PocketWizard Plus IV overview

  • 1Description

PocketWizard introduces the Plus IV Tranceiver with the many professional features we've come to expect plus TTL on-camera flash combined with remote manual flash using most Canon, Nikon, Panasonic cameras and some Fuji and Olympus equipment. The Plus IV has 32 channels (16 standard and 16 Quad Zone). Besides eliminating interference this also allows you to trigger flashes in 4 separate (A,B,C,D) zones when doing multiple setups. Auto-Sensing automatically selects the transmitter or receiver mode appropriate to the setup. Auto-Sensing also works in tandem with Auto-Relay mode to allow to can also trigger a remote camera along with remote flashes. Two-Stage Triggering technology allows to wake and focus your camera by partially depressing the test button and fire it by fully depressing it.

The Plus IV's long triggering range is consistent with other PocketWizards but setting it to Long Range mode nearly doubles the triggering distance for difficult situations. For the maximum in extended range shooting place a Plus IV in Repeater Mode (RP) between your transmitter and receiver to repeat the signal and complete the connection.

The Plus IV is compatible with all Standard channel or simple triggering PocketWizard radios of the same frequency including PocketWizard-enabled photo gear from Profoto, Dynalite, Norman, Photogenic, and Sekonic light meters.

On-Camera TTL Flash / Remote Manual Flash
The Plus IV features a top shoe providing TTL compatibility with most Canon, Nikon, Panasonic cameras and flashes as well as some Fuji and Olympus gear. This allows photographers the versatility to shoot with an on-camera flash in TTL mode while triggering their remotes in manual mode. Easily slide a speedlight into the top shoe of your receiving radio and you are ready to start triggering your remote flash in minutes. A perfect setup for wedding photographers.
Top Shoe
The top shoe on the Plus IV allows photographers to easily set-up their speedlights. No sync cord required.
Simple User Interface
The Plus IV has an intuitive user interface where all channels, zones and modes can be easily engaged via a soft-touch keypad, and displayed on an easy-to-read backlit 1" LCD display. When you're working in dark environments, simply press any key other than TEST to illuminate the LCD.
32 Channels
With 32 channels (16 standard plus 16 Quad-Zone Triggering channels), the PocketWizard Plus IV Transceiver enables you to trigger individual or groups of lights simultaneously or individually. This is critical for working in crowded venues or with multiple lighting set-ups.
Quad-Zone Triggering
Selective Quad-Zone Triggering keeps you shooting photos, not running back and forth to your lighting or cameras. Without leaving the camera position, you can wirelessly activate or deactivate your remote flashes or cameras in 4 separately controllable zones: A, B, C, or D. This is ideal when using multiple lighting setups or turning remote cameras or flashes on and off as needed.
Auto-Sensing Transceiver
With its patented Auto-Sensing Transceiver technology, the Plus IV Transceiver is one smart radio. When set to TxRx, it will instantly and intelligently switch between transmitter and receiver modes as needed for greater flexibility on the job. The Plus IV may be set to transmit (Tx) or receive (Rx) independently if needed.
Two-Stage Remote Camera Triggering
The Plus IV Transceiver is the perfect solution for remote camera triggering. The unique two-stage TEST button on the Plus IV works just like the shutter release button on your camera. Press it halfway and your remote camera wakes up to meter and focus. Press TEST all the way to take your photo. When released, your remote camera will return to sleep mode normally: a real battery saver.
Auto-Relay Mode
Our Auto-Sensing Transceiver technology lets you trigger a remote camera in sync with remote flashes using only 3 PocketWizard radios: the one in your hands, a Plus IV cabled to your remote camera, and the one connected to your remote flash set to one channel higher.
Long-Range Capability
Range is comparable to other PocketWizard radios. Shooting environments are seldom ideal, so the Plus IV incorporates two range extending modes for the challenges of the real world. Use Long Range Mode (LR) to nearly double the effective triggering distance in almost any environment.
Repeater Mode (RP)
In very challenging environments or extremely long working ranges, place a Plus IV in Repeater Mode (RP) between your transmitter and receiver to repeat the signal and complete the connection. These modes take a little extra time to do their jobs, so maximum X-sync may be reduced when firing remote flashes in LR or RP modes.
High-Speed Receive
Normally, the Plus IV is capable of triggering lights or cameras at a sustained rate of up to 12 frames per second (fps) - a standard for PocketWizard radios. Set the Plus IV to High Speed Receive Mode (HSR) and trigger at rates up to 14.5 fps, beyond the capability of most of today's cameras. This mode can also help high fps triggering compatibility for any flash.
External Power and Firmware Upgradeable
The Plus IV is normally powered by two AA (IEC:LR6) batteries. For long term remote placement, use an AC adapter, like the PW-AC-USB Adapter, that plugs into the standard Mini-B USB port of the Plus IV. The USB port also enables future upgrades of the Plus IV operating system.
PocketWizard Compatible
The Plus IV is compatible with all Standard channel or simple triggering PocketWizard radios of the same frequency including PocketWizard-enabled photo gear from Profoto, Dynalite, Norman, Photogenic and Sekonic light meters. The PocketWizard wireless system allows for total flexibility with whatever lights or cameras you may be working with.

    PocketWizard Plus IV reviews

Plus IV Transceiver (Black) is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 29.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from No Cable necessary for Speedlites! It is seriously amazing to be able to snap on a speedlite and start shooting there and then. I love the PW3s but having to screw in an extra cable started to get pretty tedius, and now I don't have to keep track of my speedlite cables or worry about ataching my Pocketwizards to a stand. These PW4s are backwards compatible with my PW3s and Sekonic L478-DR, and the best part is they work the same exact way. Basically you get all the functionality of the previous version in a new enclosure optimized for speedlites. One of my favorite new features is the color LED that tells guages battery life. While they are wonderful for Speedlites I still prefer to use the PW3s for my strobes.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Finally It's taken PocketWizard a long time to produce a trigger with this 'horizontal' configuration and a ttl pass through. As you would expect the Plus IV works well and the build quality is pretty good but it is slightly larger than the Plus III. It's very useful to have a separate on/off switch and a button-lock switch and I like it that the display can be read even when the camera is tilted to 'portrait' mode. The hot-shoe and foot are both constructed from metal and the fact that it lays flat on the camera will hopefully make it less vulnerable to accidental breakage than the Plus III. I'm giving it four stars because like most PocketWizard devices it is expensive and is significantly more than the Plus III - why?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cool new product from Pocket Wizard Really nice unit that works great on the camera. Laying it down is something I had always wanted for a on camera trigger. I do use the Mini but it does not have the channels or zones like this new Plus IV. Only thing is the 1/4 20 thread seems a little close to the knob used to tighten down to a hot shoe so my 1/4-20 Bogen stud would screw in but would not clear when placed in my Bogen swivel head. Have been using it the last few days to trigger strobes out on football fields using different zones with different lights. Works perfect...

Rated 1 out of 5 by from In theory a very good idea I purchased the Pocket Wizard Plus IV with great anticipation. The idea of no more cables getting in the way was appealing. Unfortunately, the unit doesn't work in TTL when using the Nikon D810 with the Nikon SB700 flash. It only operated in the manual mode. When using it in TTL along with the Plus IV the non-CLS compatible symbol appears on the flash unit making the flash unusable. At first I thought it was a defective unit, but when the second unit I ordered did the same, I was very disappointed. Oh, by the way it also doesn't operate with the Nikon SB-800 flash. I just wish they would have tested the Plus IV more thoroughly before they were released. When contacting the Pocket Wizard people, they suggested that I use scotch tape on my camera shoe to remedy the problem. Guess what? Didn't work. I've been using Pocket Wizard products for years without any issues. What a shame on this one.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Poor Construction This thing works great but it is not a strong build. If you intend to mount it to your hot shoe and then place your Nikon SB on the top ( as you would think its intended to do by the way it was designed...) the weight of the flash will actually start to crack and then brake the PLASTIC around the bottom attachment that is mounted to your cameras hot shoe, leaving you with your flash and PW plus4 on the ground. I was using this at weddings and in less than a year I had to switch back to the iii model mounted to the side of the flash unit. Sad because this would have made it much better than having all those cables and such. Poor design that just didnt last me very long at all....sad.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Top of the line. Great upgrade from the Plus X's. No more dealing with cords, adapters, or lanyards. No range issues so far, but have only tested at up to 50m, although I and using proper 1.5v AA batteries and not NiMH rechargeables. The added zone application that came from the Plus III's work great, when dealing with weddings. Only cons would be that there was not an added foot, being able to have these stand on their own would've been great. The stand screw mount is also in a tighter spot. I would've like to be able to quickly screw on a tripod plate to it, but the arca swiss style ones I have don't work.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Used to control Profoto and Canon flashes simultaneously I bought this for a very specific use-case - I have a mixture of Profoto B1/B2 and Canon 600EX-RT flashes that I wanted to trigger simultaneously while still being able to control the flashes by-way-of the Profoto Air Remote TTL-C and Canon ST-E3-RT. The PocketWizard Plus IV is on the camera hotshoe with the Canon ST-E3-RT on top of it. The Profotos have PocketWizard Plus IIIs attached to them. The Profoto Air Remote TTL-C is mounted on a cold-shoe apart from the camera. With this setup, I can manually control all of the flashes by-way-of their respective remotes and trigger them all simultaneously. For this use-case, the PocketWizard Plus IV is outstanding. Interestingly, if I switch the Profoto Air Remote TTL-C and Canon ST-E3-RT remotes in this scenario, it does not work.
