Mixing a short telephoto field of view with perspective- and depth of field control, the TS-E 90mm f/2.8 from Canon is a tilt-shift lens well-suited to producing well-corrected imagery with a slightly compressed perspective. Up to +/- 8° of tilt is possible, for focus control, and +/- 11mm of shift, to adjust perspective and composition. The tilt-shift mechanism can be rotated +/- 90° for applying movements in any direction, and a tilt-locking mechanism can be used while shooting for greater stability. The lens also employs a Gaussian-type optical design to maintain image quality throughout the aperture range and a Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual element to reduce flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color accuracy.

Canon TS-E 90mm f/2.8 Overview

Perspective control, tilt-shift lens affords +/- 11mm of shift and +/- 8° of tilt, and both types of movements can be applied independently, and parallel or perpendicular to one another. Additionally, the tilt and shift functions can be rotated +/- 90° for applying the movements in distinct directions.
Tilt-locking mechanism ensures the lens stays in place while shooting.
Super Spectra coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize ghosting and flare for greater contrast and color neutrality when working in strong lighting conditions.
Gaussian-type optical system affords a high degree of clarity throughout the aperture range and, when paired with the rounded 8-blade diaphragm, contributes to a smooth bokeh quality.
Minimum focusing distance of 1.6' and a maximum magnification of 1:3.4 makes this lens suitable for working with close-up subjects.

Which Canon extension tube is compatible with this lens?
Asked by: Richard
According to Canon, both tubes will work with the 90mm TSE. You will of course have a limited focus distance. The lens manual lists the working distance for both tubes. You can view the manual here; https://www.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/524712.pdf

question

What is the best lens for product photography?
Asked by: Sandy T.
This is a superb lens for product photography. I am a professional product photographer. I have used many lenses, and still do for certain things, but this my go-to lens for nearly everything. It is extremely sharp, and the tilt-shift feature is essential for placing the plane of focus right where you need it. With an extension tube it becomes a great TS macro lens, too. I give it five stars!

question

Is it possible to order this lens so that the shift and tilt mechanisms are parallel, rather than perpendicular, to one another? I understand that this modification normally requires sending it to a Canon service center after initial purchase, which seems needlessly complicated (unless one is willing to undergo the risk of doing it yourself).

Any competent camera repair shop should be able to do this for a very nominal charge. If you search the Internet, there are more than a few photographers that have done this themselves, BUT you have to be the skill set to handle precision devices AND the correct tools. The only tool you need is a screwdriver but, like anyone dealing with small precision screws, you need exactly the correct size screwdriver that exactly fits the screw head.. Search for Northlight Images Modifying your tilt and shift lens for a well illustrated example of what is involved.
