Lightweight Normal Prime
A simple, bright, and lightweight normal-length prime, the FE 50mm f/1.8 from Sony is a versatile lens designed for full-frame E-mount mirrorless cameras. Blending a sleek stature with a versatile focal length, this 50mm prime excels in a variety of shooting situations and the f/1.8 maximum aperture helps straddle an ideal balance between brightness and a compact form factor.
Optical Design
  • One aspherical element is incorporated in the lens design to reduce astigmatism, field curvature, coma, and other monochromatic aberrations.
  • Double-gauss optical configuration helps to reduce field curvature and distortions for more consistent image quality from edge-to-edge.
  • Besides contributing to depth of field control and low-light performance, the bright f/1.8 design also helps to achieve a lightweight and compact profile, making this lens suitable for everyday, walkaround shooting.
  • Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when employing selective focus techniques.
Autofocus and Physical Design
  • DC actuator motor offers quick, quiet, and accurate autofocus performance to suit both stills and video applications.
  • Minimum focusing distance of 1.5' and a 0.15x maximum magnification suit working with nearby subjects.
  • Metal bayonet offers increased durability and a solid feel when mounting the lens.

Fine lens for the price. The focus is slow, which is to be expected. The size is great.

Sharpness is good, everything else is not so great

The overall image quality of this lens is fine, but just fine. The image quality is a tiny step above the 16-50 kit lens. It's sharp across the field and colors (overall) are decent, but compared to the other nifty fifties I've used (Nikon, Canon, Sigma) it just doesn't come close. The AF is loud, crunchy feeling, and slow. The chromatic aberration is TERRIBLE. There's so much magenta fringing all over the image it's essentially unfixable. Why Sony felt this lens was acceptable to sell is beyond me.

Great Value For The Patient

The crux of this lens is the auto-focus. It is slow. You won't be able to photograph anything that involves fast motion, or a lot of times even slow motion while using continuous auto-focus. I knew this before I bought the lens, and it definitely holds true after using the lens. With that out of the way, if you're photographing stationary objects, people, landscapes, flowers, street photography, or focusing manually, I think there's a lot to love about this lens. When you play to its strengths, you can get some really lovely results. Some of my favorite photographs ever have come from this lens. Often from grabbing some candid shots at some local events. I really like the bokeh that I've gotten from shooting wide open with this lens. For the price, I think this lens is a tremendous value. You just have to have the patience to work with the auto-focus shortcomings in some situations. I knew what I was getting into when purchasing this lens, and I only use it in situations that play to its strengths. By doing that, I rarely find myself disappointed with the images I get. If you're ready to learn what this lens likes and doesn't like, I think you can create some amazing images with it. I don't regret purchasing this lens even with the shortcomings. And I think working through the shortcomings is making me a better photographer.

First Impression--not a technical review

I've only had this lens for a couple of weeks and only about 100 shots. I shoot it with a Sony a7iii. First, it's really small and light compared to the other lenses I have--I like that. I got it to travel in Egypt wanting a light lens but one that's very fast as I'll be in tombs and other old sites with limited light. My 85mm seems too telephoto for what I'll be trying to shoot. After my limited shooting I'm pretty sure this was a good buy. The pictures are sharp and capture what I want so I'm pretty sure I'm going to like it for this trip and others. I almost always have some need for a light fast lens on most of my trips.

Can’t go wrong with this tiny little lens. I love it, for taking pictures inside is very good. The quality is a lot better than expected in this price range.

Will this lense work on alpha a6000
Asked by: Rj
Hi Rj,   Sony commitment to customer satisfaction is our top priority.   The SEL50F18F is a full frame lens. It would work with your A6000 camera but there will be a 1.5x crop factor. In addition, to fully benefit with the lens' capabilities, especially with the AF functions, we suggest you update the camera firmware to version 3.21.   Regards Larry Sony Social Support

Asked by: Sujith
Your camera sensor is smaller the the lenses, so you will have no issue on using it. Your camera will work as it was using a 85mm-ish not 'cause of the lens, but cause of the sensor on it. Will work all right, but the image will be tight than if you use this lense in a full frame camera.
