Chimera Fabric Grid Overview

This small, collapsible Chimera Lighttools Fabric Grid limits the light spread of your small Chimera Strip softbox and narrows the beam angle to 40° without affecting softness or color temperature. The strip shape is useful for dramatic, controlled lighting.

An essential accessory for any lighting system, the grid alters the shape and intensity of the light output from your softbox when it is mounted on a light head. Made from fabric and hand stitched, it collapses easily for storage or transport.

Saggy, bows outward

I bought a couple of these with my medium soft boxes from Chimera. Upon first use these grids were moderately loose and floppy, not a huge deal…yet. I soon noticed that if your softbox/fixture is facing any slight amount downward, which they usually are, or fully downward, the middle of the eggcrate sags excessively with gravity, which then causes the light to bow OUTWARD from the cener of the eggcrate. Which equals less light control and rather than a 40° path as advertised, you’ve got more like a 70-90° path of light. It has stretched and worsened over time. 20 shoots later and it’s barely usable. For the price, these should be made better, tighter, and not get looser with use. One solution is to bunch & A-clamp the corners to add tension to the fabric grid, but probably the more ideal solution is to get Chimera’s E-ZPop version that provides tension across and hence doesn’t sag. But they’re even more ridiculously priced (@ $500).

The grid is a universal 1x1 fabric grid and can be used in many softboxes. If the softbox you have is 1x1 then there is a good chance this will fit as long as the softbox can take a grid.

While this grid would only fit the Chimera 1650 and 1670 lightbanks, the Litepanels 40 Grid for Astra 1x1 and Hilio D12/T12 Snapbag B&H # LIG40SBA1X1 would fit the DoPChoice Snapbag Softbox.
