Panasonic 12mm f/1.4 overview

  • 1Description

A fast and optically refined wide-angle prime, the Leica DG Summilux 12mm f/1.4 ASPH. Lens from Panasonic is a 24mm equivalent lens designed for Micro Four Thirds digital cameras. Characterized by its truly bright f/1.4 maximum aperture, this lens is ideal for working in low-light conditions and also affords a wealth of control over focus placement for using shallow depth of field techniques. The optical design employs a pair of aspherical elements, two ultra extra-low dispersion elements, and one extra-low dispersion element in order to control both spherical and chromatic aberrations for a high degree of sharpness and clarity from edge to edge. Benefitting the optical assets, this lens also incorporates a smooth and quiet autofocus motor that is well-suited to both stills and video recording, and a manual AF/MF switch lends direct focus mode adjustment for more intuitive handling. Additionally, the all-metal construction of the lens is also weather-resistant in order to permit working in trying environmental conditions. Pairing Leica's design legacy with Panasonic's technological innovation, this versatile wide-angle prime is distinguished by both its optical merits as well as intuitive handling and contemporary functionality.

Designed for mirrorless Micro Four Thirds digital cameras, this wide-angle 12mm f/1.4 lens provides a 24mm equivalent focal length.
The bright f/1.4 maximum aperture is well-suited to working in difficult and low lighting conditions, and also affords greater control over depth of field for selective focus techniques.
Two aspherical elements are featured in the lens' design, which help to maintain a compact form factor as well as help to reduce spherical aberrations and distortions.
Two ultra extra-low dispersion (UED) elements and one extra-low dispersion (ED) element work to significantly minimize color fringing and chromatic aberrations for increased clarity and color fidelity.
The smooth and near-silent autofocus performance complements movie recording applications while the quick operation is beneficial to still photographers.
A manual aperture ring gives tactile control over exposure settings and a dedicated AF/MF switch offers a simple, intuitive means for switching between focusing modes.
The metal construction of the lens is durable as well as splash- and dust-resistant when paired with Lumix Micro Four Thirds cameras for working in harsh environments.
A rounded nine-blade diaphragm contributes to a pleasing bokeh quality when making shallow depth of field imagery.

    Panasonic 12mm f/1.4 reviews

Leica DG Summilux 12mm f/1.4 ASPH. Lens is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 18.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from This lens has changed my perception of the mft platform I always shot photos separately with a Canon because the mft cameras have always not cut it when it came to low light performance, shallow DOF, and color. But somehow, this lens addresses all of that in a big way. Video and photos with beautiful colors, bokeh, no noise, shallow DOF in very low light conditions. I'm still taking it in. I actually like using my mft camera for photos now. I can shoot video in situations where it was inconceivable before. The beautiful shallow DOF for closeup shots of people and objects just encourage you to shoot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Glass for stills or video I bought this one elsewhere, because of a promotion (sorry, B&H), and I could not be happier with it. Edge to edge sharpness is near perfect. It's a very substantial piece of kit, as well. The amount of light it lets in seems impossible. It's also the fastest focusing lens I've encountered. It's a perfect fit for aerial video (my main purpose), but will fit into other niches well, IMO. Yes, it's expensive. It costs more than the body I'm using it with. But if you're going to do 4K video, you need something with this amount of sharpness, if you want to impress yourself, and others. If you can afford it, but it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Beautiful Optics for Stills but BEWARE for video users! I got this lens and literally used it for 1 hour and returned it. The optics are fantastic, sharp all through the aperture ranges. Corners are excellent even wide open. The build quality is awesome, very high quality lens for still photography. However,....the aperture ring clicks in partial stop increments. The ring cannot be de-clicked. This is fine unless you want to run it with an auto IRIS setting. Selecting auto aperture mode for video does NOT allow for a smooth ramping aperture! Your videos will click open and closed all through the aperture range. This is terrible for run and gun or gimbal use! This lens is too expensive to have a harsh, visual clicking aperture and brightens changes landing on every 1/3 stop as it opens or closes. If you are not shooting video, than this lens is fantastic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Lens This lens is a pleasure to use, incredibly sharp, great contrast, no distortion that I can perceive. It feels solidly built, operates smoothly and quietly and is beautifully finished as one would expect from a Leica labeled lens. I am addicted to the Lumix/Leica line and this is one of the best in that line, along with the 42.5mm.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Sharpness and Stars Come at a Price I have recently been able to use this lens while filming in the midwest and it did not let me down. The stills were as sharp as I have seen with my GH4, even out to the edges while shooting wide open, and the video was clean as could be (it cleaned up the VFR 96fps a lot). The aperture could be change manually or with the camera dials by simply changing the iris ring to the "A" setting or by rotating the ring to the desired aperture. As mentioned before, if you adjust the aperture ring manually you will hear an audible click so keep that in mind for video use but in my case I typically would have the iris set for a particular shot and being that most of what I used the lens for was slo motion and b-roll I didn't have to worry about the audio too much. I would prefer to have seen a focus ring with stops (minimum distance to infinity). This lens takes right at a full turn to rack focus from the minimum distance to infinity. Great macro capabilities though (about 2.5 inches minimum focus distance). Where I think this lens shines is at night while capturing night time lapses (see pic). With this lens the M4/3 sensor can now compete a little with the bigger brother sensors. Although I do like a little wider lens than a 24mm equivalent it still performed very well. All in all this is a great lens just wish it was priced like the 25mm f1.4. That is the only reason for the 4 STAR rating.
