Zoom U-44 overview

  • 1Description

The U-44 from Zoom is a compact, 4-in/4-out audio interface with 48V phantom power that provides all of the essential tools you need for recording and performing high-resolution, 24-bit/96 kHz audio anywhere you go. It can be used to connect to your Mac or Windows computer, or iPad* via USB, to record with mics, instruments, and more.

The U-44 interface uses the same high-quality, low-noise preamps as the Zoom H5 and H6 handy recorders. It features two TRS/XLR combo jacks for inputs, in/out S/PDIF Optical Toslink and S/PDIF Coaxial on RCA, MIDI In/Out, two TRS 1/4" unbalanced jack outputs, RCA line-level outputs and a standard stereo headphone jack. In addition, it is powered by two AA batteries, providing up to four hours of continuous operation with phantom power turned off. The U-44 includes a download code for Ableton Live 9 Lite software to get you started right away.

Purchasers can also register for a free download of a special version of Pro Tools | First, which contains a valuable collection of twenty-one AAX audio software plug-ins.

The World is Your Studio
Wherever you want to record, the bus-powered U-44 forms the perfect centerpiece of your mobile studio. Connect instruments, monitors, and other devices when you're recording at home, or hook it up to your iPad* to make music on the go. If bus power isn't available, the U-44 can run on just two AA batteries, allowing you to record anywhere.

* Requires two AA batteries or optional AC adapter for power, plus an Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit or Lightning-to-USB Camera Adapter for connection to iPad.
Zoom 10-Pin Connector
Thanks to its 10-pin Zoom connector, the U-44 is compatible with all of our interchangeable input capsules (sold separately), representing a powerful field-recording setup. Choose from six capsules—X/Y, Shockmount X/Y, Mid-Side, Shotgun, Stereo Shotgun, and Dual XLR/TRS Combo Input—each with its own unique application. Record the audience during your live performance, or connect our SSH-6 Stereo Shotgun for dialogue and sound design on your latest film project.
Pristine Recording and Playback
Inspired by the Zoom H-series recorders, the U-44 is equipped with high-performance, low-noise mic preamps (-119.5 dB EIN) that enable recording and playback at resolutions up to 24-bit/96 kHz. You can also use U-44 as a studio-quality headphone amp and listen to your favorite music in full fidelity.
Get Connected with the U-44
The U-44 features a full array of inputs and outputs so you'll always be prepared. Two combo inputs with independent gain knobs and multi-color level indicators provide flexibility for connecting mics, keyboards, and mixers. 48V phantom power can be supplied to inputs 1 and 2, and input 1 supports Hi-Z input for connecting passive guitars, basses, and other instruments. MIDI I/O enables you to use electronic keyboards, controllers, synthesizers, and drum machines.
Multiple Output Options
Multiple output options—including 1/4", RCA, and S/PDIF—allow you to connect DJ mixers, speakers, and more. Monitoring your mixes is easy thanks to a dedicated headphone output with independent volume control. The direct-monitor knob makes it possible to blend your headphone mix between the input and playback signals—perfect for live electronic music performance and DJ'ing.
Control Your Mix
With advanced monitoring options, the U-44 lets you dial in the perfect mix with zero latency. Create a balanced headphone mix between your click-track and main-out signals during live performances, or balance the cue and main out signals when you're DJ'ing.
Stand-Alone AD/DA Conversion
When you're transferring audio, high-quality AD/DA conversion is critical. The U-44 functions in stand-alone mode as a high-quality mic preamp and AD/DA converter to ensure complete transparency when converting audio formats. You can choose between a 44.1 and 48 kHz sampling rate for conversion.
Feature-Rich Mobile Recording
The U-44 is small enough to carry in your jacket pocket or backpack without sacrificing features. Plus, all of the connectors and knobs are strategically positioned for fast access.
Create More with Your U-44
When you combine the U-44 with Ableton Live 9 Lite, you have everything the modern music creator needs. Record your tracks quickly and intuitively, enhancing them with studio-quality effects like EQ, compression, reverb, delay, chorus, filter, and more.

    Zoom U-44 reviews

U-44 Handy 4-In/4-Out Audio Interface is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 8.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very convenient &flexible. Pretty good little digital. interface, converter, mixer etc.. very flexible, portable. When not used as a primary portablestudio mixer in stand alone mode trying to use as a portable spdif to analog DAC for non digital amplifier. Very H6, microphone capsules fit, (I like their sound) , not covered in rubber coating like H6, regardless by George I like it!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Swiss Army Knife of Interfaces ZOOM U44 When Zoom announced this weird gooney bird of an interface, my first reaction was 'Who's going to want this?' Apparently, me. In an effort to minimize my various gear into one overall cohesive unit, I've found that the U44 is sort of a Swiss Army Knife interface capable of most scenarios I throw at it. As an iOS musician, the fact I can power the interface and the iPad with the newer version camera connector is absolute gold. I should add, I bought three accessories (XLR attachment, stereo mic capsule, extension cord) to basically round out all my requirements. As an interface, I connect a keyboard with its MIDI connections and any mics. As a performance device, my guitar into it utilizing the iPad as my tone generator and using the blend knob to dial out latency. And finally, when recording bands, I attach the stereo mic to the extension cable and take a feed from the board as well. All from the same battery operated unit into my iOS device. For video, I take the RCA out to the camera as video apps would only recognize the first two tracks only via the USB, and the stereo mic is on 3/4. But an analog RCA out would capture all inputs, you just have to be aware of the mix. I wish the unit had a threaded camera mount adapter on the bottom so I could mount it much like a H5 or H6 but it's a minor quibble. As of this writing, the accessory to mount to the side of a mic stand is not available. The knobs have a smooth light resistance feel which doesn't feel cheap (unlike say the iQ7 knob). The preamps are quiet (enough) for my applications, but don't expect some totally high-end dead-quiet inputs. But it's nothing bad by any stretch. You get what you pay for. In other words, totally acceptable. I'm still getting used to the interface. It's nice to know that any new ideas I have don't require me running out to the local music store for another piece of outboard gear, but more about how to configure the U-44 with what I already use. Recommended.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Zoom U-44 Interface Review I own quite a few Zoom products and I am happy with all of them. This product is exactly what I needed, small, portable, flexible and expandable. It frees me up to work on my iPad when the wife is using the laptop. The reason for a 4 and not 5 star review is the overall feel of the product. It seems a tiny, tiny bit flimsy with anemic lights/indicators. Outside of those small irritants I love it. Great product!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Zoom comes through again ! Zoom comes through again. I have over the years purchased many audio interfaces from Roland Tascam Edirol and Cakewalk also Zoom. I must say Zoom is by far way ahead of the others in producing a low cost high quality interface for the home recording industry. I do a fair bit of traveling and on leaving town this time I forgot to pack an interface for my stay. As a rule I would carry a Zoom R8 or R16 or one of the other portables I have. I elected to order a Zoom U-44 from B7H and I'm happy I did. Their service was prompt and shipping was without an issue. I received my product on time as promised. With regard to the Zoom U-44. I'm really pleased with this unit to say the least. I has Win 10 x64 and x32 drivers. Its both an analog and digital unit. Best of all it can be used stand alone as a preamp using battery power. The U-44 sound quality is exceptional and I would say equal to their R8 and R16 units. This unit works well with all my DAWs including Sonar Reason Fl Studio Reaper etc. One thing I must say that Zoom has going for it is continued driver support. Again I have several Zoom units and all have Win 10 drivers available. Wish I could say that for my really expensive Roland and Novation equipment great gear but short support life. I recommend this unit for anyone wanting a good quality audio midi interface with digital ins and outs. It is really great bang for my buck. John, Home Studio Producer

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great product/Fair price. Great piece of audio gear at a fair price. I use it to interface with some video equipment and it works great as a middleware connection between audio equipment and cameras like the BlackMagic Design Pocket Camera.
