    Zoom H1 reviews

H1 Ultra-Portable Digital Audio Recorder (Blue) is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 600.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Interview recorder I used to use wireless lavs, but got sick of having to scan for frequencies every time. This little guy just goes in your subjects pocket if they're standing or on a side table or floor if they're seated for a talking head. No interference, long battery life, very reliable. I use it with the Rode Smartlav and TRRS adapter. The only negative, and it's a big one is that the controls are very limited due to the small size. Some of the buttons are multi-purposed and I can never remember how to format or set the date since it's not a frequent thing I need to do. Also, it's all plastic which means it's lightweight, but it also means you should not drop it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Awesome Quality, lots of Handling Noise This little recorder is awesome. the only thing bad about it is how sensitive it is to handling noise. I ordered a shock mount for it; hopefully that'll do the trick. But if you're keeping it put it is excellent. I also use it as a poor man's wireless mic. I wired a lapel mic to it and put it on a lecturer while shooting video of the lecture and sync it later. The only other bad thing is I get a card read error when I try to format a blank card. I don't know if that's normal or not. I tried it on another H1 and it did the same thing a few times when I tested it against mine. I also wish it had a limiter instead of auto level.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Amateur User I only used this once so far, outside. It did a really good job. As with other comments, it picks up a large amount of ambient noise...which it should since it's not a shotgun mic. I bought the accessory kit and used the foam ball. It worked great at keeping down the wind noise as there was a breeze during the recording. Only picked up the blast of the worst of the breeze. The sound was good. I am an amateur, and have lots to learn about getting the setting dialed in. I am planing on using a plug in mic, weather that be a lapel or a shotgun mic like he Rode Micro. I recommend this item for beginners. Easy to use right out of the box.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Judge me by my size do you?-yoda This little guy packs a punch! Just as good as any shotgun mic out there in my opinion. Emmagination from @ has THREE of these, tells you how good they are, eh? This little guy records very clear, crisp, audio and has a variety of formats and bitrates. Records professional quality audio, and I use it to film my movies with all the time now. Essential piece of gear for any filmmaker. I highly recommend it, but you MUST buy the Windtech windscreen or you pick up lots of wind noise. Very good investment for both!-mike g ;)vimeo.com/michaelgoinsWindtech windscreen(B&H) http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/714075-REG/WindTech_MM_52_MM_52_Mic_Muff_for_Zoom.html/WIMM52

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolute Best Bang for the Buck! We picked this little wonder up for some field recording purposes as it was much tougher to get into certain venues with our full audio equipment. After spending a day at an ADRL drag racing event and interviewing I was more than pleased with the quality and plan on picking up a few more just to have on hand for our upcoming events we'll be covering. If you're on the fence with your purchase fear not as this is a solid little wonder with great quality, I'd pick up the accessory pack but at the very least snag a Deadcat or a Windscreen if you don't want the one in the accessory kit (this is fairly applicable to all mics you plan to use outdoors).

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Basic features, but does the job We typically use these recorders as a backup, with a lav mic hidden in clothing. The built-in mics do a good job, and for the price, the sound quality is actually quite good. Personally, I don't like the micro SD cards - they're too small and I've had bad luck with static damage. I think the recorder chassis is large enough to take a full-sized SD card. One very frustrating thing about the recorder is that the display doesn't tell you how much record time is left on the card, when it's recording. You have to stop the recording to get that information. Other than that, the recorder works well and does it's job.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great little rig I use the H1 instead of as a sort of cheap-o wireless setup. It's small and compact and can easily slip in someones pocket, and just hook them up with a wired LAV directly into it and let your subject walk and talk to their hearts desire. The on board mics are decent enough too, and the recording to .wav makes for some great quality sound - not the best in the world, but for under $$ you can't beat it! I do wish it was SD and not MicroSD, but it's not a big thing. Buttons are sturdy, and the battery life will easily last you a day. Single AA battery takes no time to change as well. If you don't need XLR inputs, then you definitely won't regret this purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unreasonably good sound quality The good: - Exceptional sound quality for the price and size - Easy to use ? all the most important functions (including switching between MP3 and WAV) are done through hardware switches, so very little futzing with software menus. - Card reader mode so you don't need to have an SD card reader to retrieve files. - Mic mode ? super cool. Plugs into a computer to be used as a very nice external mic. Not so good: - Pretty flimsy construction (I bought a case almost immediately after holding it) - NEEDS a windscreen outdoors, but sounds great with one. Standard $3 foam windscreen fits and works fine. - Doesn't come with a micro-USB cable (but you probably have a bunch of those already)
