Garmin zumo 595LM overview

  • 1Description

Get turn by turn directions right in your ear with the zumo 595LM GPS System from Garmin. Designed for motorcycle use, this GPS device connects to an optional headset or helmet to provide directions, make calls, or even listen to music. You can even add an additional headset for a partner if you choose. Curvy Roads routing directs you to the nearest set of switchbacks so you can air it out a bit. A service history log lets you keep track of oil changes, spark plug swaps, new tires, and other maintenance. You can even set your bike up with a Tire Pressure Monitor System using optional equipment. Multiple mounts are included so you can use it on your bike as well as your car. Rider alerts warn you about sharp curves, state helmet laws, as well as speed cameras. The orientation of the screen can be changed from landscape to portrait, and transflective technology gives it a bright, crisp color display that reduces glare and is easy to read in sunlight.

To enhance road awareness and encourage a safer ride, the zumo 595LM provides helpful alerts for sharp curves ahead, speed changes, railroad and animal crossings, school zones, and more. Additionally, you're notified when you need to check state helmet laws so you can be in compliance even in an unfamiliar state. It will even provide warnings if you're about to drive the wrong way on a one-way street. You also receive alerts for nearby red light and speed cameras. Plus, for longer rides, a fatigue warning will even suggest break times and potential rest areas worth considering after hours on the road.

Garmin Real Directions speaks street names so you don't need to take your eyes off of the road. Live traffic and weather radar data are available via Smartphone Link app. Lane assist and junction view ensure that you are in the right lane of travel while route avoidance lets you avoid highways or tolls. You can see upcoming points of interest as you motor along so you can pull over with plenty of time if one catches your eye. A speed limit indicator helps keep you on the right side of the law by displaying limits for most major roads to help you avoid a speeding ticket. Supporting custom maps, this model also features 3-D terrain mapping. Round trip routing gets you back to where you started for a leisurely cruise.

The built-in maps have lifetime updates available for free from Garmin, which are stored on the internal solid-state memory. You can add your own points of interest, up to 1000. Add a microSD card using the built-in slot to store additional data if needed, or to upload additional information. This model is compatible with TOPO maps if your travels take you off road. Trip Log displays statistics about your time on the road so you can analyze your trip later, while Trip Planner lets you plan your route in advance. Music and media control is supported, including Pandora and Spotify.

    Garmin zumo 595LM reviews

zumo 595LM GPS System is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 3.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Garmin Zumo 595LM, Best of Breed for motorcycle navigation! I am going to start with something generally glossed over, the mounting system. For most motorcycle gps systems the mount is either proprietary (such as BMW's) or appears as an afterthought. Some manufacturers attempt to create their own but generally fall short in quality and reliability. After all, they are GPS manufacturers, not mount manufacturers. With the Zumo 595LM Garmin did it right! Included with the unit is a RAM mounting system. RAM makes one of the most versatile and reliable mounting systems out there. I installed using the bar mount (a U shaped bolt and mounting bracket). The 595LM can be mounted in a large number of positions to get the perfect angle for your bike. Also, when mounted it is SOLID and I mean ROCK SOLID. There is no wiggle, even when applying much more than necessary pressure to the mount it does not move! I realize this is not a review of the RAM system but Garmim deserves recognition selecting a solid mounting system and sticking to what they know best, GPS. And speaking of what they know best, this GPS is just wonderful on a motorcycle. Pairing: The unit pairs easily with most cell phones. I tried android and IOS, both worked seamlessly. I also was able to quickly pair it with my Shuberth helmet communication system. Within minutes I was listening to music and receiving guidance in my helmet. Integration: The 595LM works wonderfully with applications such as Pandora, Spotify and 'on phone' music. The controls for both Pandora and Spotify are simple to use on the GPS. It does require you install an app on your phone for full gps control (playlist selection, browse, etc) but even without the app you can start music on your phone directly then control pause, un-pause, fast forward, etc from the Zumo. Installation: I have already covered the mounting system, but the remainder of the installation is about as easy as it could be on a motorcycle. The wiring harness is long enough to reach from the dash (or bars) to the battery on just about any motorcycle. In it's basic installation, only three connections are required; battery +, ground and a switched +. There are, however additional connections for wired communications systems typically found on touring bikes (such as the Honda Goldwing). Also, if you have an installed audio system, as is often found on cruisers or touring bikes, you can integrate that way as well. Operation: The interface is simple but intuitive and full featured. It is also quite 'glove friendly'. It does take some time to sit down with the instructional information and work through the menu system. This is not because it is complicated but if you do not do this you miss out on some great shortcuts. For example you can get back to the main screen from a few levels deep by a simple press and hold of an on screen icon. The curvy roads feature is wonderful for those looking for a bit more adventure. You can select from three levels of curvy-nes, each a bit more aggressive than the last. It doesn't work well in urban or even suburban areas as it routes you through too many neighborhoods. However, once you are away from the cities it can automatically put together some really nice rides. I tested it on a mixture of highway, back road, gravel and forest service roads. To my surprise, it never lost my location. Also, the map data was always up to date and accurate (at least for where I ride). It continued to navigate for me, even after twisting and turning deep on many of the forest service roads, many of which I don't think see 10 vehicles a year (OK, maybe I exaggerate here but you get my point). It does have an 'off road' option which I have not tested. It would be great for the adventure riders. Basically when put into an off road option it does not try to 'pin' you to the nearest road. Since I have not tested this feature that is about all I will say on it. I bring it up as I do feel it is a true value add if you are off road regularly. So far the only down side I have experienced is a somewhat dim screen in direct sunlight. I could still see it but some of the smaller text (adjacent road names, for example) were a bit hard to make out. The screen is a nice matte finish so there is little to no glare but the wash out was noticeable. Since I could still see my location and the road I was on I do not consider this a major hindrance, more of an annoyance at rare times. It appears that the sun needed to be directly in line with the screen for this to happen, so even when it did, it was very short lived. The Zumo 595LM is not cheap, it is one of the costliest units out there. I do believe, at least in this instance, you truly get what you pay for here. Anyone putting down some large mileage numbers, touring the country or using it in less than friendly areas (forest service, off road, etc) will be quite happy with it's performance.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Upgraded from a 660 This is a whole new ballgame from the 660 and I'm having to learn all over! So far it's been a little challenging but starting to get the hang of it and think that without too much more effort I'll be in the "love it" mood!
