Canon 50mm f/1.4 overview

  • 1Description

Offering a natural perspective along with a fast maximum aperture, the EF 50mm f/1.4 USM from Canon is a versatile normal-length prime characterized by its bright f/1.4 aperture to suit working in low-light conditions and for producing shallow depth of field imagery. This lens also features a Gaussian optics design, along with two high refractive index elements and one aspherical element, to control spherical aberrations and distortion for high sharpness and clarity. A Super Spectra coating has also been applied to suppress flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color accuracy when working in difficult lighting conditions. Complementing the optical design is a micro USM, which enables quick and quiet autofocus performance along with full-time manual focus control.

Normal prime is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, however can also be used with APS-C models where it provides an 80mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/1.4 maximum aperture suits working in low-light conditions and also affords great control over depth of field for isolating subjects and using selective focus techniques.
Gaussian optics design, which includes one aspherical element and two high refractive index elements, notably reduces distortion and spherical aberrations for high sharpness and accurate rendering.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
A micro Ultrasonic Motor (USM) is employed to deliver fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance as well as full-time manual focus override.
Rounded eight-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing out of focus quality that benefits the use of shallow depth of field and selective focus techniques.

    Canon 50mm f/1.4 reviews

EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Lens is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 3716.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent low light lens I've had my EF 50mm 1.4 lens for many years. My Canon 6D normally carries a 24-105 L series lens. The 50mm is used when I want to lighten my load or shoot photos indoors with natural light. Note that 1.2 and 1.4 lens opened to their widest apertures have a very narrow depth of field which, if focused properly, will provide the target in crisp focus and intentionally blur items in front or being the subject. My lens has been excellent at focusing on it's own and the manual override without throwing a switch is very convenient. Contrast could be a bit better. Highly recommended over the 1.8 50mm which I've also owned.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Refurbs from Canon are not all good I own and rent a lot of Canon lenses. I recently bought the 50mm refurbished from Canon, thinking, if it was from Canon directly, it would have to be in top notch shape. I was sadly disappointment. The copy I received made a loud grinding sound and back-focused so badly that I could not get the 6D body to rectify the misalignment. I sent the lens in for repair (I should have returned it) and they said it was 'impact damage' but repaired it without cost. However, when it was returned it was only slightly better. It still requires a significant correction on the camera body and I now just don't trust it. Be cautious and check your refurb closely. This was a costly mistake for me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cannot live without this lens Bottom line - I cannot be a photographer/videographer/filmmaker without this lens. I have a wide angle and standard zoom lens, but find myself shooting video mostly with this 50mm 1.4 lens on my 7D. First of all, the depth of field achieved with this lens shooting video cannot be be achieved on any camcorder, prosumer or not, without an adapter to achieve this look. The image produced by the lens is beautiful, crisp, and stunning. Everyone who reviews my footage shot on this lens is wowed by the images and videos this glass produces. I highly recommend you have this prime lens in your arsenal if you shoot video (as I do mostly video).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Price/Value Lens Ever I've read a bunch of reviews claiming that lens is not good and all I can say is... baloney. This is the best price/value lens ever. Over the period of last 20 years I've seen lenses that were better (L Series) and much more common - worse than EF 50mm f/1.4. If there ever was one lens (scratch the FD 50mm f/0.95) that I would always have on my camera - this tiny gem would be it. In fact, it is on my camera most of the time, and I shoot a lot of different pictures - landscapes, portraits, street, you name it. Get this lens - it's a must have for any self-respecting photographer, be it a pro or an amateur, whether you have the latest 1Ds or XSi body - and enjoy shooting!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Haven't grown too fond of it just yet I've read all the reviews of the 3 different 50mm canon lenses, so I went with the 1.4 because there wasn't much of a justification for getting the 1.2 to go with its price tag. I have used it for about two weeks now, and I am not sure if I have really grown to LOVE it. It's alright. I think I need to calibrate the lens and see where the focus is falling cause my images are not coming out sharp unless the subject is close up for a face shot. I seem to have better luck getting sharper images with my 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 ... I just hope I didn't make a mistake in getting this lens instead of just forking out the additional $1000+ for the L lens.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love this lens This is a great carry around lens. I have used it for portraits and it is tack sharp and wonderful for floral photography. I took a trip to the southwest when the cactus were blooming and I just used this lens. It is lightweight and was perfect! It is also wonderful for low light situations like street photography at night. A lot of times I will just bring this lens and push myself to shoot creatively. It works! I have had to send it in after 2 years of heavy use, to get the focus fixed from sticking. I would have to manually get it close and then it would pop into focus. Therefore the 4star rating. Now it is back and good as new.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Stick with the 1.8 With all the hype that came with the 50mm 1.4 I thought I would give it a try over my 50mm 1.8. I have shot a lot of portraits (1000's) with the 1.8 and wanted to see what improvements the 1.4 could give. I ordered a brand new 50mm 1.4 and put it to work and work poorly it did. Like many have said here it has a huge focusing problem. Set it up on a tripod and shot 100's of images at different f-stops and distances-all at the very same object that never moved.. Then I checked each image. There was no consistency in the focus. Then I tried the very same tests with my 50mm 1.8 on the same day in the same way and magically all the images were in focus. I own the Canon 5D Mark III. Finally I sent it back.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from EXCELLENT LENS Please stop whining about this lens not being sharp. I noticed this lens having a sweet spot in the middle at lower apertures. If your autofocus is set to focus in the center, the center of the picture will always be sharp. However, if you shoot a portrait, focus on the eyes with center focal point and then shift the camera to frame your shot you might see slight softness on the eyes. Learn to work with your equipment, set your focal points on eyes from the start! This lens is very sharp. You get a lot for the money. Build quality is not the best with front coming out when focusing. Its not perfect but what ever is? Excellent lens.
