Canon WFT-E8A Overview

The WFT-E8A Wireless File Transmitter from Canon makes it simple and easy to set up wireless transfers with the EOS-1D X Mark II DSLR camera and the cinema EOS C300 Mark II Camcorder Body. The transmitter supports IEEE 802.11a/b/g/n/ac for fast and secure connections over a LAN network using both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz signals.

The WFT-E8A allows the user to transfer images using FTP transfer, EOS Utility, WFT Server, or the Canon Camera Connect app, which also provides remote shooting capabilities. The built-in Wireless Time Syncing function can receive images captured on multiple cameras and automatically sequence them chronologically. Lastly, all these functions are housed in a compact, lightweight body that has been sealed for dust and water resistance.

Canon 1DX Mark II - Game changer

My oh my! Wow oh wow! I use my iPhone 6s Plus with Camera Connect by Canon and this transmitter takes shooting to a whole new level! Setting up was so fast. I got it set up under 30 seconds through the ‘easy set-up’ on the app. The live view is truly live and moves smoothly through the phone. Setting up ISO, SS, and Aperture is so much easier and fast through the phone and you can see much more detail and get different perspectives on what your shot will look like. Now let’s get to the transfer. It does what it’s made to do at such lighting speed I became excited owning this camera all over again. It transmits raws and mp4 videos within seconds into your phone and if you like editing on your phone, you get the full quality straight away without having to transfer to your computer and into your phone. This changed everything to me. Remote shooting opens up a whole new level of freedom with this camera.

I shoot a lot of sporting events and my clients want images in real time for social media.....is this the answer....or would the Camranger 2 be better

It's pricey, and the transfer rates could have been higher (~10MB/s on an existing 802.11ac network, and ~7-8MB/s when configured as an access point and have a phone or laptop connected to it that way) - it is mind boggling that Canon did not use an MIMO chipset/antenna at this price point, when this was released in early 2016 2x2 MIMO configurations were common on mid-range to high-end mobile phones. By the way, the upcoming WFT-E9A for 1Dx III support 2x2 spatial streams. That said, NO third-party device beats this in terms of tight integration with 1Dx II, it is much smaller, does not need a battery pack, and does not leave any wires dangling (typically USB, or a network cable like the home-made solution I had using a Raspberry Pi). If cost is a concern you can always buy a used unit at a considerable discount, although it may take a while as it is not a high volume product and doesn't show up on the used market that often. I am not a social media type, but do appreciate the option to have images automatically sent to my phone instantaneously. In my case I have my Android phone's hotspot featured turned on, with the WiFi Pro FTP Server app running, and the WFT-E8A configured to automatically upload new captures via FTP. In the FTP configuration, you can set it to retain the folder structure on the memory cards (A for Compact Flash in Slot 1 and B for CFast in Slot 2, then DCIM, etc., this comes in handy if you storage JPEG on one card and RAW on the other but want to transfer both JPEG and RAW via FTP and prefer to keep them separate) or store everything in one folder. I only send JPEGs to my phone automatically, it takes a second or so per image.

When in use with a smart phone (running Canon Connect App) directly attached to the 1DXM2 and therefore in very close proximity to the WFT-E8A (to act as an articulating LCD), how long will time lag be when using Dual Pixel Auto Focus features via Apple iPhone 6+? And Will the lag be noticeable ? I ask because I want purchase the device for this feature only and I plan to shoot fast moving objects. Thanks
