Canon G7 X Mark II overview

  • 1Description

Blending notable imaging qualities with refined handling, the PowerShot G7 X Mark II Digital Camera from Canon is a compact point-and-shoot characterized by its large feature-set. Utilizing a 20.1MP 1" CMOS sensor and DIGIC 7 image processor, this camera offers an expanded sensitivity of ISO 25600 and achieves smooth image quality with reduced noise when working in low-light conditions. Additionally, it is also capable of recording stills at up to 8 fps as well as Full HD 1080p60 video. Complementing the sensor and processor combination is a versatile 4.2x zoom lens, which provides a 24-100mm equivalent focal length range, covering wide-angle to short-telephoto perspectives. A fast f/1.8-f/2.8 maximum aperture maintains consistent performance throughout the zoom range and also benefits working in difficult lighting conditions. The lens design is surrounded by a familiar control ring that offers intuitive control over settings, and a large 3.0" 1.04m-dot tilting touchscreen LCD provides a natural means for composing imagery from a variety of shooting angles. Additionally, the G7 X Mark II also features built-in Wi-Fi with NFC for wireless sharing of imagery to smartphones or tablets, as well as remote camera control from linked mobile devices.

20.1MP 1" CMOS Sensor and DIGIC 7 Image Processor
Delivering notable image quality in a variety of situations, a 20.1MP 1" CMOS sensor and DIGIC 7 image processor combine to create the Canon HS SYSTEM, which avails clean, clear imagery with minimal noise and a wide dynamic range, with a top expanded sensitivity to ISO 25600. The sensor and processor also avail the ability to shoot raw or JPEG files at up to 8 fps or record Full HD 1080p60 video in the MP4 format with stereo sound.

In addition to benefitting image quality, the DIGIC 7 processor also enhances focusing speeds and tracking capabilities for maintaining sharp focus on moving subjects, even in low light and low contrast situations. Additionally, the processor also enables Dual Sensing IS that interprets data from imagery in order to intelligently reduce blur caused by camera shake.
4.2x Optical Zoom Lens and Intelligent IS
A built-in 4.2x optical zoom lens provides a versatile 24-100mm equivalent focal length range, and features a bright f/1.8-f/2.8 maximum aperture range to benefit working in difficult lighting conditions throughout the zoom range. This fast maximum aperture also teams up with a nine-blade diaphragm to produce a smooth bokeh quality when using selective focus techniques. Additionally, a Super Spectra Coating has been applied to individual lens elements to noticeably reduce lens flare and ghosting when shooting in strong lighting conditions.

An Intelligent IS image stabilization system is also incorporated into the lens design to minimize the appearance of camera shake for a variety of shooting scenarios:
  • Normal IS: Corrects for a wide variety of camera movement types when shooting stills.
  • Panning IS: Intended for use when making tracking shots, this setting ensures that IS will not interfere with desired lateral camera movements.
  • Macro (Hybrid) IS: Used for both stills and video recording, this setting corrects for shift-type camera shake that is common when photographing close-up subjects. It also compensates for motion blur associated with recording video while walking.
  • Tripod: Image stabilization is deactivated when shooting stills atop a tripod.
  • Dynamic IS: This setting is effective when recording video using wider focal lengths and simultaneously walking or moving.
  • Powered IS: Ideally suited for shooting video with telephoto focal lengths, this mode compensates for the camera movements that become more apparent with greater zoom magnifications.
  • Active Tripod IS: Unlike the stills tripod mode, this video-specific tripod mode compensates for slight amounts of shake that can be caused when recording movies from a tripod.
Body Design and Built-In Wi-Fi
  • A sleek, compact profile incorporates a large 3.0" 1.04m-dot touchscreen LCD that features a 180° upward, 45° downward tilting design to support taking selfies or working from low shooting angles.
  • A manual control ring surrounds the lens for intuitive control over select camera and exposure settings. The ring can also be set to have clicked intervals, for tactile recognition of settings changes, or can be de-clicked for smooth, quiet transitions between adjustments.
  • Built-in Wi-Fi with NFC allows you to wirelessly share your photos and movies with a linked smartphone or tablet as well as remotely control the camera from the mobile device by using the Camera Connect app.
Other Camera Features
  • Picture Style affords in-camera control over the color, contrast, and sharpness of imagery.
  • In-camera raw file conversions let you preview and apply adjustments to files without needing to process the files on a computer.
  • A Time-Lapse Movie function automatically compiles sequentially-recorded images taken at predetermined intervals and composites them into a seamless movie file for smooth playback.
  • A dedicated Panning function can lock onto an intended subject and, using image stabilization, automatically adjust the shutter speed to render a sharp moving subject set against a blurred background.

Canon G7 X Mark II reviews

PowerShot G7 X Mark II Digital Camera is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 102.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great little camera to have with you all the time. I was looking for a good point & shoot to carry with me all the time, something better than the regular point & shoots, (my Nikon DSLR & lenses were too much baggage sometimes). After a few months of research I decided on the G7 mark II. It gives me great sharp photos quickly on auto or I can go fully manual and plan the shot. The LCD is bright and I have no problem seeing it outdoors. The tilting screen is convenient. I was impressed with it's low noise in low light situations. Also, the built in time lapse function is fun. Probably a little big to stick in your pocket so I have a small case attached to my belt - works for me. Looking forward to using it as a travel camera.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Solid point and shoot The camera is crystal clear. The image stabilization is good. The lens is impressive. The features are magnificent. This is the only canon with the new Digic 7 processor & it is fabulous. The only downsides is that when recording video my camera has a constant internal buzz that gets picked up by the microphone? The autofocus is only okay and the lens selection wheel seems to have little to no algorithm to it. Meaning sometimes a slight turn will go a long way and sometimes not. This is especially annoying when using manual focus mode. Overall the camera is crystal clear and with firmware updates it may be the best bang for your buck camera on the market currently.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Small body but Remarkable products This is the third camera in my household. I have used Nikon DSLR and Sony mirrorless but my wife wanted a small size camera for taking baby and dog pics with good portability. As you know, they move fast in everywhere. This camera is good enough to capture good images under not only outside daylight but also inside fluorescent light with bright lens and high ISO. Based on my opinion, ISO up to 2000 makes very acceptable results without much noise. I have loved using my Nikorr and Zeiss lenses but this pocket sized camera is also very good one for carrying everywhere even with a lot of baby stuffs. This will be beyond your expectations as a point-and-shoot camera. Only cons that I can pick is probably battery doesn't last very long so you'd better keep extra battery in case more than 1 night trip.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Exactly what I was hoping for!! It's the go everywhere camera that I always have with me when I'm not carrying my 1DXII. Love that it operates in a similar fashion to the EOS cameras with similar controls and menus. The Face detection AF and touch screen are incredible!! Excellent lens quality, bright aperture and longer zoom (than the SONY RX models). My only complaint is that the AF confirmation sound can not be turned off without muting all sounds (so you have to hear that AF confirmation if you want to hear the shutter sound). HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Canon You Have done it Again Taking pictures for personal leisure, hence, there are situations I took picture in Low Light, Full Light environments. I personally dislike the use of Flash, this camera with 1.8 - 2.8 fast lens work very well for these environment. The LCD panel is solidly built, so is the camera body, focusing is fast, pictures are extremely sharp. I migrate from Canon G12 , the learning curve is smooth, just have to accommodate learning to use the new features. The touch screen features add a lot of fun in setting up the camera. I have this camera for almost 2 weeks now. All in all, extremely good camera. Nevertheless, the battery capacity is so so, I plan to buy a spare battery, for I know I will need it in a trip. Also, I wish Canon provides interface cable, just like in the other Canon cameras. (extre $16)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from SMALL CAMERA THAT WORKS LIKE A PRO This is my first purchase of a Canon camera. I have DSLR cameras and I normally carry one with two lenses everything I travel and for a woman like me, carrying all these heavy stuff is burdensome. What enticed me to consider the Mark II is the unit's compactness, lightness (compared to DSLR's) and handiness being a small unit and of course the remarkable specs. I was surprised to see that this small camera has the same capability and at par with any DSLR cameras. It's loaded and impressive! I am happy with my purchase of Mark II as it definitely meets my expectations. PROS - Compact, light and handy - Solid built - Fast and sharp AF - Natural true color - Tilting LCD - HDR and Time Lapse CONS - Inferior hand strap (I don't trust it with a camera this expensive) - No interface cable - Fragile flash - inferior grip (too small) - Strap blocking the interface access - Battery life

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Amazing Point & Shoot ... Fabulous ! I bought this camera as a replacement for my aging Canon s95. There are times I want to travel light and need an alternative to my Canon DSLR. I was hesitant at first, but the more I started using the camera the more I love it. The quality of the image capture is amazing, and I love the fast lens. It is a tad larger than the s95, but I find the added weight and the addition to a grip makes for a much nicer feel when using the camera. The ability to tilt the rear screen is a very nice feature too. The one drawback I have found (not a problem with the camera) is that the version of Photoshop (CS6) and Lightroom (version 5.7) I have don't recognize the raw files. I believe the only solution is a subscription to Photoshop CC. No sweat - I just bought Adobe stock (symbol: ADBE) The camera is a bit pricey ... but in the end well worth the price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Manual Needs Improvements I had this camera for 3 months now, I enjoy this camera very much. Some minor learning curve when moving up from Canon G12 to G7X M2. While the camera is a great product, the Manual I find it hard to follow, lots of words but not enough pictures to guide you through. I particular find the section on Wi-Fi Functions, quite painful to follow . I have to try and error before finally transferring my pictures from camera to Smart phone. I am waiting for the third party books on this camera in order to fully utilize its capability. Nevertheless, with all that I know, I have already found this camera is a good product. I would love it even more should it comes with a better written and more comprehensible manual.
