Leica X-U (Typ 113) Overview

  • 1Description

Pairing a robust physical design with refined image quality, the X-U (Typ 113) Digital Camera is Leica's entrance into the world of tough, durable camera designs. Still adhering to Leica's preference for classic and intuitive operation, this camera features a prime Summilux 23mm f/1.7 ASPH. lens that offers an equivalent focal length of 35mm, along with a bright f/1.7 maximum aperture for working in difficult lighting conditions. This sophisticated lens pairs with a large 16.2MP APS-C CMOS sensor, which affords a broad sensitivity range to ISO 12500, along with up to 5 fps continuous shooting and Full HD 1080p video recording. Enabling use of these imaging components in less than ideal conditions, the X-U (Typ 113) distinguishes itself from other Leica compatriots by its anti-slip rubber exterior and waterproof, shockproof, and dustproof design for working in harsh and underwater environments.

Rugged Design
The X-U (Typ 113) features a tough, rugged construction that is designed to withstand harsh climates and underwater shooting:
  • Waterproof to depths of 49' / 15m for up to 60 minutes of shooting (IP68-compliant)
  • Shockproof to falls from 4' / 1.2m high (MIL-STD 810G, method 516.52-compliant)
  • Dustproof to protect the internal components of the camera
  • Anti-slip rubber exterior for improved grip in wet conditions
  • Integrated UW protective glass filter guards the front element.
16.2MP APS-C CMOS Sensor
While robust in its physical design, the X-U is equally apt with its imaging capabilities due to the inclusion of a large 16.2MP APS-C CMOS image sensor. This sensor avails a sensitivity range from ISO 100-12500 to suit working in a wide array of lighting conditions, and also supports up to 5 fps continuous shooting for up to 7 frames in DNG + JPEG mode and Full HD 1080p video recording at 30 fps. Additionally, a dedicated Underwater shooting mode can be used to compensate for unwanted color shifts when photographing in water.
Summilux 23mm f/1.7 ASPH. Lens
Offering a 35mm equivalent focal length, the built-in Summilux 23mm f/1.7 ASPH. lens features a sophisticated optical design comprised of 10 elements in eight groups, including two aspherical elements. This design strives to reduce spherical aberrations and distortions for greater sharpness and clarity, and also reduces the overall size and weight of the lens. The bright f/1.7 maximum aperture also contributes to enhanced performance in low-light conditions and, when combined with a dedicated manual focus ring, allows for greater control over depth of field when using selective focus techniques.
Other Camera Features
  • The durable body design incorporates a large 3.0" 920k-dot LCD screen for live view shooting and bright image playback.
  • Manual shutter speed and aperture control dials are accessible on the top plate of the camera for intuitive exposure adjustment.
  • A built-in flash is placed above the lens on the front of the camera body to provide additional illumination when working in difficult lighting conditions.
  • An 11-point autofocus system can make use of spot and face detection focusing modes for precision when photographing moving subjects.
  • In-camera film modes simulate a traditional filmic aesthetic, and include Standard, Dynamic, Natural, B&W Natural, and B&W High Contrast settings.

    Leica X-U (Typ 113) Reviews

X-U (Typ 113) Digital Camera is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Boy is this camera fun. This is the rugged, don't care if it gets sand or water on it fun camera that takes spectacular and beautiful photos, crazy indulgence that if you live anywhere near the water you should get. I LOVE it! What a fun and beautifully made treasure. I would suggest B&H's warranty program, as I had this camera before and two versions ended up having problems (probably due to salt and the 51F degree San Francisco Bay). But if you get the warranty, you can use it without worry as B&H stands by their products and will exchange without a problem. Life is short, this camera is super fun! Seriously I just put it on automatic and walk around. Gorgeous photos are the result.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent camera for active travel I bought this camera to take on a recent trip to Italy because I wanted a durable camera that was going to be simple to use but yield high quality images. The trip included rock and ice climbing in the Alps, as well as more genteel adventures around Lake Como. This is my first Leica, and the feel and intuitive operation of the camera are superb. The X-U was easy to learn and to use and I liked its solid feel, and I found that I could navigate the menus quickly and operate the controls even while wearing gloves. I used the exposure bracketing functions for some nice sunset shots of a glacier and mountain peaks, and stitched together some panos that came out very well. The fill-flash worked very well for portraits against bright backgrounds. On the other hand, I missed some opportunities for good shots because the auto-focus was slow and/or imprecise. Reviewing my images each evening, I found a number where the focus was just too soft, despite being sure I remembered received a focus confirmation while operating the camera. The flaws in the auto-focus were the only annoying thing about the camera. That said, I'm very pleased with the X-U, and I'm looking forward to using it for other active trips. It's a pleasure to carry a quality camera and not worry about banging it around a little or be concerned when it gets wet. I captured some good shots that I certainly would have missed if the camera had been in a protective case instead of hanging around my neck.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Leica colors are amazing If you are looking for a tough take anywhere camera this is it. It is not a small compact camera by any means but when packing it in your luggage you can literally throw it anywhere and not worry. It is really a reworked Leica X. Great images and great colors. I have the Leica X-E as well and this lens is a little sharper and brighter than the one on the X-E. Simple menu system. Nice easy controls. You might think it is overpriced for what you are getting but really if you are buying Leica price is a secondary consideration plus reality is there is not a camera like it anywhere so maybe it is not overpriced when you think like that. All in all if you are looking for a rugged tough take anywhere camera and don't mind the Leica quirks then this is a great camera. No wifi so I had to buy a wifi card which is no big deal as those cards work well. I have one for my X-E and it works perfectly.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I really enjoyed using this camera during my vacation This camera is definitely bigger than your usual 'tough' or 'rugged' camera. But the picture quality with the larger sensor compared to those other smaller rugged cameras is amazing!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Some patience required My other point and shoot is a Sony RX1R, so i'll use that for comparison purposes. The Sony has a bigger sensor, faster auto focus, and does less thinking then the Leica does especially in low light or high contrast situations. However the Leica can Capture nice images despite these limitations. The weatherization of the body is really reassuring, which I think will make it a nice all-weather travel camera. Perhaps Sony will develop a high-end weatherized point and shoot...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect rough camera Touch, impervious, great lebs and image quality. Other “action” cameras have poor lenses and sensors. This is really the only choice for serious photographers who want a camera that can take knocks, drops, water and dirt. Autofocus is slow but certainly usable. Menu and controls a little eccentric, but once you get used to it, it is perfect.

    question

    Where is it manufactured?
    Asked by: edward w.
Possibly where panasonic electrical goods and cameras are made I,don't think they are all put together in Germany .the saddest thing about new leicas is you can't get a certain answer if the camera is made in Germany and if it's actually a Leica and not a panasonic ,research the camera before buying it because Fujifilm has a much better option.just friendly advice ,I love Leica but not when it's a red sticker that's only Leica .film leicas are the only certain leicas and Leica lenses ,I'm not to sure about plastic leicas that aren't really leicas.sad but true.

    question

I was wondering about the style of photography that you can take with the Leica X-U camera as compared to the Leica Q camera as far as taking photos of street photography or landscapes or micro photography. I kinda like the Leica X-U camera for its design and it's ruggedness and being able to use it in any kind of weather. What I'm asking is will I for the most part be able to take similar photos with the Leica X-U camera as compared to the Leica Q camera. I know that the Leica Q camera is $1,000 more than the Leica X-U camera and I'm trying to make up my mind on which camera to buy. I hope that somebody's got answer for me. Thank You!
    Asked by: peter cologgi
The decision comes down to selecting the best camera for the job. What is the job then? Are you wanting a superb, stripped down camera for everyday candid, landscape or macro photography? Then the Q would be a very good choice. Or will you be doing all the above but will be in more physical environments such as hiking, camping, kayaking, sail boating, swimming, snorkeling, or being out with children? Then the X-U will give you great images yet will survive knocks, drops, and the water.

    question

I was wondering and this may seem like a crazy question but I wanted to know if the Leica Q camera in Snow (white) is that model camera designed for women. the reason that I asked is because in the pictures for that Leica Q camera there's a picture of a woman and I was just wondering about if that camera is for women or not. I kinda like that camera and I just had to ask about it. I hope that somebody's got answer for me. Thank You!
    Asked by: peter cologgi
The Leica Q (Typ 116) Digital Camera (Snow) was created in a limited edition of 300 units to commemorates the 2018 international winter sporting events. It was designed by the 2014 male snowboarding gold medalist, Iouri Podladtchikov. So if anyone can find this camera, they will enjoy this special souvenir.
