Overpriced "Smart UPS"? Battery
This low rating is more about APC and the supposedly smart UPS it goes in. Battery life is listed as 3 to 5 years. Original lasted 3 years and 2 months (technically in spec). Specification lists the battery as “Hot Swappable”; Nope. Another states the “cartridge” (two batteries bonded together) is plug-n-play; again nope! The replacement instructions were very convoluted about how to reset the “smart” UPS electronics, so the end of battery life alert stays off. (See photo from after battery change) Schneider Electric (APC) website just refers you to the user manual. Which leads me to believe (please correct me if I am wrong) the Smart UPS uses a duration timer rather than any actual battery health monitoring (otherwise it would know you changed the battery). I wouldn’t be so critical if this was a low-level UPS or cheap battery.
