Tamron 90mm f/2.8 overview

  • 1Description

Optimized for close-up shooting, the SP 90mm f/2.8 Di Macro 1:1 VC USD Lens from Tamron is a short telephoto prime designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs. Offering a life-size maximum magnification ratio of 1:1, this lens benefits working with small and nearby subjects and employs a Floating System for maintained image quality throughout the 11.8" to infinity focusing range. One Low Dispersion and two Extra Low Dispersion glass elements are incorporated into the optical design to minimize chromatic aberrations and color fringing for clean, consistent sharpness and clarity throughout the magnification range. BBAR and eBAND coatings have also been applied to minimize flare and ghosting for increased contrast when working in strong lighting conditions, and a rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality to benefit shallow depth of field imagery. As an update to the classic 90mm macro, this enhanced version is well-suited to the high-resolution crop of DSLRs and blends timeless appeal and functionality with current imaging performance.

Supporting the imaging attributes is Vibration Compensation image stabilization, which minimizes the appearance of camera shake by up to 3.5 stops for sharper handheld shooting. Also aiding in creating sharp imagery, a precise, macro-optimized ring-type USD autofocus motor provides fast and well-controlled focusing performance. A dedicated USD actuator is used to refine focusing precision at close distances and also compensates for small amounts of camera shake common to working at higher magnifications. Additionally, the focus motor affords full-time manual focus control for a greater range of adjustment capabilities. A moisture-resistant physical construction enables its use in trying environments and the front element has also received a fluorine coating to guard against smudges and moisture from affecting image quality. Additionally, this lens is compatible with the optional TAP-in Console for fine-tuning focusing performance and updating the lens' firmware.

A short-telephoto focal length optimized for macro shooting, this 90mm lens is designed for full-frame Canon EF-mount DSLRs, and is also compatible with APS-C models where it will provide a 144mm equivalent focal length.
Bright f/2.8 maximum aperture offers a clean viewfinder image and is also beneficial for working in low-light conditions and for isolating focus.
One LD (Low Dispersion) and two XLD (Extra Low Dispersion) glass elements are incorporated in the 14 elements, 11 groups optical design, and contribute to a marked reduction in chromatic aberrations and color fringing throughout the aperture and focusing ranges.
Designed as a true macro lens, this optic affords a life-size 1:1 maximum magnification ratio along with an 11.8" minimum focusing distance to suit working with close-up subjects, and a Floating System is employed for consistent image quality and sharpness throughout the focusing range.
eBAND (Extended Bandwidth & Angular-Dependency) and BBAR (Broad-Band Anti-Reflection) coatings have been applied to lens elements to reduce surface reflections and prevent lens flare and ghosting for increased contrast and color accuracy.
VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilization is incorporated into the lens' design to minimize the appearance of camera shake by up to 3.5 stops for sharper handheld shooting in low-light conditions. An accelerometer has also been added to the VC system to compensate for shift-type camera shakes along the X/Y plane, and a gyro sensor is used to accurately detect and enable motion compensation throughout the focusing range.
Ring-type USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) motor and an optimized USD actuator are employed for fast, precise, and quiet autofocus performance that benefits both stills and video recording. This motor also enables full-time manual focus control without having to shift into a dedicated MF mode.
An internal focusing mechanism is also used to maintain the overall lens length during use, along with a comfortable working distance of approximately 5.5".
A Focus Limiter Switch is used to constrain the lens' focusing range for faster performance. A choice of 1.6'-infinity, 11.8"-1.6', and 11.8"-infinity ranges are available.
Moisture-resistant construction incorporates seals around the lens mount and other areas to benefit working in inclement conditions. Additionally, a fluorine coating has been applied to the front lens element to repel water, fingerprints, and smudges for easier cleaning of the lens surface.
Rounded nine-blade diaphragm produces a pleasing out-of-focus quality when working with shallow depth of field techniques.
Compatible with the optional TAP-in Console for updating the lens' firmware as well as adjusting focus settings via the TAP-in Utility software.
SILKYPIX Developer Studio for Tamron software is included with the lens, which, aside from enabling basic raw processing and image adjustments, works to specifically correct for various aberrations, including color fringing, distortion, and peripheral light fall-off, using dedicated optical data from Tamron's SP-series of lenses.

    Tamron 90mm f/2.8 reviews

SP 90mm f/2.8 Di Macro 1:1 VC USD Lens for Canon EF is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 23.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Sharpness I am an amateur photographer. I wanted to get into Macro photography, but I also wanted a fast portrait lens. I ordered this on the site the day it became available due to reviews on the previous version. A few days later, I did a newborn baby session. The shots were amazingly sharp. I leveraged the auto-focus limiting switch so it would focus quickly for close-ups and switched to longer setting for full body shots. Based on previous reviews, I shot at F4.0-4.5 most of the time. The client was thrilled with the results. One reason I chose the lens was because of the availability of the pod for upgrades and adjustments, but after this shoot, I don't think I'll need adjustments. I highly recommend the lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Two lenses for the price of one Initially I was skeptical about the focussing capabilities of this lens after reading reviews. Yes, it can jump around with focussing but this is only really an issue if you jump from a macro shot to say a portrait about 10 feet away and then back to a macro shot. While this is can be a drawback, this is a rare situation, and you can always flip it to manual autofocus to get a quick read or just adjust the focus distance. This is a beautiful lens that fits perfectly in my bag as a macro-workhorse and as a tack sharp portrait lens. What's more, I've always found 100mm and 105mm lenses just a touch too close, so this 90 mm allows me to pull-back from the subject with the knowledge that I can always punch in on post. This lens fits on my C100 and operates with the AF just fine. The build quality is excellent, the VC is solid, and the price is right.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful Macro Absolutely love this lens. The focus is super sharp and I love the image quality. I've been wanting a macro lens for years and fell in love with Tamron. The colors are so bright and the photos appear the same as the objects do in real life. Love the details that I can get even when I'm close up to the subject. Wonderful image stabilization, I have a small shake in my hands but with the Vc you can't even tell. The 90mm works perfect for both macro and portrait work so it's perfect for me. I love this lens and it sold me on fully switching over to Tamron

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bravo, Tamron Bought this as a portrait lens and it delivers. Canon shooter, considered the 100mm macro IS and 85mm f1.2 and having shot both, the price was right to take a shot on this one. Glad I did. The VC (image stabilization) is outstanding. Took some shots right out of the box at 1/40 handheld and they came out crisp. Needed slight micro adjustment out of the box, it was forward about an 1/8.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must have macro/portraits lens I've been using this lens on my Canon 6D for a little over 3 weeks and compared to my Tamron 35mm VC lens, its exactly what I expected. Images are tack sharp, as a macro lens should be. The VC is very handy to have on this lens. I've shot some products with this and it never missed focus and is very quick focusing as well. I also use this now as a portrait lens and it also works excellent for this too. I would easily recommend this. Tamrons new line of lenses are top notch.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very good macro lense Performs as well as canon 100 2.8L in my opinion. Although the bokeh from the canon seems a tad better than the tamron. However I bought this lense with the expectation to use it as a portrait lense as well in wedding event.. for some reasons, I felt i were struggling to pull focus if the subject was standing about 10 to 15 feet away.. I wasn't aware of these limitations before I bought it, and I almost completely missed out the couple kisses in a wedding event I shot last week. Therefore, I ended up return the lense. That is not to say the lense could not be used as a portrait lense but not without a quirk.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Macro Lens After much deliberation, I opted for this new Tamron lens over the tried and true (but more expensive) Canon 100mm Macro. I am a hobby photographer and I am not going to go into a detailed analysis of every aspect of this lens. Rather, I will tell you what I think of it from a general consumer's practical viewpoint. First off, the lens is well-made. The metal body is a big plus in terms of making it look and feel like a $650 lens, and the focus ring is smooth and snug. All of the lens functions are easily accessible. Second, it takes sharp, clear photos. I have it mounted to a Canon T6i, and this setup gives me photos of greater quality than you would think a budget-restricted hobbyist could afford. It does its macro purpose flawlessly, and it makes portraits outstanding -- you can back up to a decent distance to compress facial features while still maintaining that tight frame. The only quirk I have noticed is that the autofocus is fairly noisy -- until you get used to it, as I have. However, on macro shots, I often use manual focus anyway. Bottom line: If you are less than super rich, this Tamron 90mm Macro is a great alternative to more costly name-brand lenses on the market and is arguably on the same plain as its more expensive cousins. Even with an economy camera, if you are worth your salt as a photographer, you can take top-notch, professional-grade photos through this lens. P.S. You can't beat the 6-year warranty from Tamron, either. That was a selling point on this lens when I chose it over the $800 Canon.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Top-notch macro lens! A very sharp and contrasty lens. Even wide open. I shoot with a Canon EOS 6d, and I haven't seen better images than those I've shot with this lens. It's also lightweight without having a cheap feel to it.
