Manfrotto XPRO 3-Way, Geared Pan-and-Tilt Head with 200PL-14 Quick Release Plate

This XPRO 3-Way, Geared Pan-and-Tilt Head from Manfrotto has a load capacity of 8.8 lb and can be attached to tripods or other support systems that feature a 3/8"-16 mount. It includes an integrated RC2 quick release cam lock and a 200PL-14 Quick Release Plate. RC2 compatible quick release plates such as the 200PL-14 can be removed from the head by pulling the cam lock's spring-loaded lever, which also allows the plate to be quickly reattached. The cam lock also features a safety catch to prevent the 200PL-14, or another compatible quick release plate from accidentally disconnecting.

Cameras, sport optics, or camcorders that are compatible with a 1/4"-20 mount can be connected to the quick release plate before securing it to the pan-and-tilt head. The head can be rotated 360°, tilted 90° forwards or 20° backwards, as well as 90° sideways for portrait orientation. Each of these three movements function independently of each other and have individual, spring-clamp controls. Squeezing each clamp's two handles allows the corresponding movement to be rapidly adjusted, and once the handles are released, the adjustment is locked into place. One handle on each clamp is also an integrated twist knob that allows incremental, geared adjustments, which help to ensure that any device mounted to this XPRO 3-Way, Geared Pan-and-Tilt Head is precisely positioned relative to the subject.

To further promote fast and repeatable device positioning, this XPRO 3-Way, Geared Pan-and-Tilt Head also includes dedicated angle scales for each movement that are designed for easy visibility.

Manfrotto XPRO Geared Head with 200PL-14 Plat... Reviews

Really solid and clever pan and tilt head

While I have only just received this, it has already replaced several earlier Manfrotto tripod heads I have used for a number of years. I particularly like the way I can quick release each axis or using the gearing controls make minor adjustments to each of them as well. As a landscape photographer control of each axis is very important when working on a tripod. I think Manfrotto has got it right on with this version. For me, this is just right.

I purchased the unit for use with my new Dwarf III astrophography camera. The tripod is light but strong and is very flexible in is leg position options. I've coupled this with the Manfrotto MT190CXPRO3 Carbon Fiber Tripod and are an excellent combination.

question

I see the body is plastic to reduce weight. However, are the gears made of metal? I'm just afraid that if the gears are also plastic that they will wear quickly and lose precision.

Just don't put anything super heavy on it. It should be fine with a camera and lens, even a heaver lens. If you start putting flash heads and flash brackets on it, it won't last.

New to photography & torn between this head & MAMHXPRO3W to use it for product/flat lay photos. Which one shall I get?
Asked by: Irina
Thank you but if my camera is rather light then the geared head would not be a bad choice after all? I’m not planning to own any heavy camera since photography will only be my hobby, not a source of income

Could this be used with the befree tripods? Or is this head's base diameter oversized for those?
Asked by: Dan
The Manfrotto XPRO 3-Way, Geared Pan-and-Tilt Head with 200PL-14 Quick Release Plate can be used with a Befree tripod. The base diameter of the head is 60mm, while the base diameter of the Manfrotto Befree GT PRO Carbon Fiber Travel Tripod is 44mm. So the head will overhang slightly on the tripod, but it will still work. The BeFree tripod has a function where the legs turn backwards towards the head in order to become very small, so you can easily carry it in a bag. If you use this XPRO 3-Way head you won't be able to place the legs right by the head, to be a very small package. Since you will probably not invert the legs around the head, when using the XPRO 3 way head, then the tripod will be slightly larger when carrying it in a bag, but it will still be a good option.

question

I've seen some reviews on this head from some unhappy customers. How is the play and gears on this head? I typically shoot with a pan/tilt or ball head but lately I've been shooting much more product and design/architectural assignments. I like the reviews on the 410 Jr but I want to stick with the RC2/PL220 releases.

Thanks all! I did purchase this head. It just arrived but initially I am pleased with the build quality and precise adjustments. Thanks again for the input!

question

How do I get the head off my tripod or tripod extension? I cannot figure this stupid question. What the heck am I doing wrong?
Asked by: dean
Look UNDERNEATH the tripod center column mounting plate and you’ll typically see 2 or 3 small inset steel set screws. Use a medium-small flat head screwdriver to loosen these FIRST. You typically don’t need to remove them entirely, but you need to loosen them until they are nearly out of the plate in order to unlock the head from the column. Once these set screws are loose, you can easily screw off the original head by hand. Reverse the process to mount and lock a new head to the center column.
