Venus Optics Laowa 105mm f/2 Smooth Trans Focus Lens for Nikon F
Key Features
  • Nikon F-Mount Lens/FX Format
  • Aperture Range: f/2 (T3.2) to f/22
  • One Apodization Element for Smooth Bokeh
  • Three Low Dispersion Elements
Designed to provide a wealth of control over out-of-focus quality and to enhance bokeh, the Laowa 105mm f/2 Smooth Trans Focus Lens from Venus Optics is a short telephoto prime designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras. The unique optical design incorporates an apodization (APD) element, as well as two separate diaphragms—8- and 14-blade—to provide separate adjustment over the bokeh as well as the exposure and depth of field. This APD element functions as a radially graduated neutral density filter, and as such limits the light transmission to a T-stop value of 3.2, while permitting the depth of field and selective focus qualities of a true f/2 design.

Venus Optics Laowa 105mm f/2 Smooth Trans Foc... Overview

Alongside the unique attributes of the APD element, the lens also incorporates three low dispersion elements and one extra refractive index element to control chromatic aberrations and color fringing, as well as produce a great deal of overall clarity and sharpness. The lens is also characterized by its manual focus, manual aperture design, that provides a wealth of control over focus and exposure to benefit working with the APD element.

Short telephoto prime designed for FX-format Nikon F-mount cameras, this lens can also be used on DX models where it provides a 157.5mm equivalent focal length.
Optical design incorporates an apodization element that helps to improve the quality of bokeh. This element, which resembles a radially graduated ND filter that tapers from clear in the center to more dense around the edges, produces more circular out-of-focus highlights for more pleasing selective focus and shallow depth of field effects.
To control the effect of the apodization element, two separate diaphragms are incorporated in the lens' design: a 14-blade diaphragm that works mainly in conjunction with the APD element to control bokeh, as well as a standard 8-blade diaphragm at the rear of the lens design to control the overall light transmission and affect depth of field.
Due to the incorporation of the APD element, the lens offers an effective light transmission value of T3.2, while the f/2 designation relates mainly toward the potential for selective focus and depth of field control.
Beyond the APD element, the lens also features three low dispersion elements and one extra refractive index element, which combine to limit chromatic aberrations throughout the aperture range and contribute to a high degree of sharpness and clarity.
A manual focus design permits fine-tuned control for focusing as closely as 3' away with a maximum magnification of 0.16x.
Two manual aperture rings enable you to adjust both the exposure-affecting diaphragm as well as the APD-affecting aperture.

Wrong picture of lens

The lens does take great pictures and is great value. What I hated and returned the lens for is its not really designed for e-mount. The pictures shown online are not e-mount versions. E-mount version is much longer. They basically did similar to the 100mm macro lens. They attached a sealed adapter making the lens look weird and long. Even the picture on the box is wrong. Hope they release truly designed for e-mount version.

Unbelievable!

King of bokeh, you can buy all the expensive lens out there but the Laowa 105mm f/2 STF by Venus Optics beats the competitions hands down. This lens is constructed with performance in mind. You set the focus, aperture and the STF manually in fact, this can double as a cine lens. It is heavy, constructed in metal, and very simple to use. The pictures come out bright and sharp with a very pleasing bokeh. I love the lens so much that I'm going to buy other lenses from the same company.

Unique portrait speciality lens

Mostly for portraits. It does have the bokah as other reviews on the web have described. I studied those reviews before buying so I can say I received exactly what I expected and am pleased. Suggest you do the same so you understand what does and its limitations. Keep in mind it's manual only. I think it's at its best when wide open. It's a heavy lens so if I don't need it's special effect, I use lighter optics. To me, it's worth every penny. I'm glad I grabbed it before any possible import tariffs are added.

A balance of in-focus and out-of-focus

The images created by this lens are tack sharp. The bokeh is extremely pleasing when comparing to other portrait lenses I owned. The dual aperture ring is also a bonus for videographer as well. Definitely recommend this little gem to my friends.

Sharp, creamy bokh and easy manual focusing with A7iii However the only drawback is lens is a bit heavy. Otherwise this lens is highly recommended

Using this on my Sony a7rii. to say that this lens is sharp just doesn't cut it. you really can't describe the sharpness in words! Build quality is top notch and it is very easy to manually focus by using the focus peaking & magnification. amazing value!

My main image work is based on using the different out of focus characteristics from many lenses. I have collected nearly 50 lenses during my lifetime to work with as much variety in my expression as possible. Without a doubt, this lens fills a gap in my collection.    Build: the quality is best described as durable. A solid construction overall, with the full feel of a metal-based lens. All parts are working nicely, while I have a copy of this lens here that is a little bit stiffer in its (close distance) focus adjustment. While around 270 degrees, it is nicely distributed, and any distance is not really challenging to focus on.    Aperture: There is some confusion in some reviews around the web. The lens is pretty simple to use, either the T-stop ring is working, or one adjusts the lens with the F-stop ring. I wouldn't put much validity on the label T-stop here. Yes, it is widely here on set with cinema lenses, but the T-stop markings typically indicate a single lens measurement to get the exact value. I assume here that has not happened, and the lens is not calibrated. My idea is here that it was used to differentiate.    To make it simple, open both, and then decide if the lens should work as a standard lens and adjust the F ring, or leave that wide open and use the T-ring for the soft to none soft Bokeh. In the Moment the F-ring is anything but open, the Apodization Effect will be limited strongly.    Apodization: I can't get that softness with any combination of the lens (Canon-L or Sigma Art) and eventual filtration (Tiffen Pearlescent or similar). The effect stands out, as the focus area is very sharp, and helps to sell the softness even more. In comparison to many other lenses that I shot from the same point of view/point of interest, it has outstanding control about chromatic aberration.  In my case, shooting with a Canon 5dm4, the chip on the lens tells the camera that it is on F8, and any exposure is then wrong, except the light hitting the sensor is equal to an F8 result. I taped the lens, as the chip is glued and fixed with a rivet. I wish it would vanish. To have a tape inside the camera feels just weird, and frankly, it is just dangerous. Since this lens performs its primary use at T/F (whatever) 3.2, that would have been the value that the chip should provide, again, why have not two screws to remove it for good? (I contacted B&H, Canon and Venus/Laowa about it).    My main work is based on shooting large resolutions, based on multiple shots, whereby the lens should deliver an even distribution of all qualities for the stitching process. This lens certainly does this.  The lens is quite heavy. It also has a chip that is more or of a pain than of any use for me.    However, these are minor points, as on end, all that matters is the image produced.    All in all, I love this lens.

AMAZING!!!!!

This lens has become my favorite new lens. Bokeh produced from this lens leaves you speechless. Portraits turn out amazing and paired with the Sony a7III couldn’t get easier to get accurate focus.

The Venus Optics Laowa 105mm f/2 Smooth Trans Focus Lens for Pentax K will work on your K1. You would just set the focal length so the body knows how much stabilization it needs to apply to the sensor.

question

Does this manual focus lens have focus confirmation?
Asked by: Jonathan
I have the Canon EF version and it confirms great on my Canon bodies. I also some Sony bodies and using the MC-11 adapter, there is no focus confirmation, although focus peaking works well there. Not sure if there would be focus confirmation with the native Sony FE version of this lens. Works great on Canon though.
