SmallHD MON-3203HDR overview

  • 1Description

See beyond the restricted color and contrast of conventional monitoring with the SmallHD 3203 HDR 32" Production Monitor. Featuring true HDR rendering backed by a 10-bit Color Intelligence engine with calibration capabilities, the 3203 can display a large brightness range, encompassing log formats and other expanded-range picture styles. The 1500 cd/m², daylight-viewable, 1920x1080 Full HD resolution display panel can be driven by one of two SDI inputs or an HDMI input. Each input has a loop output for connecting other gear in-line without the need for a splitter. All functionality of this monitor is accessed via the innovative Page Builder OS. By implementing full aluminum construction and the provision for separately available user-replaceable polycarbonate screen protectors, SmallHD built this monitor to survive the rigors of production in studios and in the field. A top handle for carrying and a c-stand mount are included, so you're ready to roll right out of the box.

Page Builder OS
Originally featured in the 500 and 700-series models, and extrapolated for the Production Monitor series, the Page Builder OS is an intuitive graphical user interface (GUI) that puts all of the advanced functionality of the 3203 at your fingertips. Rather than have confusing menus, this GUI allows you to selectively apply monitoring tools such as waveforms, vectorscopes, multiview, and focusing aids to up to 4 different "pages". These pages can be easily flipped through using the joystick. The buttons on the front panel can also toggle monitoring tools on and off for each page.
ColorFlow 3D LUT Processing
In order to keep your images consistent from production through to post-production, ColorFlow allows you to import 3D LUTs and display the treated image side-by-side with the untreated image to correctly gauge exposure while visualizing what is being recorded by the camera. Side-by-side preview can also be used with the true HDR rendering function. Separate LUT-treated images can be sent downstream over SDI and HDMI so you can have the 3203 display a log image or LUT-treated image, while the director or client monitors connected to the outputs can receive images treated with a different LUT. An image-capture function saves a still frame from the incoming video stream onto an SD card and also records the applied 3D LUT for post-production reference.
Color Intelligence Engine
When a separately available color probe is connected to the monitor via USB, the SmallHD 3203 can automatically adjust a 10-bit 3D calibration LUT for maintaining accurate color reproduction over the life of the monitor.
RapidRail Shoe-Mount System
Quickly secure and detach accessories such as wireless units to the rear of the monitor using standard shoe-mount rails. This saves time over traditional screw-mounted methods and keeps your setup clean and neat. If required these accessories can be powered straight off the monitor using the integrated 12V LEMO power output or the 3 USB ports.
Power Options
Separately available V-mount or Gold-mount battery plates can be attached to the rear of the display. A mounted battery can power the monitor as well as attached accessories through the 12V LEMO connection. The USB ports on the rear of the monitor can also power accessories with a maximum draw of 0.5 amps per port.

    SmallHD MON-3203HDR reviews

3203 HDR 32" Production Monitor is rated 5.0 out of 5 by 2.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The BEAUTY and The BEAST SmallHD 3203 HDR is both a beast and a beauty in the same form. The first impression I have for the monitor is the word HEAVY, due to the screen size and the milled aluminum, it does come in at a very heavy weight of over 30lbs and when you consider the protective case you will be transporting it in, then you realize this monitor is not for a one-man shooter or small production. In reality, its meant for mid to big level productions like TVCs, movie sets, multi cam shoots and I think that's where SmallHD designed and targeted the 3203HDR for. Even placing it on C-stand does require some muscle work from a single person, rather I consider it a 2 man job. Talking of C-stand mounting, the screw that's suppose to tighten into the C-Stand post doesn't tighten enough to stop the monitor from panning with a gentle push. The screw isn't doing a great job. Then, the MAJOR snag you are going to hit with this monitor is the power solution, you will need to spend hefty if you want a battery powered solution. However, that's the end of the cons. The moment you turn it on, you are immediately treated with the awesomeness we have all come to love about the usual SmallHD on camera monitors excerpt that this is more of a giant leap. Its like the IMAX of on set monitoring! The only reason I would even consider a sunhood is probably for some sort of privacy which BTW you can't really get on large productions. The monitor is perfectly visible in harsh sunlight. The 10 bit depth does make for very bright and deep color display. Another beautiful thing I love about this monitor is the preset brightness level SmallHD have put in there, once you are indoors, all you need do is select the Studio brightness level via the Backlight button and you there, though I find myself preferring to use the 20% brightness level for studio shoots. But, outside you definitely need 60% and above to enjoy your image. The LUT application is very nice, I even discovered some LUTs are better suited for outdoor monitoring, one of my favorites is the GOPRO LUT that's in-built. This monitor is a perfect fit for situations where the director and the producer need to be monitoring together. The 3203 HDR with its battery solution and transport case is not a cheap investment but I think its going to be one of the best and most secured investment (if one can afford) to make regarding a production equipment. Its built to last, at least from its physical attributes. As at now, I am still discovering the how to put the monitor through its pace. In conclusion: If you are a one man shooter or travel alot/traveling DP, this monitor is NOT for you If you are a production house, this monitor is a MUST have, If you are a rental house, this monitor is an ASSET
