Impossible I-1 overview

  • 1Description

After ushering in a new era of instant film, Impossible has taken another step towards a full revival of instant imaging with the creation of the I-1 Instant Film Camera. The first new camera in years to accept Polaroid 600-type instant film, the I-1 is a fresh take on a classic, offering the legendary format with advanced features and capabilities.

For imaging, the camera relies on an 82-109mm lens with a 5-zone autofocus system. Depending on the zone, the focal length will fluctuate slightly. Of course, the changes are slight and composition is made easy with a removable pop-up optical viewfinder on the top of the camera. One of the signatures of classic Polaroid images is the flash, and the I-1 brings it to modern times with an advanced ring flash that offers twelve LEDs to illuminate your subject. For tactile control, the I-1 has physical lighten/darken and flash on/off controls to help dial in the appropriate exposures. For advanced techniques, the camera offers Bluetooth LE 4.0 connectivity for connecting to a smartphone or tablet.

Using an iOS or watchOS device, photographers can take full control over the camera, including full manual operation, remote triggering, and even a variety of creative modes. Additionally, the camera has a built-in USB-rechargeable lithium-ion battery that allows it to work with I-type film that does not have a battery pack and it has a 1/4"-20 tripod thread on the base.

I-1 Camera App
  • Remote Trigger: Use your phone as a wireless remote for the I-1, triggering it from a distance or for selfies and group pictures.
  • Manual Mode: Take full control over aperture, shutter speed, flash strength, and focus distance.
  • Self Timer: Set the I-1 to capture a photo after a 5, 10, or 20 second delay.
  • Double Exposure: Superimpose two images on a single piece of instant film by exposing the single sheet twice.
  • Noise Trigger: Trigger a photo by making a loud noise like a click or a clap.
  • Light Paint: Use your phone's flashlight to draw lines and shapes with light on your photos or selectively illuminate areas of a darkened scene.
  • Color Paint: Draw waves of colored light onto your images before they develop by picking a color from your phone's screen and moving it in front of the lens as the camera prepares the photo.
  • Scanner: Allows you to take a digital photo of your instant photo, crop the frame, and then share it online.

    Impossible I-1 reviews

I-1 Instant Film Camera is rated 3.3 out of 5 by 15.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Battery Charging Issues Just picked up this camera and put it up for charging, Its been a little close to 4 and half hours on an i phone charger and the camera shows no sign of any life except for the red charging light. I read now there are lot of people with with similar issue. I am particularly concerned as film cameras have a longer shelf life. I wonder how this internal battery is going to perform over the years. I have a sinking feeling with this. My confidence is already eroded. Thanks to B AND H return policy, I will be returning it and wait to buy it until this issue is resolved hopefully in next releases or versions.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Highly over priced toy. I am a Polaroid collector and instant film enthusiast. I really wanted to love this camera, but as it turns out I am very disappointed with it. The camera at best is a novelty item. The battery life sucks, and and the over-all performance is a joke. The iPhone connect is something they should have left out, and they should of concentrated more on building a good camera with on-board manual settings. It looks good on the shelf, and that is where it will stay. I will just continue using my Polaroid 600 and XS-70 cameras.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from I would give a zero if I could Just got the camera. Will not take a charge at all, will not turn on. Company tech support horrible. Stay away. Do not buy this!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from The Only Camera I Ever Returned I wanted to love this camera. I've shot on a Polaroid 600SE for years but since they stopped making film I thought I'd give Impossible a shot. There were 2 major issues with the camera: 1. There were charing issues. It took me around 7 hours to get a full charge and then once I did, the battery seemed to drain after a few shots. I brought that one back and got a new one. That seemed to fix the charging issues. 2. THERE IS NO WAY TO KNOW IF AN IMAGE IS GOING TO BE IN FOCUS!!! ZERO. You just have to press the shutter and hope. Impossible will tell you that the autofocus works, but it doesn't. If I wanted to have an image in sharp focus, I literally had to break out a measuring tape and measure the distance from lens to subject to make sure I'd have sharp focus where I wanted it. Because of those two issues, mainly the focus issue, I returned it. Couldn't see spending the money on a camera where you're literally guessing on focus. Film is too costly to live that way.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from is it called impossible for a reason? I really wanted to love this camera, since it seems to have so much to love; the tripod mounting, the flash, the original square format, the remote shutter app... I was willing to putting up with all the initial charging issues (it took over 6 hours to charge out of the box), that it doesn't hold a charge for 8 shots, even if you keep the camera off (you might be able to keep a secondary battery pack plugged in), but the last straw was when the charging receptor port in the camera disappeared into the body of the camera entirely rendering even re-charging impossible. It's gotta go back, and I'd really like to replace it since I've invested in 20 pacs of film, but I'm nervous about having the same issues. In theory, it's nicely designed and packaged, but don't expect the same level of product design you'd get from apple.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Cool camera Nifty thing this. Works as a point and shoot but I now just use the fully manual mode on the app to set shutter speed and aperture. Nice to finally have fill control over my instant shots again. Great bit of kit. Highly recommend

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Did not work, right out of the box I will be sending it back to B&H tomorrow as the camera will not hold a charge, even after fully charging it, right out of the box. I should have listened to the previous users comments.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic, but This is the new version of the Sx70 I guess. I don't really understand the critics about this camera. The design is futuristic, battery charged in less than hour, it works 3 fully days with no problem. The App is terrific, the ring flash works incredibly. My only complaint is the viewfinder. Not accurate and difficult to use. The BW film was improved a lot, not much about the color one. My next buy will be the Instant lab. Thanks Impossible for bringing back these idea.
