    GNARBOX GNAR128V1 Reviews

128GB Portable Backup & Editing System is rated 3.5 out of 5 by 27.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great for me.... I saw some reviews stating issues with wi-fi, the unit becoming overly heated (hot), etc., but for me the thing has worked like a charm from day 1.? ?Connects to my iphone and ipad flawlessly.? I can plug my new XQD card reader up directly via USB 3.0 and it transfers the big RAW files perfectly.? As far as uploading to Lightroom CC - you simply go to your files folder on the iphone or ipad and choose the Gnarbox and wallah...you upload the file into LR CC with no problems.? Can't wait to take this thing on the next trip with the new D850 and GoPro and not have to worry about also lugging the laptop.? A bit pricey but overall very happy with the purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from save space I bought this for a trip to Botswana. It saved a lot of space since I always travel with my iPhone. Was a bit disappointed that a week after I got this one the 256Gb came out for the same price. It's okay I used an external thumb drive. Pro- Easy and fast Transfer Saves space over a laptop. Nice sealing Long Battery Cons. Heavy for its size but it stayed in the hotel the whole time. Gets pretty warm when you transfer images Smaller internal HD size (Fixed with the 256 GB Version) overall. If you travel and want to back up your files without using a laptop this is a must. Recommend to others: Yes,

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Voltage problem for external drives While on location, I connected the Gnarbox to power through its USB port, and proceed to backup files directly from an SD card to an external HDD. Regardless of the drive, this will fail. Theres a voltage design flaw that will make your transfer fail while the unit is connected to power. I confirmed this with Gnarboxs customer support. Its also listed on their troubleshooting guide. Theres no solution at hand. You can only do this while running on Gnarboxs internal battery which is not big enough to transfer files from multiple/large cards. I wanted to love this thing, but its not a good option for backups on the go.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth the long wait This product finally showed up on my door step one random day after I placed the order a 1 prior, since this was a kickstarter product. But my first experience was using this device to edit my 4K video content on the go. My main goal for this product was to remain laptop free and just work off my iPad Pro. I attempted this and was successful so far in the file transfer and import of files from drone,GoPro, iPhone and DSLR. Now I can edit my content and upload directly from iPad to YouTube without a my MacBook Pro. The best part is that every device fits in my camera backpack!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Cannot connect External Drive to Micro-B USB3 port I purchased this with the intent of backing up my CF card to an external drive without the use of a computer when traveling. I noticed that it had USB2, USB3, and Micro-B USB3 ports - and thought it would be ideal to connect a CF card reader to the USB3 port on the Gnarbox and export via the Micro-B USB3. Before I purchased this I contacted Gnarbox to see if an external drive could be connected (and used) using via the Micro-B USB3 port (in addition to the USB3 and USB2 ports). I was twice assured by Gnarbox that the Micro-B USB3 port not only could be used for charging but an external drive could be connected and used via this port. Once received - Gnarbox then told me that NO - you CANNOT connect an external drive to the Micro-B USB3 port. Other than that, it seems to be functioning as described in a good compact footprint.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works just like they said it would! Great tool that lets you leave the bulky laptop at home, will be a godsend for travel with baggage restrictions. I love how they've made it rugged to survive abuse. Two wants though... 1-Better battery life, its decent and lets you do basic back actions, but you do much long term edits or major file transfer to another hard drive and its gonna use the battery up, though if you are doing that you'll probably be somewhere you can plug in. 2-USB C port, that would have made it future proof and allowed for fast charging of the device. Otherwise really happy with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from If you think you need this YOU DO! Do you travel? Do you have lots of gear? Do you want to have all your data backed up and stored in the ultimate way?!?!? THIS IS FOR YOU! This product performed better than I could have ever imagined. It's the perfect child from a Server/Hard Drive/Ediing Software combination. No matter the trip it has always done great! Cold, Snow, Sand, Dirt and Kids! I'm an adventurous snowboarding instructor who lives in Utah and loves to travel. Whether it's a frozen backcountry spilt-boarding tour, a sandy beach with the family or a 5-day deep backpacking trip. GnarBox gives me the comfort to take all the photos and video I want with no worries about losing the data or needing to back up. I use a combination of the Sony a6300, GoPro Hero 5 and DJI Mavic Pro. With the Gnarbox I don't need to have as many SD cards on hand or my laptop even with me. On my longer trips with no power, I was able to daily download my SD cards and review the day's photos and videos. The battery lasted 6 DAYS!!!!! Then upon return, a quick hook up to my computer and the files were neatly transferred to my main HD. So if you think you need this YOU DO! Traveling Europe? Going outta town, leaving power behind or just want a great way to quickly edit and post! This is EXACTLY what you need! It's an epic change to travel photography! - The Photo is from Red Castle Lake, High Uintas Utah. It's 11 Miles in and we were there for 4 days! GnarBox made it possible to take all the videos and photos I wanted with no worries of losing data or not having SD space.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I'm using it to back up files in the field, but it sucks Except for the ruggedness, just about everything sucks about this thing. Wish there was an alternative. The user interface is horrible and there are so many steps need to get anything done. And connecting to a computer is an exercise in inconsistent sources of frustration. Things happen and I never know why. Then sometimes they don't happen. Fro example, I want to delete files while in the field, so I select them and press delete in the app, but it tells me "Unable to delete file". No explanation, no alternatives, nothing on support forums. I just have to tolerate lots of non-sense. And I haven't even tried to use it as a wifi device to edit videos. That's not a path I'm going to go down, as even the simple stuff is absurdly confusing and inconsistent. All I want to do is back up files from my SD cards in the field, then transfer them to my computer when I get back to the office. But it never just goes smooth. I paid for features I'll never use and even the feature I do use is wrought with annoyances. An app redesign or firmware update could fix this stuff, but whatever. Everything else I own makes my life easier. This tool is the only dreaded item in my workflow.

I use XQD 120GB memory cards. Will I have a problem loading an entire card to the 128GB Gnarbox? Or should I purchase the 256GB Gnarbox?
    Asked by: natalie
Hi Natalie, thanks for getting in touch! It depends how large your memory cards are and how much data you intend on shooting. The 256GB unit does give you peace of mind if you are worried about filling up the 128GB unit.
