Atoch C2S overview

  • 1Description

The C2S CFast to SSD Solution from Atoch allows users of the 4K & 4.6K versions of the Blackmagic URSA and URSA Mini, as well as the URSA Mini Pro, to record footage captured by their camera directly onto SSDs, as compared to CFast cards. Operating as a "digital bulk loader," the C2S has two 2.5" / 9.5mm SATA drive bays, each of which is equipped with a wired CFast adapter that plugs directly into each of the CFast card slots on the URSA, URSA Mini, or URSA Mini Pro. Each 2.5" drive bay supports SSDs up to 2TB, for a total storage capacity of 4TB, or the equivalent of 16 x 256GB CFast cards. Not only will the C2S negate the need to carry around multiple CFast cards, users will also be able to swap out drive media less frequently, as larger capacity SSDs are a more cost-effective purchase than CFast cards.

In dual card mode, the C2S supports up to 4.6K RAW recording at 60 fps. In single card mode, the C2S is able to record compressed RAW video at any resolution at all available compression levels, which are 3:1 for the 4K sensor and both 3:1 and 4:1 for the 4.6K sensor, as well as all available resolutions and frame rates of Apple ProRes. Additionally, when used with Atoch's recommended SSDs, the C2S supports a greater maximum data rate than the 4.6K version of the URSA and URSA Mini are designed to output.

The Atoch C2S has helped to trim costs and streamline post-production workflows for many projects. This device is powered using the included D-Tap to DC cable and for those who wish to use 7mm SSDs within the C2S' 9.5mm drive bays, two SSD spacers are also included.

General Features

In-Camera SSD Control
Use your camera's user interface to format, record, and playback your footage just like you would with a CFast card. Even though CFast card sizes are limited, your URSA, URSA Mini, or URSA Mini Pro won't know the difference between your inserted SSDs and a CFast card inside the camera, even all the way up to 2TB
Universal Ergonomics
With a 0.25" threaded mount on the underside of the Atoch C2S, it can be mounted as easily as almost any field monitor or external recorder. And with the use of a magic arm, the Atoch C2S can be swung around to nearly any position around the camera for improved ease of use for virtually any shooting circumstance. No need to permanently make your camera longer or wider, possibly making your shooting experience unwieldy, or causing issues on a gimbal. With your choice of magic arm or ball mount, your Atoch C2S is configurable to your specific shooting style
Universal Power
The Atoch C2S takes 12-24V directly and Atoch supplies a D-Tap cable so users can connect it directly to their battery or battery plate; whether you use Gold Mount or V-Lock batteries, the Atoch C2S can be powered with ease. With an LED-verified power switch, users can also see when their Atoch C2S is functioning properly, and even switch it off to save power
Fanless Cooling
Designed with audio in mind, the Atoch C2S helps keep your SSDs cool by allowing natural air to pass over and under your drives. There is no need for any additional power drain from powering noisy fans
Secure Drive Grip
Inside of the Atoch C2S is a SATA connector which grips SSDs tightly and without risking damage to its pins. There is no need to worry about SSDs falling out or remounting them when they've been jostled or bumped on set. The Atoch C2S is well suited for run and gun productions
URSA Mini Pro
Both CFast ports on the URSA Mini Pro are compatible with the C2S using Western Digital Blue SSDs, SanDisk Ultra 3D DDSs (not SanDisk Ultra II), and Digistor Professional Video SSDs.

    Atoch C2S reviews

C2S CFast to SSD Solution for Blackmagic URSA, URSA Mini, and URSA Mini Pro (4K & 4.6K) is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 16.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works Awesome. Even with 4K RAW I've been a black magic cinema camera (2.5k) user for a few years and recently upgraded to the Ursa. I loved everything about the Ursa except for the cfast cards. So I was super excited to find the Atoch solution. It works perfectly. I've shot about 55 productions with it and never had an issue. I had a few questions about the best way to mount it on the camera and asked on their Facebook page for suggestions and they were very prompt answering. If you are ready for a pro level mount and the much cheaper price of SSDs this is the obvious choice!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Media Solution for URSA Mini 4.6 I just returned from NAB 2016 and had the privilege of using this unit for all of my coverage recording on my URSA Mini 4.6K. It was incredibly easy to mount onto my camera rig and use. Once you find a good mounting point for it, it does it's job and you forget it is even there. Any piece of gear I can plug in and leave to do it's thing without fussing with is a major bonus. I was able to record almost 500GB of 4K ProRes footage each day without ever needing to stop to offload media. I would not have been able to do this with my 128GB CFast cards. The build is solid and the SSDs fit in snugly, so there is no concern of having media become disengaged in the middle of a shot. It was easy to power off of an available D-tap port on my rig, all I had to do was switch it on and start shooting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Buy It! I have the first generation of this product. It works and it works great! I also bought BlueShape's P-Tap-to-USB power adapter for connection between battery and this device. This is a great $$ saver for the BMD Ursa Camera line because you record to 2.5 SSD Drives instead of using expensive C-Fast Cards. After you're done recording, just pop the drive out and into a 2.5 SATA to USB 3.0 Drive Dock (or better yet USB 3.1). Copy the ProRes or RAW files over to your editing PC or Mac quickly and painlessly. Highly recommended!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredibly reliable & best accessory I bought for URSA Mini! I bought the Atoch C2S to use in the trenches on an independent feature & just wrapped principal photography (the film is Flesh and Blood - you can look it up on IMDB). LET ME FIRST SAY THAT THIS IS BY FAR ONE OF THE MOST RELIABLE PIECES OF PRODUCTION EQUIPMENT I'VE EVER OWNED! For 4 weeks straight we beat the snot out of it, 7 days a week shooting nonstop with it attached to our URSA Mini 4.6K shooting 4.6K RAW recording at least 2TB of RAW footage per day onto Samsung Pro SSDs. The Atoch C2S is built like a tank - we shot in waist deep snow, rain, 80 degree heat and it never dropped a single frame or had any problems at all with it which is nothing short of amazing in the world of production. We had 8 x 512GB Samsung Pro SSDs that we rotated through which allowed us to keep a smooth DIT workflow & not worry about having to constantly clear cards. We never could have afforded to do this with CFast 2 cards - it would have been outrageously expensive. If you want to verify and see pics of it in action you can check out Inner7studios Instagram feed. **As a side note I've since begun using the Atoch C2S on a documentary where I'm shooting RAW as well as 120fps RAW in a run n gun fashion and it's been AWESOME. Just had it up above 10,000ft at Mt. Baldy for a shoot & it performed flawlessly. I can't wait to do long interviews w/out worrying about running out of card space.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Power switch broke - can't turn it on. Great idea. But this implementation is flawed. It's made with cheap parts and glue. Power switch broke (stuck in off position) after barely any use and impossible to turn it back on or repair it without destroying it because it's all amatuerishly glued together. Much cheaper and better to buy the CFAST Breakout Cables ($140 for two) and a 5V SATA power supply ($20) and make your own box at 1/4 the price.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Why would you not? As an indie filmmaker, cost is always a deterrent. And when it comes to the Ursa Mini, the biggest deterrent for us was storage. Enter Atoch, which cuts our cost to a 1/4 of Cfast2. From a cost perspective, this is a no brainer. From a functionality perspective, I have absolutely nothing to complain about. And I'm scrutinous. I'll be the first to return something I don't like. It mounts easily wherever you want it, and it's robust, I'm not sure exactly the material, but it's that high impact plastic stuff. I'm, 4TB worth of RAW data into Atoch usage, and I've yet to drop a frame or experience any issue of any kind. I can't imagine shooting with Cfast, it would cost us too much. I can't really live without Atoch, frankly. If I was searching for a complaint, I would recommend to the producers of this fine device to design an SSD caddy for Atoch, so you don't get any flapping picked up by onboard mics. The spacers aren't quite enough to dampen this. But that is certainly not worth a half star deduction. This is a 5er all the way.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great product. If you don't care about the extra weight, It's a great product. I don't have buy expensive CF cards. I bought two extra SSD cards and shooting at 4k is a breeze. I never run out of space. It only need a cover for it and I found one online. I'm good. Thank you B&H.
