  • 1Description

The Photographers Formulary Gold 231 Toner is capable of producing a wide range of colors.

When used alone, Gold 231 gives deep blue tones. When used after sepia toning, red colors are produced whose brilliance are determined by the type of paper used.

Partial toning in Hypo-Alum Toner followed by Gold 231 gives blue-black shadows and soft reddish highlights.

Gold 231 toner contains ammonium thiocyanate and gold chloride. The chemicals in the kit are used to make a working solution. The capacity is determined by the method of toning.

Photographers' Formulary 06-0210 reviews

Toner for Black & White Prints - Gold 231 is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Mostly worth it Toning is full of exciting possibilities, and is one of the most satisfying things to do in the darkroom. Taking old, dry prints and transforming them again is a lot more interesting than running off multiple versions of an image on an inkjet printer (less noisy too). This Toner is expensive, but it will impart a beautiful steel-blue, distinct from the Iron Blue Toner (and with no unwanted staining). It should be noted that you can buy this Toner for less if you purchase the kit that does not contain fixer (hypo). The addition of fixer is only necessary for Sepia Sulfide prints toned in Gold, which results in vivid peach-orange-red tones, even on RC papers. I would argue it's probably more economical to buy bulk sodium thiosulfate and the fixer-less kit than to buy this kit over and over, but it's your call.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cools Prints Nicely Bought this kit for a class along with the Sulfide Sepia toner. The gold toner alone gives prints a cold blue cast rather than a full on feel of toning. When used with the sepia toner, the red tone produced gave some added depth to prints. The kit is somewhat limited in how many prints can be toned, but it is well worth the price. Worked especially well with Slavich grade 2 paper.
