Kirk G1 overview

  • 1Description

Designed utilizing customer feedback and recommendations, the G1 Gimbal Head from Kirk Enterprises has been engineered to deliver a user friendly experience paired with professional performance. With a maximum load capacity of 80 lb, the G1's design allows the user to properly balance almost any camera and telephoto lens combination atop a stable tripod, allowing the camera to move without weight-induced resistance. This allows the user to pan and tilt quickly while tracking fast moving subjects like athletes, vehicles, or wildlife. With a weight of just 4 lb, the G1 is an easy addition to any lightweight tripod set-up and a max height of 9.8" makes it easy to store while fully assembled.

The G1's innovative design includes tension control on both the pan and tilt axis allowing the user to adjust the speed of the head's movement to their preference. Also, a handy push-button pan lock allows the head to be removed easily from the tripod without the panning base accidentally spinning. Keeping with long-lens plate standards, the G1 uses an Arca-type compatible quick release, ensuring wide compatibility with most long-lens Arca plates and Arca-type lens feet. Additionally, the addition of large captive knobs allows the controls to remain easily accessible with bare hands or when wearing padded gloves. A custom neoprene storage bag is included with the G1 for transport and protection.

    Kirk G1 reviews

G1 Gimbal Head is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Gimbal Head ! This contraption is more than I ever expected. It moves like butter and has the controls to suit anyone's need for speed through tensioning. It will handle your heaviest lenses smoothly and efficiently. I do not have a Wimberley or RRS Gimbal head to do a side by side comparison but I have OCD when it comes to researching a piece of equipment before purchase. As you can see, it is similar to the RRS and is a much better price and although it is slightly more expensive than the Wimberley, you do not have to purchase anything else to use it as a side mount. This, in my mind, makes it the better value. With it's ability to move the center of gravity by way of the vertical upright, you could offset any possible weight or angle issue encountered. Couple all of this with the beautiful fit and finish and a 10 year warranty and I, for one, expect years of use ahead of me.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exceeds expectations, I would recommend without reserve. Excellent, well made piece of solid feeling metal. I think it will last my life time, and my childrens. I needed a gimbal that is adjustable, to accommodate my 600/f4 and 400/2.8, as well as several smaller zooms. I am particularly impressed by the multiple adjustments, that are infinitely adjustable, as well as the tension adjusters. The final kicker for me is the blue button, locking the swivel so that I can seriously tighten the attachment, and know it will not come loose with use. The price is more than competitive with RRS, Jobu and Wimberley, all of which i considered. The only minor quibble I have is that it would be nice to have some marking scales on the adjustment slides. However, I have made my own with white-out pen.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Precision-Manufactured Gimbal Head I have quite a number of Kirk Photo products and have enjoyed their quality and durability for several years. As accustomed as I am to this level of quality, though, I was truly amazed at the precision machining, robustness, and well-thought-out design of this G1 gimbal head as soon as I removed it from the packaging. I am sure that it will meet and exceed my needs for this type of tripod head for many years to come. Great value -- well worth the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid, smooth operating and refined control... ...pretty much the perfect gimbal/long lens solution. The unit works perfectly — milled to perfection... solid and smooth with my Sony A7r2/100-400 set up. Literally a well oiled machine! The separate tension and lock knobs (easily distinguishable by the different colors/size) are a great concept, and the side mount configuration option is a bonus. A bit of $ but well worth it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It is everything that you expect and more Well engineered, beautiful piece of gear. I use it with a Tamron 150-600 and a Canon 5D MK IV with a battery pack, it is rock steady. I am planning on adding a 2X converter and I am sure it will do fine. It was a toss up between another reputed comparable brand (slightly cheaper) and the Kirk but I went with the Kirk given that you do not need a separate piece to make this into a portrait mount (the other brand does). It is absolutely every penny I paid. The only downside is, it is heavy but you need the heft for the stability.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE IT ! This Gimbal Head just is a joy to use. IT's so easy to manipulate my camera while taking pictures. You can move your camera up and down and sideways in any direction. The employee who helped me when I explained what I needed had so much patience with me...and the Gimbal Head was exactly what I wanted. Thank you B & H for your wonderful help!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Feels like a Lifetime Product. I purchased this Kirk G1 Gimbal Head to use with my Nikon System with either D800 or D500 bodies with and without Battery Grips, and a 500mm P f/4.0 IF-ED Manual Focus lens I have had since 1989 and with either TC-14E, TC-20E, or TC-301. I am also using the Kirk G1 with a Nikkor AF-S 200-500mm f/5.6E ED VR lens with and without the TC-14E or TC-20E. The most pressing use for these lens/body combinations will be the August 21, 2017 Solar Eclipse, and for that application I found for the location along the Path of Totality I have selected, and with either body I cannot tilt the G1 Head to a high enough elevation angle without removing the Battery Grips and using the G1 with the Silver Pan Friction under the Camera. The larger diameter of the Pan Locking Knob interferes with the Bodies. I need a 60 degree elevation tilt for the Wyoming Location I have picked. Kirk has been extremely helpful in allowing me to return the Base section of the G1 to them to swap the Black Pan Locking Knob for a Silver Pan Friction Knob since it has a smaller diameter. The Knobs are not owner swappable, and they have promised a quick turn around. The Kirk G1 is so much more Big Lens Friendly than the Foba Superball I have been using with the 500mm since it was new. The Kirk G1 allows very quick position changes and smooth movements as well as very quick re-balancing of the the camera/lens/tc combo as when the length and balance point changes. I spent a lot of time evaluating the designs and reputations and prices of Gimbal Heads and the Kirk looks like the best choice for my applications of Nature and Wildlife Photography. Now that I have had the G1 for a few weeks and taken more than 1,000 images with it support my lenses and cameras, I am confident I made the right choice. The quality is extremely high and the construction is very robust. I wish all tripod heads came with the 4 position Lock for tightening and removing the tripod heads from the tripod and leveling base.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Gimbal Head IF............... The Kirk G1 is a superb gimbal head. It's quality, coating, strength, materials, are all top notch. It includes all the normal gimbal functions/movements but also includes: 1: The positioning of the vertical bar to get the center of gravity of your setup over the center of the tripod. 2: Adjustments for controlling the rotative movement of the gimbal in the horizontal plane that connects to the tripod head. Setup is quite simple and once you realize what it is you are trying to adjust and why it is a no brainer. Like all quality gimbal heads once properly adjusted the Kirk G1 allows the camera/lens to stay in any position that you set it. It moves effortlessly and in all directions. Drag adjustments are user controlled in fine increments and if a set position is desired you have separate locking knobs to lock in to a particular position. The vertical rotating bar that holds the camera assembly can be taken off and the lens locked in to the upper rotating piece. This lightens up the entire mechanism and I'm not seeing any advantage to either setup so why not get rid of this extra weight? Maybe someone can answer this with a reply. The other top-of-the-line gimbal has the same capability/flexibility. The only difference I see is you are supporting the camera/lens on the bottom as compared to on the side mounting. The reason for the "IF" is like all gimbals they are BIG and the Kirk G1 is no different. Therefore, you should be certain that you have the need for this function before adding the extra weight to your tripod/camera/lens setup. For fast moving photos there is no question a gimbal is required. Using the G1 is a dream in these situations. However, I would not want to carry this around in photo shoots where a normal ball head would suffice even if it were a little bit awkward to use for some photos. The Kirk G1 is a quality gimbal head and I highly recommend it. Just be certain you need a gimbal head of any brand. Negatives: A couple. First like all gimbals this head is expensive. Second is that the G1 comes with a carrying sack. I would prefer a plastic carrying case that I could lay the G1 into. When assembled the G1 is a tad too big for the carrying sack. Fit would be better when disassembled but I wouldn't want parts floating around and hitting each other in a sack. A case solutions all of these issues.
