Voigtlander 15mm f/4.5 overview

  • 1Description

Affording an expansive field of view, the Super Wide-Heliar 15mm f/4.5 Aspherical III Lens from Voigtlander is dedicated to full-frame Sony E-mount cameras, and features an updated Heliar design to limit distortion and maintain consistent illumination to suit mirrorless camera designs. One aspherical element is also used in the 11 elements, 9 groups design, and helps to reduce spherical aberrations throughout the aperture range. The manual focus design affords fine-tuned control over focus placement, along with a minimum focusing distance of 11.8", and a Selective Aperture Control System allows you to de-click the manual aperture ring for smooth, silent exposure adjustment to benefit filmmaking applications.

Incredibly wide 15mm focal length lens is designed for full-frame Sony E-mount mirrorless cameras and provides a 110° angle of view. It is also compatible with APS-C models where it will produce a 22.5mm equivalent focal length.
Updated Heliar optical design helps to maintain consistent peripheral illumination, eliminate color fringing, and reduce distortion; making it ideal for use with mirrorless digital cameras.
One aspherical element is featured in the optical design to control spherical aberrations and improve clarity, sharpness, and resolution.
Manual focus design permits smooth, refined control along with a minimum focusing distance of 11.8".
Selective Aperture Control System produces a stepless, de-clicked aperture ring, which provides silent and smooth exposure adjustment that is well-suited for video application. The aperture ring can also be configured to utilize traditional 1/3-stop clicks for more intuitive tactile control over exposure settings.
Ten-blade diaphragm contributes to a smooth quality of bokeh.
Built-in lens hood guards the front lens element and also helps to control lens flare and ghosting.
Contacts transfer all Exif data between the camera and lens in order to permit full use of camera functions, including focus magnification, image stabilization, and lens corrections.

    Voigtlander 15mm f/4.5 reviews

Super Wide-Heliar 15mm f/4.5 Aspherical III Lens for Sony E is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 23.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A pleasure to use I've been very impressed with this lens since I took it out of its packaging. The entire exterior being metal and all the markings being engraved and painted gives it a premium feel. The focus and aperture rings turn with just the right amount of resistance. It's lovely to use. The results are great too. Yes it's slow (a trade-off I'm happy to make for the small size) and not as resistant to flare as a Zeiss (though it doesn't have a Loxia-like price tag either) but it's sharp and distortion free. It does vignette a little but that's easily fixed in post. Bottom line: If you want a compact and high performing rectilinear ultra-wide angle prime then this may the one for you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Lens I am using this on an a6000. Corner sharpness is good, though I can't vouch for the performance on a full frame camera. The sharpness is almost identical to what I get from the Sony 10-18mm, which is a pretty sharp lens in my opinion. I am using this lens because it is one of the few native e-mount lenses (not requiring an adapter) for the a6000 with true manual focus. I despise the fly by wire focusing in most e-mount lenses, and find the true mechanical focusing a dream. The build quality is astounding, and feels wonderful in the hand. I love having the aperture ring on the lens barrel, and I love the manual focusing. It's a great lens.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Corner sharpness not as good as VM version Overall this is a great little lens. It's a perfect match for the a7 series cameras and I hope voigtlander continue to release more E-mount lenses. My issue with this lens, is that the corners are not sharp at all. No matter what the aperture they never get sharp. I have already exchanged the lens once and both copies I tried had the same problem. Furthermore, when compared to the VM 15mm III the E-mount lens performs much worse in the corners than the adapted VM lens. You would think that Voigtlander would improve their lens not make it worse. If corner sharpness bothers you, don't buy this lens. If you are okay with the bad corners, this is still a great lens in all other aspects.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I love this lens! I have the Rokinon 14mm f2.8 which is a great lens that has horrible distortion if you do architectural work as I do. The Voigtlander has virtually no distortion and the vignetting is easily controlled in post. The lens is extremely sharp at all apertures with the exception of the far corners in certain situations,I know that and plan accordingly. It is also almost flair proof with a beautiful star burst even wide open. Color and micro detail are also amazing. I love manual focus lens on the a7rII, and this super wide is a dream to use. I love, love, love this lens!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for taking natural look interior picture for realtor I have Leica 21mm m-mount, Minolta 20mm, Sony 10-18mm on Sony A7Rii. At widest, they all have a bit of fish-eye look. The 15mm Voigtlander is wide at 110 degree but picture feel like a 28mm, But you have to try a few sample to get a lens that is sharp in corner. Mine is bright and sharp corner to corner. Picture show a living room of a 550sf apartment. It looks spacious bot not have fisheye look.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Ultra Wide, Sharp, Built link a tank. Despide being 15mm, super wide angle, lines are as straight as can get, with virtually no barrel distortion. Lightweight, and looks like it was made for the Sony A7 series cameras. Incredibly sharp. Manual focus is a breeze since turning the focus ring automatically brings up focus assist magnification on the Sony. Best wide-angle I've ever owned. Great value!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Corner sharpness is disappointed until F8 Center is very sharp, but corner is another story. If you take outdoor day light or using tripod, it's OK. otherwise it is not a keeper. I have returned mine. Save up and get the Batis.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent build quality and good glass I love this lens! The build quality is excellent - all metal construction with smooth but deliberate movement of the focus ring and solid clicks of the aperture ring (it can also be set to smooth, click-less mode). I bought a Samyang 16mm f2 but returned it after two days - replacing it with the Voightlander! Best choice I could have made - excellent color rendition and crisp images. Slight distortion around edges but for the price - that is minimal. The relatively slow f4.5 is not really an issue as the lens will normally be used for landscape and architectural photography, where wide open shots are not needed. Very happy with this lens.
