See beyond the restricted color and contrast of conventional monitoring with the SmallHD 1703 HDR 17" Production Monitor. Featuring HDR preview backed by a 8-bit Color Intelligence engine with calibration capabilities, the 1703 can display a large brightness range, encompassing log formats and other expanded-range picture styles. The 1000 cd/m², daylight-viewable, 1920x1080 Full HD resolution display panel can be driven by one of two SDI inputs or an HDMI input. Each input has a loop output for connecting other gear in-line without the need for a splitter. All functionality of this monitor is accessed via the innovative Page Builder OS. By implementing full aluminum construction and the provision for separately available user-replaceable polycarbonate screen protectors, SmallHD built this monitor to survive the rigors of production in studios and in the field.

Page Builder OS
Originally featured in the 500 and 700-series models, and extrapolated for the Production Monitor series, the Page Builder OS is an intuitive graphical user interface (GUI) that puts all of the advanced functionality of the 1703 at your fingertips. Rather than have confusing menus, this GUI allows you to selectively apply monitoring tools such as waveforms, vectorscopes, multiview, and focusing aids to up to 4 different "pages". These pages can be easily flipped through using the joystick. The buttons on the front panel can also toggle monitoring tools on and off for each page.
ColorFlow 3D LUT Processing
In order to keep your images consistent from production through to post-production, ColorFlow allows you to import 3D LUTs and display the treated image side-by-side with the untreated image to correctly gauge exposure while visualizing what is being recorded by the camera. Side-by-side preview can also be used with the HDR preview function. Separate LUT-treated images can be sent downstream over SDI and HDMI so you can have the 1703 display a log image or LUT-treated image, while the director or client monitors connected to the outputs can receive images treated with a different LUT. An image-capture function saves a still frame from the incoming video stream onto an SD card and also records the applied 3D LUT for post-production reference.
Color Intelligence Engine
When a separately available color probe is connected to the monitor via USB, the SmallHD 1703 can automatically adjust a 8-bit 3D calibration LUT for maintaining accurate color reproduction over the life of the monitor.
RapidRail Shoe-Mount System
Quickly secure and detach accessories such as wireless units to the rear of the monitor using standard shoe-mount rails. This saves time over traditional screw-mounted methods and keeps your setup clean and neat. If required these accessories can be powered straight off the monitor using the integrated 12V LEMO power output or the 3 USB ports.
Power Options
Separately available V-mount or Gold-mount battery plates can be attached to the rear of the display. A mounted battery can power the monitor as well as attached accessories through the 12V LEMO connection. The USB ports on the rear of the monitor can also power accessories with a maximum draw of 0.5 amps per port.

1703 HDR 17" Production Monitor is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 4.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Bright but some issues I've had this monitor on my Jimmy Jib for a few months now. The picture is super bright, which is amazing for all of the outdoor shoots. I don't even need a sun shade, it can be seen very well in direct sunlight. I have had an issue with the SDI output not always working/being very finicky. I've been in touch with Small HD for two months about it but they're not taking the issue too seriously. I'm also convinced that the C-Stand mount can be designed better. The way the screw tightens into the C-Stand post, it doesn't allow you to tighten it enough to stop the monitor from spinning with a gentle push. You can't do this with a light on a C-Stand so I'm not sure what they did wrong with their mount but it wont lock in place. All in all, it's a great picture but the finer details need some work.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from WOW ! Great outdoor monitor. We have a lot of outdoor Jib work, and we need something really bright. We were using a 7inch Marshall monitor with 800 nits, which is not bad a all. But, as you may know, most of the time, DOP, Producer are your customers, all want to look at the shoot while you try to operate your Jib ! So, a bigger one was not an option. But there is not a lot of great monitors out there that can stand the sun's brightness, and having a large viewing area at the same time. We were looking for almost a year now, and didn't really find anything that meet our need; till we saw this SmallHD 17inches at NAB 2016. This one is a beast and a must have ! Not only for outdoor job, cause this monitor is packed with a lot, I mean A LOT, of good stuff ! Plus it is more than well made, it's almost indestructible !! (watch their test video on their website if you've not seen it). It's only been a few weeks that we have it, but mounted on our Jonyjib Pro, it's a perfect match ! You can mount a lot on things on it too. Make sure to get a good VESA bracket mount, cause the monitor itelf is almost 13 pounds ! So, if you add so gear, batteries... We have the Matthews Vesa Bracket with the 5/8 stud, so we can fix this monitor on almost any C-stand and other stuff. Which is a good team to hold up this monitor. BE AWARE that there's NO stand included. Pictures show this monitor with an optional stand and an optional 5/8 stud mounting kit. So, it might get confusing seeing those picture and not receiving any stand ! Which I did !!!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Don't waste your $ on this monitor. Buy the new model. This is a great monitor. It doesn't things no other monitor will do. It hasn't a slight magenta look to the picture. When I called SmallHD about it. The you basically said that there was no way to fix it. But that's they were aware of the problem. They recommend I buy their new monitor. The one I hadn't was a little over a year old and they were no longer going Ron support it the way they talked. Work on your customer support SmallHD.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from One of the best field monitors you can buy If you're looking for a monitor that can be battery powered and actually viewable in an outdoor shoot, this is the one. Its also incredibly rugged and perfect for outdoor situations, so its very versatile. The only downside is that its a 8 bit monitor, but most people (clients) won't even be able to notice that bit depth difference.
