Canon 28mm f/3.5 overview

  • 1Description

A compact prime designed for macro photography, the EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM from Canon is a 44.8mm-equivalent lens designed for APS-C-format EF-M-mount mirrorless cameras. Characterized by its 1.2x maximum magnification and 3.7" minimum focusing distance, this sleek lens is further distinguished by its integrated Macro Lite LED to provide additional illumination to close-up subjects. Aiding its ability to reproduce small subjects at greater than life size, the optical design incorporates one UD element and two aspherical elements to reduce chromatic and spherical aberrations in order to provide a high degree of sharpness and clarity.

Benefitting the optical attributes is a Hybrid IS image stabilization system that serves to minimize the appearance of camera shake for sharper results when working handheld and in difficult lighting conditions. A lead screw-type STM stepping motor also benefits handling by producing fast, smooth, and quiet autofocus performance to suit both stills and video applications. This AF motor can be manually overridden at any time by turning the dedicated focusing ring for making fine-tuned adjustments. Additionally, suiting the sleek stature of the Canon EOS M-series of cameras, this lens also sports a lightweight form factor and retractable design.

A normal-length prime, this macro lens is designed for EF-M-mount APS-C-format mirrorless cameras and provides a 44.8mm equivalent focal length.
One Ultra Low Dispersion element is used to control chromatic aberrations and two aspherical elements are also featured, including one double-sided aspherical element, to minimize spherical aberrations for increased clarity and sharpness.
A maximum magnification of 1.2x is afforded for slightly greater-than-life size shooting at a minimum focusing distance of 3.7" using the Super Macro setting.
The built-in front-facing Macro Lite LED can be used to provide additional illuminations to subjects when working at close distances. The light can be configured to illuminate only the right or left side, or both sides, in order to produce greater visual depth and reduce shadows caused by the close proximity of the lens to the subject.
Hybrid IS image stabilization minimizes the appearance of camera shake for sharper imagery when shooting handheld.
Lead-screw-type STM stepping motor offers fast, quiet, smooth, and accurate autofocus performance that is ideal for video recording as well as still shooting.
Full-time manual focus mode (AF+MF) lets you instantly switch to manual focus control in AF mode for making fine-tuned adjustments.
Compact and lightweight overall form factor is aided by a retractable design for a more sleek profile during travel and storage. Additionally, the acute lens top shape, which is narrower than the main lens body, also helps to prevent casting shadows on close-up subjects.
Included lens hood is threaded to accept 43mm filters.

    Canon 28mm f/3.5 reviews

EF-M 28mm f/3.5 Macro IS STM Lens is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is a very nice lens Fit & finish are very good, controls work nicely; on par w/ other M lenses. Lens was tried on 2 M bodies and an M3. Lens worked correctly on all. In informal testing; all distances down to macro; performance was very good. Macro: short length (28mm) required getting very close to object. I could not get good results hand holding, but using tripod results were very good. The LED lights are a nice feature. Glad Cannon included a lenshade/adapter. 43mm dia is same as 22mm lens, so filters, etc can be shared. not sure how much shade is provided, but a 43mm threaded hood could be used if needed.. All in all a very versatile lens, excellent value. Makes a nice carry around package.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice macro lens This is a nice lens, well constructed and light weight. When using it on very small objects, I attach it to a GorrilaPod, which allows the camera and lens positioned in almost any position. In the 'super macro' mode, it will focus down very close to the subject. It is sharp and the two, built-in LED lamps in the lens housing are an asset. It is very sharp and easy to use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice little Macro Lens I purchased this lens to use on my Canon M5 Mirror less camera, and it is a perfect match. It is small, lightweight, and easy to use. Although it is not an EOS L lens, it does a very good job of taking sharp macro photos using it handheld in the distance mode or on a tripod in the close-up macro mode. The built in light is only good for real close objects that are not reflective, otherwise you will see the reflections of the lights. The lens hood is rather small and covers the the built in led lights so they cannot be used with the hood on. Overall it is a good value for a macro lens that can also focus out to infinity for landscape work. I am happy with it. BK

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Value Macro I purchased this lens as aa alternative to shooting detail shots of rings during wedding photography. Typically I use the 5DIII with the 100mm f/2.8 L. Why the down-grade: 1) I want to shoot Macro shots with a wider perspective. The EF-M 28mm on the M3 has the equivalent angle of view as a 45mm lens on a full frame. 2) Time & hassle of changing lenses and settings on my 5DIII. I'd rather just grab a camera that's ready to take Macro shots. Important note: the weight of the M3 + EF-M 28 (500g) is lighter than carrying the 100mm f/2.8 lens (625g) in my gear bag. Although, I carry both still. 3) Having LED lights built into the lens front is a great feature, either as the main light or as fill. 4) DOF and aperture: with a crop sensor, the DOF doesn't get so shallow. Circle of confusion stuff. Basically, at the same focal distance (lens), aperture, and sensor to subject distance: a crop sensor will have a greater DOF. For me this is a plus. Using the 100mm f/2.8 I need to shoot at f/8.0 or greater to get a usable DOF. This is dark. Indoors, I must tax ISO to get a decent shutter speed to shoot hand held. With the M3 + the EF-M 28mm I can get a similar DOF at f/3.5 (a huge light advantage). Furthermore, because this is a 28mm vs 100mm the desired increase in DOF is also the result of focal distance. CONCLUSION: I'm still testing the system. I'll be honest, the image quality is alright - but nothing compared to the 100mm f/2.8 L on the 5DIII. For detail shots of jewelry and such during weddings, these images will never be ordered as large prints. As an image in a wedding album this system should be just great. The advantage is being able to move faster and get the macro shots while still having my other cameras ready to capture the events and people sharing moments in the other room.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the wait Had to wait for Canon to release the lens, but it was well worth the wait. The last time I did Macro Photography was about 30 years ago, and I forget the pleasure I get from photographing the very small. My first shot was of a honey roasted almond. Strange but very kool. I especially like the adjustable ring light. it's a big help on very close shots. Everybody takes macros of bugs and flowers. I plan on trying to get the strange and unusual. The combination of the Macro lens and the M3 camera makes for a small compact and advanced combination. Love it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from IN LOVE! I highly recommend this lens! I purchased the M5 this summer as a travel camera. I didn't want to lug around my 1DX. I purchased 4 lenses for the M5 and this is my FAVORITE by far! I didn't realize it had 2 modes, macro and super macro. The super macro was awesome. I was literally sniffing pollen with the bees while I was shooting flowers. Easy to use and sharp focus. Love ALL my shots using this lens.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from L series equivalent for EOS M I am using it for about a month on my EOS M3 and EOS M. My other macro was Tokina m35. It focuses extremely close, very good clarity and as sharp as the 22mm pancake for ef-m. I use it as a versatile all purpose lens for it's somewhat wide focal length. The ring light makes it an amazingly unique creative lens. Only other lens that remotely matches this lens with the concept of ring light is theYasuhara Nanoha. However, that one has a 5:1 macro ratio similar to Canon MP-E 65mm. As far as a built quality goes, it's built for the price in terms of it's ruggedness. It's built light so that it does not become front heavy and great for pov on very light tripods or the minipods or snappods. I have used it on a snappod (magnus) and got great results. Despite the light design I am surprised as Canon did put in the effort with the glasses. It has one UD (Ultra low dispersion) element similar to the L series macro lens. None of the other Canon macro lenes have that except for the L or the luxury ones. Which surprised me. With that being said I would recommend this lens as an essential to augment your EOS EF-M lens lineup. Happy shooting!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for the money Never having a macro lens before, I really have no perspective for comparison. It is a fun lens to have though. Dpreview has a spot on review of this lens. It can also be used as a regular lens for portraits and scenery. Although you can hand hold the lens for macro in bright sunlight, a tripod and an f18 or so aperture would give greater sharpness and depth of field. Recommend shooting in aperture mode. I like this lens a lot and it really adds versatility to the M3 system. I recently used this on a trip to Maine and got some great flower shots. The magnification on the super macro setting is amazing! It includes a lens hood to mount filters on, but you have to take it off to use the lights. The lights seem adequate so far for the shots I've taken, and they're a nice feature to have. Well designed and light weight, a great addition to the m lens lineup.
