Panasonic AG-AC30 Overview

  • 1Description

Panasonic's AG-AC30 Full HD Camcorder with Touch Panel LCD Screen and Built-In LED Light is at home shooting corporate, event, and indie projects. It features a 1/3.1" BSI MOS sensor for improved low-light performance and incorporates a 20x zoom lens with 5-axis hybrid image stabilization. The lens also features electronically linked geared iris rings for manual control of focus, zoom, and iris. Built-into the top handle is an LED light for illuminating your subject in dim light.

Two viewfinders provide you a choice when operating the camera with either a traditional tilt up color EVF, or a pullout LCD high resolution touchscreen. The LCD touchscreen is positioned above the lens for a more natural viewing experience when shooting handheld. Slow motion recording functionality is included, allowing you to record in Full HD up to 120 fps. The camera records in MP4, MOV, or AVCHD codecs, and features dual SDXC media card slots. allowing you to use relay recording or simultaneous recording.

A built-in LED light illuminates your subjects with a bright (300 lux at 1 meter) beam of daylight balanced light. If the beam is too harsh, an included diffusion filter covers and softens the light. If you need tungsten balanced light, a color conversion filter is included as well.
The integrated 20x optical zoom lens provides sharp images and an equivalent 35mm focal length range of 29.5 to 612mm (16:9). The lens also features a 49mm filter thread.
The camera employs 5-axis hybrid O.I.S. compensating for side-to-side, up-down, forward-back handheld shake.
The AG-AC30 features electronically linked zoom, focus, and iris rings on the lens. The rings are textured for better tactile feel.
The camera shoots and records HD at 23.98p, 29.97p, 59.94i, and 59.94p in MP4/MOV at 50Mb/s. AVCHD recording at 59.94p averages 25Mb/s for FHD, and as well at 59.94i and 23.98p at lower data rates. You can also shoot in 1280 x 720 or 720 x 480i, although that signal is cropped and squeezed.
A selection for super slow motion allows you to shoot FHD (1920 x 1080) at 120 fps.
The camera records in either MP4, MOV, AVCHD, or AVCHD Progressive.
The sensor features a design that moves the circuitry normally found in front of the photosites to the back of the sensor's substrate. this allows more photons to strike the photosites, increasing the sensitivity of the sensor.
An illuminated ring lets your subject know when you are recording by changing from blue to red. Although this is pleasant in appearance, this feature can be disabled in the camera's menu.
You can activate a level indicator overlay, which can be useful to check the camera is level when shooting handheld or with a stabilizer.
The camera incorporates a built-in microphone, and two 3-pin XLR audio inputs for line or mic level input.

    Panasonic AG-AC30 Reviews

AG-AC30 Full HD Camcorder with Touch Panel LCD Screen & Built-In LED Light is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 24.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Minor nitpicks This is a terrific camera. Great image quality. Panasonic colors. Very good ergonomics. Lightweight. Great, clear viewfinder. Ok menu system. idiot-proof automatic settings. Huge zoom range. .mov edit easily on a Mac. Outstanding anti-shake. Great match with my GH2. This is pretty much the biggest bang you can get for your buck. Nitpicks (nothing major): built-in ND filter would have been nice. The screen is a tiny bit too small, but very clear. Would have preferred the screen located on the side like the Canon XF100 (which this camera replaces). The cheesiest lens cap I've ever seen in my life (it works, though).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from perfect for me im a videographer who specializes in live music performance recordings. i record a LOT of bands. i had a few things i was looking for in a pro 1080 video recorder. excellent low light capability, xlr inputs with proper volume control, built in light, 2 chip recording, excellent picture quality, touch screen, etc. and this video camera nails all of the most important things i needed. it was also the only camera in this price range that had all those features. i highly recommend this unit if you shoot in low light situations and need good sound as well. it gets all the bases covered.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Continually Great Lovely camera. Has a couple great upgrades from the previous version. No longer forced to record in AVCHD (thank god). You have 3 different options, though of course, they won't be as finely compressed and manageable as AVCHD, so have larger memory cards ready. The LED on front also is certainly just an easy win-over. Questionable change to outer and menu interface. Finding your way around the functions on the outside camera is certainly not as intuitive and takes a lot of guessing and searching and manual reading (mainly for menu options). Besides that, a very solid choice within this price range.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I Own Two Let’s keep it simple, at the AG-AC30’s price point and component offerings, it does what it’s built to do… capture clean imagery for OTC viewing and solid post-production editing. ?The AG-AC30 is extremely user friendly – ?I own two and use them as “A” and “B” cameras for weddings, theater, corporate and social events, and instructional design videography. ?The camera is lightweight and packs enough presence so your audience and production peers know you’re serious when you show up at an event for work.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great things come in small packages I am using 2 AG-AC30's along with my AG-UX90 for IMAG work in a 350 seat live performance theater. We just did the Michael McDonald show and was very impressed how the smaller sensor in the AC30 was able to come close to the UX90's 1" sensor. Excellent low light performance, great range in the lens (20x optical) and the zooms are as smooth as butter. Focus Peaking, Zebra, manual color balance and color level tweaks make it possible to get a stellar live image on the house projection screens (via the Black Magic video switcher)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Feature Rich Prosumer Camcorder, Perfect For The Price Great: I bought this camera primarily for wedding videos. As a quick 'run and gun' camera it works great. The image stabilizer is a life saver. Images are crisp and bright. For the price this camera is exactly what I was looking for, a lightweight, feature rich prosumer camera (albeit at the lower end of the spectrum) Relay mode is fantastic. I had two separate cards with very different specs and sizes in the camera and it seamlessly moved from one card to another when the first was full. Not So Great: There are some 'silly' features on this camera any pro would have no need for like 'dip to color's, black and white filter, screenshot mode, but luckily the camera is very customizable so all those buttons can be changed to other more important functions. I set the Record Check button (which is right above the record button) to Auto Focus, much more useful. This thing ships with literally everything on auto, and I highly suggest taking an afternoon to really get to know the menus and buttons, from my experience the auto white balance is garbage, watch in horror as your cool scene becomes a sauna as someone with a red shirt steps in front of the lens. Panasonic expects you to buy all their accessories, and they charge out the nose for them, the battery pack is 200 bucks, and the base to charge batteries on is also 200. If you don't buy that you'll be plugging the camera in to the wall with the battery attached to charge which, when you're running around at a wedding is impossible. I will say though that the stock battery does last a very long time as long as you keep the light off most of the time. I shot for a solid 5-6 hours using a multitude of features, turning it on and off and still had two bars of power left at the end of the day. I'm going to have to drop $200 on that battery eventually, and that's frustrating.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Impressive little camera I purchased two of these cameras for traveling to events where I need to shoot multi-cam. They are the perfect size and weight. The camera was easy to figure out and while I haven't used it extensively I do like it. Two things I don't like: the camera lens cover is loose. I'll find a way to attach it so I don't lose it. And the view finder is really tiny. But that's because it's a small camera. The quality is gorgeous. I'm really impressed with that and I love having the onboard light.
