Fujifilm EF-X500 overview

  • 1Description

Take advantage of high-speed sync, wireless control and triggering, and other advanced flash capabilities with the Fujifilm EF-X500 Flash for X-series cameras. Featuring a lower profile, this weather-resistant flash is compatible with Fuji's TTL system, and a great option for the company's compact mirrorless cameras. It offers a powerful guide number of 164' at ISO 100 and 105mm settings as well as a zoom range of 24-105mm, equivalent to 16-70mm in APS-C lenses. A pull-out diffuser is available for expanding coverage to wider 20mm, or 10mm APS-C lenses. In keeping with hybrid stills/video camera designs, and offering an alternative fill light option to the pull-out bounce card built into the flash, is an LED light.

For bounce lighting, the EF-X500 can tilt from -10 to 90° and offers rotation left 135° and right 180°. A major addition to this flash is full wireless master and slave TTL functionality. It uses optical pulse communication to trigger and control remote EF-X500 flashes set up in one of four channels and within three groups. Additionally, the flash has a multi flash stroboscopic mode and runs on four AA batteries.

    Fujifilm EF-X500 reviews

EF-X500 Flash is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 18.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Competent but pricey If this was priced under $300 it would be a 4.5-Star flash. But at nearly $450 (US) it lacks capabilities that should have been included. Performance-wise, it's powerful enough, especially if you only need a flash for flash work. And that power is put into a nicely small-ish sized unit. Another thing is it doesn't easily overheat. But for night work, or, studio work, it's has design flaws -focus lamp too garish, for example- and lack features, such as a restrictive remote implementation. Best to read professional reviews and figure-out what your needs are before spending. Bottom Line: Well built, small and powerful, but too expensive to justify for occasional use.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great flash for the money. Apparently 2 people gave this a three star rating because it is an optically controlled flash and not radio transmitted. Both Canon and Nikon now offer radio controlled flashes, that cost about $600. This flash is about $450...THE SAME PRICE AS an SB910 which is very similar in specs and also an OPTICALLY controlled unit. I have used both the Canon and Nikon units and found them to be fairly reliable. It would be nice if Fuji would come out with a radio controlled unit...BUT FOR THE PRICE, this unit is exactly what I would have expected it to be. Well Built, Full Function, and VERY RELIABLE!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Far better than I imagined! After only a short time with my new EF-X500 flash I can honestly say this is the best flash I have ever owned for any system. Build quality is far better than the big C or N companies flashes. Doesn't feel like a fragile toy like so many others. The menu system is very straight forward with more features than you will ever need. I have run it thru the paces with my X-T1 (with latest firmware to give it maximum compatibility with the flash) and it works perfectly. Some have complained about the lack of a radio trigger. Personally it is not an issue for me. If it is an issue for you there are ad on radio controllers that work better than the built in radio controllers of flashes that do have them. Also, when you compare the price of this flash to the flashes of the other companies you will find the price is right in line for a top end flash without a radio controller. If you are on the fence about this flash don't be. It is a quality flash inside and out!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful flash I had the EFX42, this is a massive upgrade, easy to use, well made and very powerful. Okay, it doesn't have RF wireless, big deal, I use a third party system which I used on the EFX42's, and will continue to use. The best feature as far as I'm concerned is the slick, slide on diffuser, beautiful design and the pouch for the whole flash system (included), is a work of art. Another big plus is the easy to access +5 stop/-5stop compensation, wonderful!!!! If I had to design the perfect flash, this would be it :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Finally, a Pro Strobe I had high hopes for this long-awaited flash. The achilles heel of the Fuji system has, for a long while, been a dedicated proprietary strobe. This unit more than fills the bill. Not too big, it's still a hefty unit, and the excellent build quality is instantly evident. It has all the features you'd want in its easy-to-navigate and intuitive menu. Multiple bounce angles and zoom settings are available. This is one of the few flashes that has what I believe should be a standard feature: a front fill light. This small flash helps to fill shadows typical of bounce flashes and it does double-duty as a video light! A bulb diffuser is included (but attaches in an inexplicable fashion). A well-made, padded case and a stand round out the free accessories. Excellent recycle rate with rechargeable AAs. The flash works well with Fuji's TTL metering and I just couldn't be happier. If you're on the fence, give it a try. I'll bet you'll love it as much as I do. One of the greatest compliments I ever received was from a photographer friend: Your flash photos look like available light. He was right and I achieved that with Canon bodies/flashes. Now I can finally do the same thing with my Fuji X-Pro2. I'm supremely happy with this product.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Steer clear of this flash for now until the bugs are fixed I love fuji cameras, been a user of their products for several years now. Unfortunately when it comes to flashes they just can not seem to get it. Overall this flash is decent, it lacks RF wireless triggering which for the money was a disappointment. I was willing to look past that, however and give it a shot as the EF-42 is complete garbage and the plastic hot shoe broke after a year. Well after having it less than 30 days the flash has already died and will not power on. No wonder they were delayed for so long, over heating issues, quality control, I don't know who Fuji had build these for them but if I was FUJI I would be looking at whatever company it was and getting the Fuji development team involved going forward as these are a major disappointment. I ordered a replacement thinking it was just maybe a lemon I got but actually cancelled my order of the replacement flash after speaking with Fuji today they said there is a known issue with the flash and they are working to fix it before they release additional units. They said that the power board is likely bad on some of the copies that are currently floating around for sale. If you are a working photographer I would avoid this flash for now. I have ordered another flash brand for the time being.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from EF-X500 a great flash for Fuji We are very pleased with the new EF-X500 flash. It fills a void in the Fuji accessories very well. It is super easy to use from the back LCD screen when you reassign one of the four back toggle buttons to Flash. One click and you are in the flash menu and very easy to adjust ETTL or manual power output. No need to touch the flash except to turn it on. It really invites you to fine tune the flash output but the ETTL really works very well in auto mode. Easiest flash I have used. I am very impressed with its power output and smaller size relative to other 4 AA battery flashes, an extra bonus. Also has an easy off camera flash trigger mode but of course can't remotely control output unless using another X500. The very small flip up Fuji flash will nicely trigger the X500 at a distance while you can control the small on camera flash output for some very easy two flash shooting. Finally if you shoot Canon this flash is 100% compatible with Canon cables. Off camera ETTL works using a Canon cable which makes getting cables easier, even better if you already have one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works very time The controls are easy to use, but more importantly the flash fires at the correct intensity every time. I have been using a Fujifilm EF 42 and about every 10 shots I will get a photo that's completely blown out. I jiggle the flash on the hot shoe and I'm good for about another 10 shots. I think the problem is that the EF 42 has a plastic hot shoe mount. The EF- X500 has a metal hot shoe mount and so far every shot has been correctly exposed.
