In addition to the platforms supported by the front end, the server is available for FreeBSD, Linux and nine different NAS devices. Plex Media Server can be configured to index content in any directory on the machine it is run on, as well as to automatically acquire content from such sources as Aperture, iPhoto, and iTunes. Content may be transcoded by the server before it is streamed, in order to reduce bandwidth requirements or for compatibility with the device being streamed to.

Plex Media Server allows extensibility through the addition of plug-ins. Many such plug-ins are available through the built-in Plex Online digital distribution service. This service can be used directly within Plex Home Theater or Plex Media Center's GUI.

Plex uses the metadata from several free open-source online libraries to automatically find all artwork, media descriptions, and theme music for the entire library.

    WD EX2 Ultra reviews

8TB My Cloud EX2 Ultra 2-Bay Personal Cloud Storage Server is rated 3.4 out of 5 by 21.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good for Backing Up Computers I assigned a fixed IP address to the drive before attaching it to my system. It worked from the very start. I used True Image software to backup my computer to the drive. It took less than 2 hours to backup 650 GB of HD videos using a wired connection (not wireless). I'm using Windows 10 and at first I found it hard to view all folders/files on the new drive. I didn't want to do mapping of each folder. I discovered that I could see all folders by simply clicking as follows: Show hidden icons > WD Access > MYCloudEX2Ultra > Open. To simplify further, I created a shortcut on my desktop to one of the drive's folders. Now clicking on that shortcut, File Explorer will allow me to navigate the entire drive. Nice.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Better Than Expected I have a small consulting business and I'm using the My Cloud EX2 Ultra to back-up four Mac computers, as well as share files. It was easy to set-up Time Machine and it has worked flawless over the past couple of weeks. The dashboard software keeps my rating from being 5 stars. I recommend the EX2 Ultra to any small business. I should note that I have not used the cloud-based remote access yet.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Easy to set up, backuo process requires additonal info. Having purchased WD products in the past, I did not find the initial setup difficult. However, the process to enable PC backups need additional information. For example. the WD Smartware is very slow and not that easy to use. In addition, it does not do incremental backups so it overwrites the last backup. If you have Windows 7 Professional, you can use the Windows backup, but if you have the a letter version, you will have to use Smartware or another backup program. The user interface it very easy to use and provides all of the information that is required to manage the device. Overall, it is well worth the money,.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect Plex Server I replaced a Mac Mini with two 4 TB drives with this bit of kit after I filled to the two drives. I was able to plug the two full drives in to the back of this NAS and add 16 TB included with this NAS in a JBOD configuration. Now I have a complete plex server in a small package and it allowed me to free up me Mac for other uses. The NAS serves plex flawlessly with its built in app. My media centre now has 8 TB of shows with another 16 TB of space to take me into the coming years of TV shows and Movies. A perfect solution for a complete media server even if you have a couple of USB drives already full of content.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great Product - Not for me After setting it up and spending 40 hours copying 1.5GB ... I found it to be very S L O W. I tried everything to increase copy speed. I bought Thundebolt to Gigabit dongle, USB3-to Gigabit dongle... I'm sure it does the job fine for a family with small photo files but my 229MB Tiffs took forever. It is supposed to work with Mac Time Machine but never did...after much research I learned I needed to reformat it to HFS+ which I was going to try but I'm now waiting 5 hours for it to restore to factory defaults. I will be selling it and replacing it with a 6TB USB3/Thundebolt drive.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Quality hardware, bad software. I purchased this product to allow me to back up my collection of photos. I have them cataloged by camera models and within the models I have client folders. My storage capacity on my photo hard drive was down to 20 GB. I decided to purchase this NAS device so that I could move camera folders of the cameras I no longer owned to free up 1 TB of space. The reason for the 3 stars is the complex software and my inability to access the backed up files easily. I eventually purchased a newer computer with USB 3 ports and attached a device that allowed me to place two hard drives in hot swappable bays. It's fast enough that I can use them directly from the dock. I now use the Storage Sever for back up purposes only.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great speed once correctly set-up! This is a follow-up to my previous review. To get great speed, I needed to change the Max SMB Protocol from SMB 2 to SMB 3. To make this change, it is found under Settings > Network > Windows Services > Max SMB Protocol. I now upload 12GBHD videos in under 2 minutes with a wired Ethernetconnection.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Hardware Implementation, Software is so so... The NAS was set up to support a HP desktop, HP laptop and Dell laptop. Hardware implementation was a challenge because the only literature provided is a simple card with 3 steps on how to attach the NAS. I am very proficient with computers but this was my first foray into setting up a NAS. Using the Dashboard as Western Digital recommends was not straightforward. A number of steps both forward and backward occurred before I finally got the NAS installed. Please note that I did download the manual and read through it but the information was not as helpful in the installation. The biggest issue and why I feel like giving this a 2 star versus a 4 star rating was the WD Sync software. The hardware deserves a 4-5 star but the installation and the WD Sync software drop it to a 3-4. The software is great in synchronizing the files for all three computers but if you install the NAS with a dynamic IP, the WD Sync is not smart enough to know that the IP address can change. So, for example, I installed the NAS on a Netgear router with a dynamic IP address of XXX.XXX.X.8. The next day, the Netgear assigned it XXX.XXX.X.9 and now the WD Sync software can't find the NAS! Fortunately, I found a hint on a forum and once I set up the NAS on a static IP address of XXX.XXX.X.8 WD Sync worked just fine. Based on comments I searched online, this is an issue affecting numerous users and it has happened for awhile. Why WD Sync has not been revised is unacceptable. This is a great unit and I'm very pleased with it but installation and set up is not for the faint of heart. It can be worked through easily but it won't be straightforward if you have more than once computer. Finally, I have not yet set up the sharing (DLNA) but will do so in the future. Hopefully, that doesn't result in any new software surprises.
