Olympus 17mm overview

  • 1Description

Combining a duo of versatile lenses for Micro Four Thirds shooters, the Travel Lens Kit from Olympus includes both the M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-150mm f/4-5.6 II and M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f/1.8 lenses as well as matching lens hoods and two barrel-style lens cases to protect the lenses during storage and travel. The included lenses are ideally suited for travel photography due to the flexibility of the zoom and the bright wide-angle design of the prime.

  • M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-150mm f/4-5.6 II Lens

Designed as a one-lens solution, the M.Zuiko Digital ED 14-150mm f/4-5.6 II Lens from Olympus is an extremely versatile all-in-one zoom for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras. Providing a 28-300mm equivalent focal length range, this lens spans a wide-angle to telephoto reach to suit photographing in nearly any situation. Despite its reach, the lens still remains compact for easy portability, and it utilizes a sophisticated optical design, comprised of various aspherical, low dispersion, and high refractive index glass elements, to reduce aberrations and distortion for high sharpness, clarity, and color accuracy. A ZERO coating has also been applied to suppress flare and ghosting for improved contrast when working in strong lighting conditions. Additionally, this 14-150mm lens also sports a Movie & Still Compatible (MSC) AF system that is quick and quiet, and has a weather-resistant construction to suit working in inclement weather conditions.

Spanning a wide-angle to telephoto range, this all-in-one zoom is designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras and provides a 28-300mm equivalent focal length.
One Dual Super Aspherical element, one aspherical element, two E-HR (Extra-High Refractive Index) elements, and one high refractive index element are used to reduce spherical aberrations and distortion throughout the zoom range for increased sharpness and resolution. An EDA (Extra-Low Dispersion Aspherical) element and one extra-low dispersion element are also used to reduce chromatic aberrations and color fringing for improved clarity and color accuracy.
A ZERO (Zuiko Extra-low Reflection Optical) coating has been applied to individual elements to minimize lens flare and ghosting for improved contrast and color fidelity when working in strong lighting conditions.
Movie & Still Compatible (MSC) autofocus system benefits both photo and video applications due to its smooth, quiet, and fast performance.
Dust-, freeze-, and splash-proof design ensure the lens' performance in inclement and harsh conditions.

  • M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f/1.8 Lens (Black)

A flexible lens for general shooting, the black M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f/1.8 from Olympus is a 34mm equivalent wide-angle prime for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras. The wide field of view pairs with the bright f/1.8 maximum aperture to benefit working in difficult lighting conditions, and it also offers increased control over depth of field for working with selective focusing techniques. The optical design makes use of aspherical and high refractive index glass elements to control spherical aberrations and distortion throughout the aperture range for increased sharpness and clarity. Additionally, a Movie & Still Compatible (MSC) autofocus system is employed to deliver quick and quiet focusing performance and a manual focus clutch can be used for more intuitive adjustment and control over focus.

Wide-angle prime is designed for Micro Four Thirds mirrorless cameras and provides a 34mm equivalent focal length.
Fast f/1.8 maximum aperture helps to achieve shallow depth of field and selective focusing effects, and also benefits working in difficult lighting conditions.
One DSA (Dual Super Aspherical) element, two aspherical elements, and one high refractive index element contribute to a marked reduction in distortion and spherical aberrations for notable sharpness and accurate rendering throughout the aperture range.
Movie & Still Compatible (MSC) autofocus system benefits both photo and video applications due to its smooth, quiet, and fast performance.
Manual focus clutch lets you quickly pull the focusing ring into place for direct, intuitive focus control.
Rounded seven-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality.

  • LH-48B Lens Hood for M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f/1.8 Lens (Black)

The black LH-48B Lens Hood for M.Zuiko Digital 17mm f/1.8 Lens from Olympus is a metal lens hood designed specifically for the above mentioned 17mm f/1.8 lens. The primary purpose of a lens hood is to deflect unwanted light from entering the lens and producing flare. It can also provide a degree of protection for the lens from accidental impact and the elements. A dedicated lens hood is designed specifically for the focal length of its lens and provides enough extension to deflect light without intruding on the image frame.

Olympus 17mm reviews

Travel Lens Kit with 14-150mm f/4-5.6 and 17mm f/1.8 Lenses is rated 4.9 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Would buy this again. Bought this kit for when I walk the dog, run errands around town, and take short trips. The 14-150mm represents a wide range and delivers very nice images. The 17mm is very fast and has great corner detail. I typically use these two lenses with my EM5 Mark II and they form a very light kit. If I want to go super light I just take the 17mm. You really can't go wrong with these two lenses at this price-point.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Useful and Economical Combination!! This is an interesting lens package set at an attractive price-point, especially when it's put on sale. I thoroughly enjoyed shooting the 17mm with my EM-1 for NY Times Square street scenes; the night shots were quite remarkable due to its 1.8 aperture. At 4 oz. you can hold the camera and shoot with one hand. All the professional reviewers love the lens and for good reason. The 14-150 isn't and doesn't claim to be a premium lens. It is, however, at least as good as the 12-50, only slightly heavier, with much greater reach; that's what makes it a good travel lens (if you can pass on the sharpness of a prime or of the pro f2.8 12-40.) As other reviewers have observed, travel photos are more about memory, less about art. But when you want to up the quality, especially when the lights dim, grab that little 17mm prime and fire away!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An excellent replacement for a kit lens I ordered this kit with Olympus PEN E-PL8 body instead of getting a kit 14-42mm lens. After two weeks of shooting I think that this was a pretty good choice. - 17mm f1.8 lens is great, I will never replace it. The images are sharp, bright and colorful, low light performance is great, the lens is very small and light. - The hood for 17mm lens is perfect, made from aluminum and installed with thumb screw. - 14-150mm lens is a good all around starter lens. The images are not as good as with 17mm lens, but for such a lens they are very decent. So in a situation where swapping lenses is not practical, it works well. - The hood for 14-150mm lens is plastic and not the best quality, takes some effort to put on / take off. It will probably break pretty soon. - The lens cases are very good quality, but a little bulky. They work great for caring lenses in a backpack. Overall, I highly recommend this kit as an alternative to getting the kit lens.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice, for the price For the price, these are nice lenses. The wife and I just finished a two week trip across Ecuador. I bought this travel kit to take with me, but ended up only taking the 14-150mm with me, since the 17mm was a triplicated length with the 14-150 and the Oly 12-42mm f/2.8 kit lens. The 17 mm lens is very nice, and I like the f/1.8 aperture. Decent image quality. The 14-150mm variable aperture is a little frustrating with low light, but the focal length is great for travel. We hiked a lot, and it was nice being able to zoom in to find a bird, and then out to take a picture of the landscape--all without changing lenses. The downside is that the photos definitely don't have the image quality that I would have liked. But, that was to be expected with such a lens. It's small, cheap, and very lightweight. Great for travel. If you plan on traveling and you want to avoid taking expensive glass, or if you want general travel photos, these are nice. If you're a pixel peeper, I'd suggest saving your money and buying something that will provide better image quality. I find that after just this one trip, I'm longing for an upgrade already.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Lenses So I will start by saying I haven't used the 14-150 enough to properly review or give my opinion on, but the 17mm is absolutely amazing. The focal length is such a great overall lens and can be used is all different situations. The 1.8 aperture makes it great for shooting in low light settings (much of what I do). I can't wait to get out and shoot more with these lenses.
