Metz AF-2 overview

  • 1Description

Enhanced with an adjustable LED video light and high-speed sync, this mecablitz 44 AF-2 Digital Flash from Metz is a great addition to any Sony camera kit. This model is compatible with the system's ADI / P-TTL metering for accurate, automatic control over light output, though it still offers full manual control for those who desire it. With a guide number of 144' at ISO 100 and 105mm and a zoom head with a range of 24-105mm, this flash is able to balance size with versatility. For wider optics, a pull-out diffuser panel can expand the coverage to 12mm. The head also boasts the ability to tilt upwards 90° and rotate right 120° and left 180°. Additionally, this model can be used as a remote TTL slave with compatible system flashes.

When working with a compatible camera, the 44 AF-2 can be set to first or second curtain sync in order to more appropriately utilize your flash in certain situations. It also runs on four AA batteries which can provide a recycle time of 0.1-4 seconds. And, as a bonus this unit features a USB port so that users can update the firmware for enhancements and compatibility later on.

    Metz AF-2 reviews

mecablitz 44 AF-2 Digital Flash for Sony Cameras is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 5.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Made in Germany quality and feel. Ready for Sony MI shoe I use it with the new Elinchrom Universal Skyport kit (a little bit modified, in order to make contact with the Sony MI) as an off camera on-camera flash :D because I have an Elinchrom 3 heads studio wireless radio system. I use it also on camera, if I need TTL, but this seldom happens. I think this Metz is the most easy to setup and operate, and the LED helps manual focusing in the studio if I do not use Live View Display = Setting Effects OFF on my A7II. I do not mention the price, as anyone could make this kind of comparison. I would loved to have included a nice padded pouch for it similar quality-wise to the flashgun.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very satisfied Works very will with my a68 body. I use it for interior architectural photography and it does a great job. Before this I had a Sony HVL-F35M which overheated after about 15-20 minutes of use (45-60 pics). This flash has never exhibited a bit of bad behavior. I love it, it's incredibly simple to use in any exposure mode. AND it doesn't lock when rotating the head. Personally I hate when flashes (mostly OEM it seems) lock at interim points when using the swivel function. It wastes time and serves no purpose. Only drawback is that there's no dedicated slip-on diffuser for this flash. I had to heat up an old one I had to make it fit this unit.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Value for the Price Having owned every flash available for the Sony, this is a solid entry. My minor annoyances are the power light and indicator light are not bright enough to see in most sunlight, the lock is a little wonky, and doesn't have quite as many controls as I am used to. I like where the flash sits relative to the lens, the power of the flash, and the solid overall build.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than my 64 AF-1 I had a Metz 64 AF-1 and one of the wires in the shoe got bent. It would cost over $300 to fix so I tossed it and ordered this less expensive replacement. I like it better. Even though it has a lower guide number it still serves my purpose. If I need more light all I do is bump up my ISO. What I like about it, it turns off and on faster. With the 64, you have to hold down the button much longer. When you're under time constraints it's a pain. It's also easier to change the power as well. I use it in manual mode only.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great for what I need. After replacing all my pro equipment I toned down to just hobby status and this flash fits the bill. It works great with my Sony camera, easy to use and helps take great pictures.
