Icy Dock ToughArmor Overview

Introducing the Icy Dock MB994SP-4S Quad Bay 2.5" SATA/SAS Mobile Rack for use in a single 5.25" device bay. This product is constructed of heavy duty metal to hold up in the toughest of conditions. It includes ventilation slots on the front & back for maximum airflow to keep both SATA and SAS drives running cool, and an LED is placed on the front of each drive tray to give the user drive status at all times. Dual 4-pin power connectors are used to ensure a consistent power supply to all 4 drives, whether they are low power SSD's or power hungry 15000 RPM SAS drives. Also included are dual 40mm cooling fans to keep the drives running in at optimal temperatures in even the most intense applications.

Great Product if you want to save Space and Power

This is a great product if you have limited space and power. Use 1- 5.25 Drive Bay and then mount up to 2 - 2.5mm drives and one slimline (Laptop) dvd/blueray Drive in unit. I'll be getting another :-) :-) If the screws don't fit then use other screws. Extra power connectors on the back if you don't have the right one coming from your power supply.

Very solid, all metal construction. Definitely a tougher build than other removable-rack drive decks.

is the 8 drive version *really* only 4.1cm/1.6" tall? i just want to make sure before i try to cram it into a 1U rack

The dimensions for the Icy Dock ToughArmor MB998SP-B 8 x 2.5" SATA HDD/SSD Backplane Cage are 142.4 x 146 x 41.3 mm or 5.65" x 5.74" x 1.62" inches. It is meant to be placed in a 5.25" computer bay.

What do i need to purchase to use this as a standalone unit?

As your laptop does not have external sata or SAS interfaces, only Thunderbolt or USB, there would need to be a computer in between to manage the connection as well as disperse the drives properly into your laptop's file system. A computer basically, or file/drive server. This server would interface to each physical drive via SATA and provide connectivity via USB or some other consumer level connection method. This box cannot serve these drives alone without an actual computer with processor to handle traffic management and device connectivity.

It's platform agnostic. You can use any 2.5 SSD drive that will work with your OS.
