SMX-30 Stereo/Mono Switchable Video Mic & Furry Windshield Cover Kit Overview

The Azden SMX-30 Stereo/Mono Switchable Video Mic & Furry Windshield Cover Kit from B&H includes a battery-powered Azden SMX-30 shotgun-style microphone with a 1/8" stereo mini jack, a foam windscreen, and an Azden SWS-30 furry windshield cover. It can be used on DSLRs and other compact cameras for capturing audio in outdoor and indoor environments.

Housed inside an innovative casing, the SMX-30 is actually two microphones packaged into one. It consists of two cardioid-polar-pattern mic elements spaced apart at a 120° angle for capturing a natural-sounding stereo image. The mono microphone uses a supercardioid polar pattern to focus on sound in front of the camera and has the same element as Azden's SGM-250 shotgun microphone to record broadcast-quality sound.

Furthermore, the furry windshield cover was designed to provide maximum protection against wind noise and is made to slip over the included SMX-30's foam windscreen. It delivers acoustically transparent results.

Azden SMX-30 Stereo/Mono Switchable Video Microphone

The SMX-30 Stereo/Mono Switchable Video Microphone from Azden is a battery-powered microphone with separate stereo and shotgun-style microphone units that can be switched between mono and stereo recording modes. It can be used to produce pro-quality sound for DSLRs and other compact cameras in applications for interviews, weddings, presentations, and more.

Housed inside an innovative casing, the SMX-30 is two microphones packaged into one. The stereo microphone is positioned at the top and consists of two cardioid polar patterns spaced apart at a 120° angle. The mono microphone uses a supercardioid polar pattern to focus on sound in front of the camera. It has the same high-quality element as Azden's SGM-250 shotgun microphone.

Using the built-in +20 dB gain booster to get a strong clean audio signal into your camera, the SMX-30 minimizes the need to turn up noisy preamps usually associated with DSLRs, and also includes a -10 dB pad to protect against distortion when recording in loud environments such as live concerts and motorsport events.

Furthermore, the microphone has a wide frequency response of 40 Hz to 20 kHz and has a full, natural sound. There is a low-cut filter switch for reducing low frequencies below 120 Hz, which is useful for mitigating noise caused by air conditioners, wind, and traffic.

Powered by two AA batteries, you can operate the SMX-30 microphone for approximately 24 hours with no degradation of sound quality. The battery-indicator LED light lets you know when it's time to change batteries with up to a 1-hour warning beforehand.

Finally, an integrated shock-absorbing shoe mount isolates the SMX-30 microphone from camera-motor/handling noise. The mount is designed to fit the standard camera shoe and comes with 1/4"-20 threads at the bottom for mounting to boom poles and other camera accessories. A foam windscreen and a carry pouch are also included.

Stereo or Mono? Why Choose?

If you only have the budget to buy one microphone for your camera, why should you have to choose between mono and stereo? The SMX-30 is stereo/mono switchable.

Gain Control

The audio controls on DSLR cameras are limited, if they exist at all. And DSLRs are notoriously known to have low-quality microphone preamps that add noise to the video soundtrack when the gain is turned up. Azden's SMX-30 has a +20 dB gain booster so you can get a strong, clean audio signal into your camera, minimizing the need to turn up the noisy preamp.

Frequency Response

The SMX-30 has a wide frequency response ranging from 40 Hz to 20 kHz, so the audio you capture will sound full and natural.

Power

Powered by two AA batteries, which is a lower-cost option than the 9V battery used in some competitor microphones, the SMX-30 can achieve 24 hours of operation with a single set of batteries with absolutely no degradation of sound quality.

Maximize Battery Life

Maximize battery life by using the unique "Auto" power setting. When set to Auto, the SMX-30 can detect when a camera is on and will automatically power on and off with the camera (requires a mic input that provides plug-in power). Ever leave your microphone on by accident to discover that the batteries are dead the next time you try to use it? Eliminate that possibility by always leaving the SMX-30 in "Auto" mode.

Integrated Shock-Absorbing Shoe Mount

Integrated into the design of the SMX-30 is a custom-made, shock-absorbing shoe mount to isolate the microphone from camera-motor/handling noise.

SMX-30 Stereo/Mono Switchable Video Mic & Furry Windshield Cover Kit Reviews

Does the job well!

After many years of using the onboard terrible mics on cameras, I decided to invest in a real tool for the job. The stereo/directional combo was unique out of all the quality mics out there and made this a no brainer for me. I tested this mic at the racetrack and I'm very happy with how it reproduced some very loud engine sounds. Put on headphones to get the best effect. https://youtu.be/CkSll8JnJn8

WOW, what a great, versitile mic. I love that you can switch from stereo to shotgun on the fly. Turn off your in camera recording gain and set the Azden SMX30 to +20dB for amazing, clean recordings. Investing in the furry wind screen gives great quality even on on a windy day.

Nice mic for DSLR

I purchased this for use on a new Pentax K3. I did some field testing with 2 sopranos, at about 15 foot distance, using the stereo xy mics vs the mono shotgun mic, and even with two singers closely positioned, the greater ambience of the xy mic is apparent. The mono mic had the same quality of sound, just located in the center of the sound field and without depth. The +20db boost feature at that distance with 2 voices was almost too much for the camera input, setting the camera record level at 3 to prevent saturation (the upper range is 20), and setting the mic to +0db allowed me to raise the camera input to 8 and the sound quality was indistinguishable. For other settings, the +20db output of the mic will be an excellent feature.

Nice to have stereo and mono

Overall I really like this mic and the stereo/mono feature. I am still working on finding its sweet spot for distance and mic amp ratio. The audio without the +20 dB seems lower than I expected. I've already shot a few videos with it and I like the quality of the sound once I amplify it in post.

Revised with removable 3.5mm cable!

Initially, I was expecting to buy 3 mics: shotgun, stereo, and usb mic. Now I can accomplish what I need to do with one lightweight mic. The stereo mic sounds great, even slightly better than the Zoom H1. I don't have much experience with shotgun mics but it sounds better than the Rode video mic. I also bought a 3.5mm trrs splitter and can now use the mic on my computer so this eliminates the need for a heavy USB mic. The one drawback is that a computer's mic input is mono so it won't record in stereo mode. Also I don't know when the removable 3.5mm cable revision occurred because it doesn't seem to be advertised anywhere but I'm impressed with this Azden SMX-30. Thanks B&H

Great combo-mic, excellent stereo sound.

The sound quality of both the Stereo and Mono features of this mic are top-notch whether recording inside or outside. The Stereo mode is great if you want to pick up ambient sound or capture natural sounds like birds, rain or thunder. The Mono mode is good for on-camera voice recording or vlogging. Replaceable batteries are a big plus but the +/- symbols in the battery compartment are almost impossible to read so be careful when replacing the batteries. The other not-so-great feature is the integrated cable. The cable is just long enough to plug in when the mic is mounted on the camera, if you need to remote mount the mic you will need a separate extension cable. This would be a five-star rating if there was a removable cable AND readable +/- indicators on the battery door.

Great features and good sound

Used the Azden SMX-30 with a Panazonic FZ1000M2 on a trip to Europe where video was mostly outdoors in mostly congested places...this microphone did a stellar job. Being able to set audio up or down depending on the situation was a great plus, and having the microphone se to automatically turn on and off with the camera really saved on battery life. Also having stereo and mono in one microphone system allowed changing to whichever worked best for the situation as simple as flipping a switch. I couldn't be more pleased and would recommend this microphone to anyone.

Will it work with Black Magic Pocket 4K?
Asked by: Rafael
Yes, the SMX-30 will work with the BMPCC 4K but must be plugged into the 3.5mm mic input jack (not the mini-XLR input). Furthermore, you will have to adjust the audio settings to use the 3.5mm mic input. The auto-on feature will work when set up properly. You will need to find a third party mounting solution since the BMPCC lacks a traditional cold-shoe mount. Using a camera cage with a shoe mount would be one option. The SMX-30 has a 1/4"-20 female thread at the bottom, so using a thread adapter would be a second option.
