The MD-BT01 from Yamaha provides the wireless user with a wide range of performance and composing music applications by connecting iOS devices and Mac computers with instruments that use the older 5-pin DIN MIDI connections. A wireless MIDI connection means not having to worry about plugging anything into an iOS device, and the devices themselves (iPhone/iPad/iPod touch) can also be charged while using apps without worrying about the battery running out.

Plugged it in; set up MacBook, and it works. For iPad, dowloaded Korg BLE-MIDI for setup (keyboard is quite old.) Thank you Yamaha. And good customer service at B&H (as usual).

question
Can I use this adapter with a device with a 5-pin MIDI output and no MIDI input at all? Obviously, I would need to transmit only in one direction.
Yes, I'm using it like that with a Roland JX keyboard.

question
Can this device be used with android?
No, Yamaha only has iOS support for the MD-BT01. You may want to check out the apps on AppStore that support it before purchase. It is not as universal as standard MIDI over USB.

question
Has anyone here used this with Ableton Live on a mac? Looking to use this to track from a Kohler & Campbell Piano Midi out into Ableton
For most playing this is great, very minor latency at times, more related to the receiving devices Bluetooth. Otherwise I really like it, allows me to use K2500XS as controller.

question
Are we to understand that this can be used with any synth/music app or just Yamaha apps? I have seen nothing, ANYWHERE, to imply that it would...
I could not get this device nor its USB companion device to work on any of my keyboards including a Yamaha PSR-S900

question
How is this device powered?
Power is drawn from the MIDI OUT.It just needs 26 mW.Refer to the owner's manual.
