DBX's 565 Dual-Chassis Optical Compressor is a two-channel multi-frequency-band compressor with phantom power that can be used as a dual-mono or stereo unit. It has a 16-stage frequency-range select for processing the low frequencies up to the high-midrange. DBX aims for flat passband processing by using a Linkwitz-Riley 4th-order (24 dB / octave) crossover to avoid partial phase inversion at the output stage.
The 565 allows for 0 to 45 dB instrument input gain and 10 to 60 dB microphone input-gain adjustments through its continuous input-level controls on both channels. It offers attack times ranging from 1 to 100 milliseconds and release times ranging from 0.1 to 3 seconds. Compression ratios can be dialed in from 1:1 to 10:1 with continuous gain reduction adjustment displayed through LEDs.
The 565 has independent channel mutes for low or higher frequencies, and you can A/B each dry and processed signal with the compressor bypass switches, or A/B the summed signal with the global bypass switch. The output level is adjustable with the master level control, and is displayed through a VU meter.
DBX's 565 Compressor is suitable for both live sound and recording applications. It is compatible with other 500-series products and, because of its modular design, is good for mobile contexts.
