Nektar Technology GX 49 Overview

The GX49 from Nektar is 49-key USB MIDI keyboard controller featuring a pitch-bend wheel, modulation wheel, and footswitch socket. Two multi-colored octave buttons enable shifting the keyboard range by -3 or +4 octaves, with the LED colors showing exact status. Additionally an assignable potentiometer provides control over any MIDI parameter, which by default controls mixer volume.

Eight buttons provide DAW control, and when combined with Nektar DAW Integration, extend functionality to include control over transport and a host of other important DAW functions. The buttons can also be assigned to MIDI messages for use with any MIDI software that's not supported by Nektar DAW Integration. A primary and a secondary message, accessed via the shift button, can be programmed for each of seven buttons, delivering a total of fourteen programmable options.

Each of the fourteen assignable MIDI buttons, the modulation wheel, footswitch, and the big control knob can be assigned to send out MIDI CC messages. The assignable buttons can additionally be configured to send out a program message or MMC transport control. Transport controls with the ability to go to and set locators, track navigation, volume control, launching windows and patch navigation are also available. Nektar Technology GX 49 Reviews

Solid value. Does the job.

You have to factor in the price point. With that in mind it's a superb MIDI controller. Integrates flawlessly with Studio One now Studio Pro. Some reviewers and videos complained about key noise. I just have to say that I've used a lot of controllers and there's nothing remarkable about the key noise at all.

Better than expected

I was looking for a synth action controller to replace my old Korg Wavestation, which is, in my opinion, the best synth action ever. Is not for everyone, though, since is so light, you can fly on lead passages, but is not very comfortable for pianos or organs. But the problem is that, since is a fully fledged synth, is big and heavy. Not really practical to move it around gigs. Anyway, to my amazement, the Nektar action is so light and smooth, not at all plasticky or spongy as many other controllers I've tried, that I can now put my trusty to Wavestation rest. As a plus, is very light and small overall, as much as I can fit both my main controller (M-Audio Code 61) and the Nektar on the same SKB hard case, how convenient is that? Build quality is top notch. Can't talk about long term, since I've only used it for a few weeks, but looks and feels very well built, it doesn't squeak when squeezed, buttons and dials are great and responsive, configuring it is a breeze, and it does have a multi function plug for either a sustain or expression pedal. That is very nice to me, since I'll be adding another expression pedal to control my left hand, while I use the other for the left. In a nutshell, I believe the Nektar GX49 is without doubt the best sub 100$ 49 key controller in the market.

This unit does not include a sustain pedal. Here's a recommendation for a sustain pedal B&H # AUFPP1L.

With the 49 key, I want to program the first 10 keys as shortcuts in Musescore, so I'm wondering if there is there a way to acces an octave below or up?
Asked by: Keith
There are octave up and octave down buttons that will shift the keyboard one, two or three octaves lower and one, two, three or four octaves higher. Here is a link to the user manual - see page 5 for the information regarding octaves and transposing: https://www.bhphotovideo.com/lit_files/617697.pdf

CAN I USE HEADPHONES WITH IT?
Asked by: C
No, this is a controller only and there are no sounds in it to hear. You will monitor audio via your device's headphone output (computer/iPad).
