Acer NT.LCDAA.005 overview

  • 1Description

The Acer 12" Aspire Switch Alpha 12 Multi-Touch 2-in-1 Laptop has a split personality by coming with a detachable keyboard that lets you utilize it as a notebook or tablet. Powering the hybrid system is a dual-core 2.3 GHz Intel Core i5-6200U processor that can handle multiple applications simultaneously and achieve speeds of up to 2.8 GHz when running demanding applications. For memory, it sports 8GB of DDR3 memory as well as a 256GB SSD, which holds the preinstalled Windows 10 Home operating system. Additionally, you can expand its storage capacity using an optional microSDXC memory card inserted into the card slot.

The Alpha 12 is outfitted with a 12" IPS panel, providing wide-viewing angles as well as accurate colors. Visuals are handled by an integrated Intel HD Graphics 520 engine, which delivers a 2160 x 1440 resolution to the screen as well as to an external monitor via its USB 3.1 Type-C port. The Switch Alpha 12 features an adjustable kickstand that lets you tilt the screen, so you can experience multimedia content at an optimal viewing angle. Moreover, the screen is armed with multi-touch capabilities, letting you utilize Windows 10's swipe, tap, and zoom abilities.

Acer has equipped the Switch Alpha 12 with one USB 3.0 port to access printers, external drives, and other USB devices. The USB 3.1 Type-C port can also be used for connecting devices. Engaging in face-to-face online conversations can be done with an integrated front-facing webcam and microphone along with two onboard speakers. A second webcam is located on the back of the Alpha 12 to capture images. Other integrated features include Bluetooth 4.0 and 802.11ac Wi-Fi with MIMO technology. In addition, Acer includes a detachable backlit keyboard that transforms the Switch Alpha 12 into a 2-in-1 system.

Cooling
The Switch Alpha 12 comes built with Acer LiquidLoop, which is a fan-less heat pipe cooling system that cools the processor.
USB 3.1 Type-C Port
You can extend the Alpha 12's capabilities with external devices via a USB 3.1 Type-C port. This port transfers data quickly and streams high-res videos to displays without a hitch. You can also recharge external devices, like smartphones, via this port.
Audio and Visuals
The 12" 2160 x 1440 display two front-facing speakers provide an immersive video-watching experience.

Windows 10

Start Menu
After its hiatus in Windows 8, the Start Menu has returned. Utilizing a combination of the traditional menu system and Windows 8's Live Tiles, the improved Start Menu gives you more information at a glance, showing notification information alongside your applications and other pinned items.
Cortana
Microsoft's digital personal assistant, Cortana can answer your questions with information gleaned from both your device and the internet at large. You can type or even talk with her, if your system has a microphone. Using her Laptop, Cortana keeps track of your needs and wants, and she learns over time to improve her information gathering skills.
Microsoft Edge
After nearly 20 years, Microsoft has finally replaced its Internet Explorer web browser. With Microsoft Edge, users can write directly on web pages and share notes with friends and colleagues. It also improves the online reading experience by adding a distraction-free mode and read-it-later functionality. Edge also has built-in Cortana integration; you can have her help you find a restaurant, make a reservation, and pull up directions without leaving your browser.
Windows Store
For Windows 10, Microsoft has unified the Windows Store. Now, apps for PCs, tablets, and phones will all be accessible from one place. And with support for Universal Apps, one version of an app can work across all your compatible devices automatically.
Windows Continuum
Windows 10 was designed for a variety of screen sizes and input styles, and with its Continuum feature, it automatically adapts to fit your needs. A Windows 10 tablet on its own requires a touch-centric approach, but attaching a mouse and keyboard will shift everything to a more traditional interface. You can even attach an external monitor to your Windows 10 phone for a near-desktop experience. But it's not just the operating system; Windows Universal Apps take advantage of Continuum as well.
Xbox on Windows 10
Gaming is a big focus of Windows 10. Xbox integration allows for PC players to match up against Xbox One players on supported games, and if you have an Xbox One, you can even stream compatible titles to your PC. Native support for recording with the new Game DVR feature makes it easy to capture and share your gameplay. The new DirectX12 takes better advantage of multi-core processors, giving games a performance boost, even on older hardware. Windows 10 also features native support for virtual reality headsets, such as the Oculus Rift.

    Acer NT.LCDAA.005 reviews

    12" Aspire Switch Alpha 12 Multi-Touch 2-in-1 Notebook is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 27.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Device for the price. Having this unit now for about 2 weeks I must say I am happy with my purchase. I was looking at the Pro 4 for quite sometime and didn't wish to pay nearly 1600 dollars for it for the complete package. This device gives you the pen and a great backlit keyboard. Build quality is really good evening for being mostly plastic. Battery life in my I5 8GB 256 model is 5-6 in half hours of moderate use. I'd say the battery is the weakest part of this device. The front facing speakers are ok and do a decent job but not as good as the Pro 4 and the Pen is also ok but again better on a Pro 4. The liquid cooling works well but if you do game on this device it will get uncomfortably hot so I recommend keeping the keyboard on and the kickstand engaged on a surface and not handheld for gaming. To clarify by gaming I don't mean basic app stor e game, I mean games like Heroes of the Storm and Smite. The screen is also fantastic and very color accurate and bright. While it's not as high resolution as the Pro 4 it does get brighter. I recommend this to anyone looking at a Pro 4 or any similar device. Good quality at a great price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Affordable Surface Pro 4 Competetor I wanted to replace my old Samsung ATIV 500t with something that had a better screen and a faster processor, but wanted it to be affordable. The Switch Alpha 12 fits all three of those requirements and at $600 less than a comparably equipped Surface Pro 4. I use the Acer almost exclusively in the Tablet mode: accessing the internet, reading magazines and newspapers online and off and video streaming. I needed the computing power to run Quicken but not much else. I am impressed with the build quality. I cannot tell if the back is aluminum or plastic, but it feels very solid. My model (NT.LCDAA.005 ) comes with a pen and a backlit keyboard. The keyboard is very nice and folds all the way backwards when using the Acer as a tablet. The screen is a step up from the old Samsung 720p resolution and I can tell the difference. Very sharp. The i5 processor is a huge leap in power when compared to the old Samsung Z2760. I love the noiseless, liquid cool system. Under heavy load, the back gets warm, but not uncomfortably so . Under normal internet surfing, movie watching or reading articles in tablet mode, you don't even notice any excessive heat. Now what everyone is interested in, battery life. First, I run the screen at only 15% brightness and it is perfectly fine. This screen is bright. Second, when I type, I turn the keyboard backlight off. When you fold back the keyboard, the light automatically turns off. Now some numbers: A 2:10 movie, with sound coming through the speakers, used 32% for the battery. Overnight, in sleep mode (I don't use Hibernate in order to get newspaper and email automatically downloaded), used 4%. One hour of internet video used 16%. Extrapolating those numbers will give you an expected continuous battery life of 6 hours. Not great but good enough for the $600 savings over the Pro 4. You can spend the extra money for the surface, but I don't think it is worth it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice backlit keyboard, easy to use tablet/laptop Haven't had it that long, but so far I like it. The keyboard is good for a small laptop, nicely backlit. I am using a microsoft blue tooth mouse rather than the touchpad, and the mouse works fine. I would love to have another USB port, but other than that the device seems to have everything I need. Wish I didn't have to remove all the shovelware, but that's life these days. I'd give it 5 stars, but it comes with Win 10 Home and Acer won't put on Win 10 Pro like Dell and others will for $50 instead of the retail $100 that Microsoft charges.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Need for speed After living with a 1.3 Ghz machine for years, I wanted to move up to something better. Through a lot of research I found this Acer that met my technical needs as well as my budget. I wanted something more light weight, portable and having a capacity that fulfilled my home usage. I also found that the cooling system in this machine exceeds my expectations. Being old school and accustomed to noisy laptops that overheat my legs while on my lap, I am very surprised with no noise or heat coming from this system. I recognize there are many systems on the market today that exceed what I bought but this satisfies all my needs

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty darn good 2-in1 I bought this mainly for travel, but I've been using it at home to. Works pretty well -- keyboard is easy to type on and light enough for travel, but enough umph that I can put Adobe Premier and Photoshop Elements on for photo/video editing. Some reviews said the screen was not bright, but I haven't had any issues with it. Only one small bit of feedback to B&H (whom I really trust for good products and service: at one point they listed this model as being 'discontinued' when in fact it was only out of stock for a few days! Because of that I ended up buying it somewhere else for more -- but otherwise I'm pleased.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Decent notebook... Not quite the surface. You get what you p My intended use for this notebook was mainly for powerpoint presentations, reviewing articles and web pages, and for basic sketches using the pen. Pros: Fast powerful device, relatively better value than competitors Cons: Pen not quite as good as the surface. Couldn't get the eraser to work. Mousepad very sticky and sometimes lags

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Love It, Great Investment Super value for the money. Great spec, the thing boots fast, works fast and has plenty of power. Pen is great for annotating and doodling (maybe not an illustrator's tool, but good for my use). Screen looks great and the whole device is a pleasing work of engineering. I bought this tablet for an international trip I have coming up. Lighter than a laptop, but with all the power. I can tell this workhorse will do all I need away from home including my photo and video edits. Just add a few accessories and no problems making this your daily device.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bricked itself after 7 months Worked ok --- although the track pad ways always wobbly and imprecise, and the one day it simply refused to wake up from hibernation. No power light when the power cord was plugged in, no response to holding down the power button.
