HUBSAN H501S overview

  • 1Description

The blinged-out black and gold H501S from Hubsan is an X4-configuration quadcopter with integrated 1080p video camera and included 4.3" FPV transmitter (radio controller). The flight controller has integrated GPS, enabling advanced autonomous features, such as Follow Me and Automatic Return. It is powered by four brushless motors with self-tightening propellers. The bundle comes ready-to-fly, only requiring four AA batteries for the transmitter to get started.

Auto Return Home
Thanks to a GPS-backed navigation system, the H501S is able to remember its "home," or takeoff, point. If connection is lost with the transmitter, Failsafe Mode will engage, causing the quadcopter to automatically return to the home point and land. You can also manually trigger Failsafe Mode via a switch on the transmitter
Follow Me Mode
In this mode, the H501S will lock onto the position of the transmitter and track it. This is extremely beneficial when recording a moving subject that would be tricky to follow manually
Altitude Mode
In this mode, based on readings from a barometer, the H501S will maintain a fixed altitude. Horizontal movement, as well as rotation (yaw), will still be enabled
Headless Mode - Intuitive Orientation
In this mode, there is no longer a defined "nose" and "tail." Instead, the aircraft always moves relative to the pilot – pressing forward moves forward, pressing left moves left, and so on. This keeps flying more intuitive, especially for beginner pilots
FPV Transmitter with 4.3" Screen
On the transmitter, you will find a 4.3 LCD screen that allows you to monitor real-time video from the FPV camera and will display vital flight telemetry data to keep you apprised of what is happening in the air. There is a microSD slot on the transmitter – card not included, allowing you to record the FPV preview. A 5.8 GHz link is used for the video signal, while control operates on 2.4 GHz to avoid cross interference
Brushless Motors
Brushless motors provide better performance than their brushed counterparts. In addition, propeller attachment is self-tightening for additional security

    HUBSAN H501S reviews

H501S X4 FPV Quadcopter with 1080p Camera (Black) is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 69.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Highly capable Quad for the new pilot! This machine is fantastic! Started a year ago with a sub-255 gr quad - and quickly outgrew it. The H501S X4 is a great second step - at a great price point. Rock solid performance - easy to master control system. With GPS hold, hovers are motionless. Has follow me and return to home features. So stable and intuitive, you can forego the headless mode immediately. Decent flight times - 1080p video is a little contrasty in hard light, but grades easily in FCPX. FPV display provides lots of data and good picture - in bright sun though it can be a little hard to read. The weight is over 400 gr., so will require FAA registration ($5.00 - online)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Hubsan H501S First Flights My rating is 4, but could be 5 - Here's why. GPS and RTH worked perfectly. For some reason could not get into headless or follow me. It was rock solid in the sky at all times. Video was near perfect; no jello and crystal clear. Today, flew again and had a couple crashes which was my fault for not using GPS. Important discovery made too late to test is (drum roll) headless and follow me took two presses of the left/right sticks respectively. NOT as the manual/video says to just press them. I accidently? tried two presses to go into those modes. But my battery was weak and I had to land it. At least the screen showed me it was in the modes intended. Next flight they should work and I'll give it a 5.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hubsan 501s Every bit I expected and more. My 72 year-old eyes and hands don't react quick enough for the syma x5c. No problems with the 501, simply flip GPS switch and she will hover at the precise spot and altitude while you figure out the move you need to make. I'm learning to fly fpv to make up for poor eye sight. One thing tho, if you are not expert, be sure to set the transmitter to 60%, factory default is 100%.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good not Great! The quadcopter came well packaged and was easy to assemble. Unfortunately it was missing one of the rubber feet under one of the propeller assembly's. I emailed the manufacturer and it's been 2 weeks with no response. I did not return it because it flys well. Out of the box, the instructions were vague and took a lot of fiddling and doing things not instructed to get the copter to function. Once in flight it responds well with excellent control. Photos are acceptable for the price. Video is clear but a little jittery. This is a great learning tool if your want to get into higher quality drones. There is a learning curve and it's better not to crash a more expensive drone. For the price the drones action and response is very good but don't expect smooth video. Except for the poor customer service for a minor issue my experience was positive.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Buy Purchased for a work related project. First time user so it took some time to get used to the controls. After a couple trail runs and some blade replacements (conveniently included) we finally got comfortable with flying it. Please don't expect to record right out of the box if this is your first time. Take the time to fully learn the controls first.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from First drone=5 stars This is my first drone, and I am in love. I love how easy this is to fly. I love that it has GPS built in to return to take off position. The fact I can see on the transmitter a birds eye view of what the camera sees is just amazing! The batteries last about 20 minutes which is ample enough. I bought an extra battery for the copter and use rechargeable AA in the transmitter so it works out quite well! It doesn't take long to get the hang of this if you are even mildly coordinated. I did put reflective stickers on mine to allow me to see it in the air more easily since it is black and when there is a bit of distance between you and the copter it is hard to see. I am enjoying this! The camera is average but the video is great!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Quad for the Money I bought the H501S because I wanted a nice quad to fly around the backyard. I wanted a quad that was more stable than my blade glimpse and had some level of flight control like a Yuneec Q500. Getting aerial images was not my priority. The unit does everything as advertised and does most of it very well. Specifically, the altitude hold (without GPS) works great, GPS hold, follow me work very well too. The return to home function is a little unpredictable, but that is not a major issue to me. Handling is very good with this drone. Probably the best part for me with this unit is the fly time - it easily hits 20 minutes on one charge. There are some oddities as well. Sometimes the motors do not start upon initiation from the controller, or immediately turn off upon landing. In those cases you have to repeatedly send the on or off commands until the unit responds. All in all I am amazed at how well everything works given the price point. Get a couple extra batteries for the quad and some rechargeable batteries for the transmitter. Get some extra rubber feet if you can find them - mine fell off within the first 10 flights. Experience: Blade Glimpse, Yuneec Q500

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Serious disappointment I saw in other reviews about out of control fly aways, but was hoping for the best. Of the handful of times I put this up, it has taken off out of control, not responsive to the controller, half the time. Didn't matter if I was or wasn't trying to work the sticks. Fortunately always crashed to the ground without damage to anything other than props. Spec-wise this is what I wanted for my 2nd level trainer before getting a DJI Phantom, but it looks like I will have to train on my real drone instead. I would not recommend anyone taking a chance on this product.
