Blackmagic Design UltraStudio 4K Extreme 3
Key Features
  • 40 Gbps Thunderbolt 3 & PCIe I/O
  • Advanced 4K 60p RGB/Stereoscopic Ingest
  • 12G-SDI, HDMI 2.0, Analog Connections
  • 4-Ch XLR and 2-Ch AES/EBU Audio
A faster upgrade to its predecessor, the UltraStudio 4K Extreme, Blackmagic Design UltraStudio 4K Extreme 3 is built with a Thunderbolt 3 interface, which features a 40 Gbps transfer rate that better supports 4K ingest when working in RGB or stereoscopic formats. The super high speed of Thunderbolt 3 is fast enough for the highest bit depth HDR uncompressed RGB 4K and stereoscopic formats, such as those used for high end feature films. Like the previous model, UltraStudio 4K Extreme 3 still offers PCIe, 12G-SDI, HDMI 2.0, and analog connections, 4:4:4 sampling, and real-time H.265 encoding. It supports 4K DCI and UHD footage in up to 60 fps.

Will this device present all its inputs and ...

Will this device present all its inputs and outputs to my software (Wirecast) simultaneously like an internal capture card would? I heard somewhere that it does not work like a traditional capture card and that only one input at a time is available to the software using the device.
Asked by: Chad
Most capture cars work this way. Only one input is available at a time. You need one specifically designed for mult-input.

PC connectivity via Blackmagic PCIe Cable Kit. ...

PC connectivity via Blackmagic PCIe Cable Kit. Does the 4K Extreme 3 perform well when connected to a PC via the PCIe cable kit? Looking for the best option for 4K HDR workflow. I like this unit since it looks like it would retain the HDR metadata in the HDMI stream, thus triggering HDR mode on my consumer-grade HDR TV. Monitoring with Samsung QN900A HDR TV (single HDMI input).
Asked by: Chris
Yes the UltraStudio 4K Extreme performs well via PCIe to a computer.

Previous models of this device have had extremely loud internal cooling fans. Much too loud for use in a quiet studio. Has this issue been resolved with this new release? Thanks!
Asked by: Padhrig M.
So far we have no reports on noise level for this model.

Down conversion via SDI? Will this provide ...

Down conversion via SDI? Will this provide simultaneous down conversion of 4K to HD via the SDI outs? I see on the tech specs in "Processing" area it states "UHD down conversion. Built in, hardware converter outputs UHD to HD on SDI outputs C&D. Just want to confirm I could have 4K out via the HDMI, and then down convert to HD using SDI C or D.
Asked by: Chris
Yes you can. The UltraStudio Extreme 4K is capable of outputting 4K via HDMI, and down-converting to HD over SDI simultaneously.

Can this record 4 SDI inputs all at the same time?
Asked by: Andrew
No, you can only record 1 video signal at the same time. If you input a 4K quad-link SDI signal using the 4 SDI ports, the UltraStudio will see it as 1 video signal.

question

Is this compatible with the 2016 MacBook Pro via Thunderbolt 3? (There are many Thunderbolt 3 devices which are unsupported due to their use of older Thunderbolt 3 chipsets.)
Asked by: William
I'm using a late 2016 MacBook Pro (touch bar) using Thunderbolt 3. It does not connect. The Blackmagic software does not detect the device. OS X System Information does not list any device as connected via thunderbolt.
