens. It is almost or at prime lens image quality across its focal lengths, with good color rendition. It focuses quickly, and with the maximum f2 it is very fast. It is sharp at f2, and image quality seems to improve little if any when stopped down. This is a lens to consider for anyone looking for a fast wide angle DX lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceeds Expectations After searching for many months I finally landed on this lens for its blend of super-wide and very fast capabilities. At 14mm with F2 it lets in an extraordinary amount of light. It is perfect for night shooting. Note that the lens is heavy so if you're a very mobile photographer take that into consideration for the impact on your pack weight. I've only been out once but I am very happy with the performance I saw. Please note re shipping: the UPS packaging arrived damaged but the OEM box and lens were fine. Also the shipping instructions were signature required by UPS left unattended on front porch all day. Be aware when having shipped.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Very Welcome Surprise In the past on my DX bodies I had extensively used The Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 and the Tokina 35mm f/2.8. They had been work horses on my D300, D90, and later D7000's. They, other than huge chromatic aberrations at times in the corners and an aversion to back lighting, produced great images. Then came the D7100/D7200 24 MP sensors. The Tokinas became unusable. I could not believe it, but they could not handle the 24MP sensors. So, I was very skeptical about trying another Tokina. However, the 14-20 mm range and at f/2 enticed me. For me the perfect range to be my wide angle, period. I am not a fan of zooms other than in the wide angle range. Consequently, I rented one from the good people at Lens Rentals. Given B&H's generous return policy, that was probably a wasted hundred or so bucks. But, the results were great, so in April I purchased one from B&H. I can now say that this 14-20mm Tokina is a stand out superb lens at all of its focal lengths. It is very much in a league with my Sigma Art series lenses and works seamlessly with them. This 14-20 Tokina is a really exceptional and superb lens that seems to be flying under everyone's radar. That is a shame. Any one that would like to work in this focal length range should strongly look at this lens. It is built like a tank and I believe that you would be very happy with it if you decide to purchase it. I hate doing reviews, but this product deserves notice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Sharp and light with good light gathering I rented this lens from lensrentals twice before finally pulling the trigger and buying it. So far all I have done is test the new lens to make sure it is centered and sharp. Mine appears at least as good as the two I rented. I am a mountain climber and love taking night photos. This lens on a Nikon D5500 makes a very light combo that competes well with full frame and an F 2.8 Zoom.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Lens In a word, awesome! Used this lens at the Grand Canyon, Antelope Canyon, Zion and Bryce NP. Images are tack sharp. If you're shooting scenics in DX format this lens is a must. As for astrophotgraphy, you can't lose with the wide angle and fast aperture that this lens offers. For me Tokina 14-20mm lens is as near perfect as you can get.
