JBL MPATCH2 Overview

• 1Description

The JBL M-Patch 2 is a passive stereo controller and switch box that is well suited for audio engineers, mastering studios, broadcast applications, project studios, and more. The M-Patch 2 offers passive volume attenuation of up to two line-level sources and can direct the output between two sets of XLR outputs. The main inputs feature combo XLR-1/4" connectors, while an auxiliary input provides stereo RCA and an 1/8" TRS connection for media players and other line-level devices.

The front panel offers volume controls for the aux and stereo input, as well as a headphone output. There are buttons for routing signals which include a stereo/aux input select, output 1 and 2 select, mute on/off, and a switch for mono/stereo for checking your mixes in mono. The JBL M-Patch 2 ships with a power adapter, but this is only needed to power the headphone amplifier. The passive signal path between the main and aux inputs does not require power to operate. The M-Patch 2 also ships with desktop/rackmount hardware for easy mounting to a desk or within a 19" rack case.

JBL MPATCH2 Reviews

M-Patch 2 Passive Stereo Controller and Switch Box is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 7.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from out of balance stereo field Initially I thought this was a pretty good value, but after using it for a while the stereo field is louder in the left speaker. This is especially true if the overall level is turned down, but will also spike hard to the left when changing the overall volume. A temporary fix is to lower the signal from my computer feeding into the unit and raise the output volume at the unit. FWIW, the stereo field IS balanced when monitoring with the headphone jack, so I presume they used a cheap potentiometer for the master volume knob. So, although this box is convenient and fairly cheap, I recommend finding something better if you need accurate stereo field presentation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I will be buying again using at a dance studio Got this for a dance studio and it works great. We wanted to upgrade our dying home theater sound system. We ended up comparing live sound and studio monitors, for our smaller studio we decided to go with the JBL 3 series speakers which are self powered but play very well. We got the M-Patch 2 to route the signal to the speakers. We use the main input to hook to laptops/ipads/phones/... or other hardwired devices. We hooked a Bluetooth interface to the aux input for our teachers wanting to run free using bluetooth with a phone or ipod type device. With separate volume controls can set each to appropriate levels and if a teacher needs to bounce back and forth they can. Excellent product and with 2 stereo outs can in phases expand the system to give a surround sound feel of our mainly stereo music or add more subwoofers. They did have to special order it so you may need to give a week or two for delivery.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from convenient, but mediocre headphone amp I needed a way to switch between monitors and headphones, and this went on sale for a great price. The build quality feels very good and has all the routing options I need. I do notice the stereo field balance changes as I adjust the volume, but mostly at low volumes. The only real disappointment is that the headphone audio is mediocre. For the price I cant expect it to compare to my Sound Devices gear, but I do wish it was better. For the low sale price and convenience, I cant really complain.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great volume control for powered monitors Use this for volume control for 5" JBL powered monitors. Solid build quality. Would have preferred 1/4" outputs in addition to the XLR outputs. Also would have liked another 1/8" input jack. I just use this to listen to two pcs. So far I don't use the power jack. Only need power if you want the LEDs lit or if you need the headphone jack preamp. Love the quality. No noise introduced by the box. I did have a buzz but turned out to be a cheap 1/8" to RCA cable. Nice and clean sound wise.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Clean sound easy to use. Bought this with the Denon powered speakers & I'm getting the cleanest sound EVER from my A/V editing computer. I'm using an older M-Audio Audiophile 24/96 PCI sound card & I'm getting tight bass & accurate treble without adding EQ. VERY NICE!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nicely Built Sturdy and well built. Have not had a chance to use in a high volume setting yet, but at low volumes I have not noticed any additional noise.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great box I love this product. It makes it easy for me to bounce between sources when editing and playing back material for clients.

Yes, but you only need it for the headphone amplifier. The box is passive and functions without it.

When using both outputs is there a gain loss? If so, what is the drop?
Asked by: Peter

Would this be suitable for operating 1-2 mics and outputting to two loudspeakers? Im deciding between this and a small mixer such as the Yamaha MG06X... also, does this have preamps on the mic inputs?
Asked by: Anonymous
No. This is a PASSIVE controller for monitor control and switching. There are NO preamps onboard.

Can you put out to both outputs simultaneously as well as the headphone TRL
Asked by: JoeJoe
My guess would be yes. I can confirm that Output #1 and the headphone output will work simultaneously. The Output #2 LED will turn on (simultaneously with the Output #1 LED), so it would seem that both Output 1 and 2 work simultaneously. Sorry I can't test this...but B&H has a great return policy.
